Men's Basketball: U.S.-Spain Update

At the end of the first quarter, Spain has come out much stronger than in the previous meeting between the two countries in pool play -- a 37-point laugher in favor of the United States -- but still trails the U.S., 38-31.

Tight officiating has forced both LeBron James and Kobe Bryant, two of Team USA's best offensive weapons, to the bench as each has already picked up two fouls.

In international competition, a player only gets five personal fouls before being disqualified.

Spain = european whites

USA = black african monkeys

Fuerza España, Pau Gasol, eres el mejor!!!

Dear De Pedro Spain,

Your comments about the USA team being monkeys really is a refection about you and your racist/xenophobic Spanish countrymen. Fortunately the USA, despite, having its own issues with racism has moved far beyond your country.

Espero que tu y tus compatriotas que les vayan bien en sus rincones del tercero mundo de europa.

i agree with aaron. but i really wonder why my comment about not liking lebron, wade's great game and some dodgy pro-us reffing was censored but the racist drivel was not.

Posted by: FreeDC | August 24, 2008 3:36 AM

De Pedro = stupid
Spanish = Not De Pedro (fortunately)

Posted by: Spanish man | August 24, 2008 3:37 AM

De Pedro Spain,

All I can say with astonishment is wow. What a crass, xenophobic, immature statement you've made. Please grow up before you post things or say things lest others consider you to have a puerile brain.

There are fools everywhere...spanish people admire the great american players regardless the colour of the skin..and saying that Spain is the third world only demonstratres your great inculture and mind narrowness...
Go on Spain!

I am for Team USA all the way, but Spain has played some great Ball. It is such a shame some people have to reduce these Great Athletes to skin color and racist remarks. De Pedro does not speak for the people of spain. He speaks for the uneducated of the world! GO USA! GO USA! Bring Home The Gold Guys!!! We Love You All!

Posted by: .erican Girl | August 24, 2008 4:05 AM

Maybe De Pedro just needs some friends. The above comment is mine too. My name just got cut off. Go USA!!!

Posted by: American Girl | August 24, 2008 4:11 AM

man this is a tight good game. thankfully we have kobe. otherwise we'd be losing. we still dont have the mental edge. spain has gotten almost all the loose balls.

good job spain. good job bryant and wade. solid play by paul and williams, the rest of the team not so much.

It was a shame to see that crass comment, but it's just an unfortunate action by one person. That's all it is, so we should just move on. The game is over, and the result is in; the United States won by 11. However, I felt much more impressed by Spain's crisp teamwork. The U.S. did enough to win, but it was always close, and Spain led at some points early on. Some dodgy moments from some American players, with regards to their gameplay and their tempers, unfortunately. Otherwise, a great, entertaining game; I hope people on both sides of the Atlantic (and also everyone all over the world) could enjoy it.

I know Spain looks forward to playing the U.S. again in London four years from now, and I hope it is the same for the U.S. It's great that Spain played such a tight game, because I hope the players on Team USA will remember that they can't get cocky. On paper, they might be 8-0, but the game was not a sure win until near the end...

De Pedro from outer space wins(in his own mind), with the question if the US team is the dream team, I think they are the REAL DREAM TEAM, better than the 92 US team, if only because they never in even a sec take for granted their competition. They don't have that thinking that we can kick the butt of the other teams. They really played really good well beyond good... they are great not because they are from the NBA. They may not be called a Dream Team Of USA... if they win this or not... They are the DREAM TEAM of the world because they want to win, the difference from the 92 team they know they will win. By the way I hope with all my life that Spain wins hehehe

Cher Aaron

les commentaires de Pedro sont stupides
mais les tiens aussi.

l'espagne et l'europe sont des régions
du monde avec une richesse historique,
économique et culturelle à mille lieux
que celle des USA, pays jeune et SANS histoire !

Posted by: Pit | August 24, 2008 5:34 AM

Au fait,
Félicitations aux USA et à l'Espagne
pour ce grand match de basket !

Posted by: Pit | August 24, 2008 5:37 AM

Spain feels ashamed having people around like De Pedro, dirty xenophobics....

Posted by: carlos, Sevilla, Spain | August 24, 2008 7:36 AM

Please forget De Pedro's comments, he doesn't represents Spain. congratulations to USA, and also to Spain. may be best match i saw in my life....

