Fencing: Foil Team Scores Upset

The American women's foil team of Erinn Smart, Hanna Thompson and Emily Cross continued its upset streak, knocking off the No. 3-seed Hungary in the semifinals, 35-33, and will move to tonight's gold-medal match at 7:30 p.m. against top-ranked and world- No. 1 Russia.

The U.S. squad was seeded 7th in the eight-team field. Earlier in the day the U.S. upset No. 2-seed Poland, 31-30.

By competing in the gold medal match, the United States is assured of its first Olympic medal in women's foil, and the first U.S. medal in foil overall since the 1960 Rome Olympic Games, when Albert Alexrod won the individual bronze medal.
