Three Guys

(Jonathan Newton/The Washington Post)

We went to the Great Wall of China and it was closed. We laughed heartily when we were stopped at a checkpoint and told it was closed because some Olympic bikers we practicing on the road course.

We pressed on and found a different section. Above the clouds on the Great Wall: Thomas Boswell, me and Barry Svrluga. This is where King Chuang broke through the wall and beat the troops from Puyi of the Ming dynasty.

It was a big change from the day before, when we roasted like Peking duck in the Forbidden City to the cool mist that enveloped the hills.