Posted by: Raul | August 24, 2008 10:45 AM

Congratulations,usa,
incredible kobby, spanish people admire NBA outstanding players, but next time we will have great chances to beat them. i wish Calderon had played today. Futhermore the judges haved followed Nba rules such as travelling, and they have permitted much more contact than fiba.
No comments about De pedro.

Posted by: omar (spain) | August 24, 2008 12:33 PM

I would like to say that De Pedro comments are not representative of Spain.
About other comments related to Spain, we are everything but racist. A wonderful country, history, identity... and the world n.1 party makers.

Posted by: Cova | August 24, 2008 2:48 PM

Ups... I forgot....Aaron , calling us third world in your poor Spanish doesn't make you much different from De Pedro's stupidity

Posted by: Cova | August 24, 2008 2:52 PM

I am from Barcelona.

Sorry about my english :-)

De Pedro: you are... (not words), but please, don't say anyone you are spanish... we are not proud about you! (maybe you are so young or unhappy??)

Aaron: I've been in US and people are really kind with us. Spain is not so big and rich as U.S. but I recommend you to come and enjoy our history, painters, art, food, people and after that, you will have a trully opinion ( I am sure you don't know our country)

NBA: good players... and kobe is a gentleman
ÑBA (spain): thanks! we are proud about you

I am an American. And my skin color, for those who care, is dark. I thought Spain was amazing. The US team had no answer for that beautiful floater. As a US supporter I was worried. But as basketball fans we can all appreciate a great match up, and the drama of the pressure on the US team to deliver, and the Spanish team to spoil the redemption story.

I can't wait to see the Gasol brothers, Kobe and Wade match up inthe NBA.

As a fan of the Olympics, I am so happy to see US basketball paying respect to the Olympics

Adios Amigos

Posted by: ML | August 24, 2008 6:58 PM

ML. Great comment. Best thing about Olympics is that it is probably the only event that gathers the whole world together in fair competition.

US-Spain match was one of the best ever. Two competitors fighting with passion and emotion till the end. One fair winner whose followers, not only in this forum but everywhere, show their honesty and respect by acknowledging the good work of its opponent, that is Spain.. Thank you Americans. The hug between Kobe and Gasol at the end of the game represents us all.

Keep up this spirit and we´ll make a better world out of this. De Pedro... just go to sleep.., would you?.

ÁNIMO ESPAÑA!!!!!

Posted by: Marta, Spain | August 24, 2008 7:20 PM

Shame on you De Pedro, Spain is a rotten country and needs to be separated form the rest of the world..You have started it with a controversila pictures en route to beijing and that depicts how stinky spaniards are..
If I were spain I wont join olympics anymore they are worst than Hitler..

Posted by: Sel Fuego | August 25, 2008 12:54 AM

DE PEDRO NOT SPANISH
DE PEDRO IS STUPID
GO USA.. ARRIBA ESPAÑA..
AARON = BURROOOOOOOOOOOO..

Posted by: TURY | August 25, 2008 9:54 AM

De Pedro is not from this world for sure... I was kinda happy and sad when the US team won, sad because I always go to the underdog. happy because the US team really deserve it, as in really. how many times can we watch an NBA team who can defend, that is almost alien to them. Im happy still that Spain did a Great job in the finals. Spain and the US gave us a great basketball. Now I know why we like so much basketball in our country. Hopefully we grow a bit in height we can do you some beating too... spain and usa you gave us a great time, both countries never gave up

Viva Espana
Godbless America
Mabuhay ang Filipinas

Posted by: jimmyFromPhilippines | August 25, 2008 11:58 AM

Posted by: AngelSpain | August 27, 2008 2:06 PM

congratulations US basket team for a great work, for a great tournement and for a great olympic final. Congratulations to sapnish team for a great final too. In fact the best olympic final ever played!!!
I'm spaniard. I'm not racist and my country is not a bad country to life. I think we dont joke about asians or others and I'm proud to see our players in a gently attittude before, during and after the matches. All you are welcome to visit our country (Some did it in 1992 when we had the opportunity to organize an Olympic event). Then you can talk about your experiences.
