Order of Nations, As Promised

Here it is, the order of entry for the parade of nations during tonight's Opening Ceremonies.

Remember, the Chinese determined the order by the number of strokes in the first character of each country's name in Mandarin. For those of you who don't know how to write, say, Kyrgyzstan in Mandarin, consult the list.

The U.S. team will come in more than halfway through, sandwiched between Syria and the Virgin Islands. Greece is always first. The host country is always last.

Congratulation! Go China!

Ah last, right where China should be.

"Greece is always first."

How does Greece feel about that when obliged to participate in interventions? What if it needs time to collect its thoughts?

Anonymous - you DID know the host nation is always the last to enter, right ?

Posted by: Telin | August 8, 2008 10:45 AM | Report abuse

Oh yes, it's just fitting for other reasons as well.

China's last so not to outshine everyone below it. Dont want massive screams and then sudden stops for the US or something

Posted by: China | August 8, 2008 10:47 AM | Report abuse

China,

Oh, I don't disagree with you that the US would get a bad greeting. They (under the current administration) would be equally deserving of being last.

=====================================
Your cynical and hostile attitude toward China and Chinese people will not affect the rising China at all.
The opening ceremony is spectacular, and your comments only showed how immature you are.
Go China!

I'll say this about China. They really pulled a fast one on the IOC and showed what a bunch of toothless old farts they really are.

Unrestricted press coverage? Oh certainly. Of the athletic competition. Not of the athletes. Not of the country. Not allowed in if you've ever expressed any sympathy for Darfur. etc. etc.

Go people of China. I just hope you find a way to get beyond the Great Firewall into the true world out there.

to RealCalGal, what do 'they' in your post refer to? Can you be more specific?

Posted by: Spectacular! | August 8, 2008 1:04 PM | Report abuse

The Chinese government. They made all kinds of assurances to the IOC to get the games -- assurances they have not lived up to.

When will future Olympics be in the states?

Go China!"

Stick them where the sun never shines ! Those animals have polluted the planet with people and industrial DIRT ! May they rot in their own morass !

I am not Chinese but I was moved and amazed by the Chinese display of power and pageantry at the opening of the Olympics. Well-done China! Despite your many differences with the rest of the world with regards to certain aspects of the way you conduct your politics, I am proud of your accomplishments and hold your people in high respect.
Way to go!

~George:

Your racist attitude only reflects your ignorance and arrogance. Shame on you for your words, and your rotten minds if you have one.
