(Update) Fencing: Silver for Sabre

The U.S. men's sabre team of Keeith Smart, Jason Rogers and Tim Morehouse won the silver medal in competition held Sunday evening at the Fencing Hall. In the gold medal match, the Americans fell to France, 45-37, to conclude the fencing competition.

The silver medal is only the second won by the United States in team sabre competition. The other was a bronze won at the 1948 London Olympic Games.

The U.S. team defeated No. 3 seed Russia in the final touch, 45-44, in the semifinals. Earlier in the day, the Americans beat No. 2 seed Hungary, 45-44.

Italy won the bronze.
