(Updated) Rowing: First U.S. Medal
Michelle Guerette surged from fifth over the final 1,000 meters to claim the silver medal in the women's single sculls at the Shunyi Rowing-Canoeing Park Saturday afternoon.
Mired in fifth at the halfway point, Guerette found another gear and turned in the fastest 500-meter splits over each of the last two segments of the course. Her final 500 was her fastest, churning out a 1:49.08 to hit the line at 7:22.78.
In the process she pared a 2.43 second deficit to finish only 0.44 behind gold medalist Rumyana Neykova of Bulgaria, who won with a time of 7:22.34. The bronze medal was won by Ekaterina Karsten of Belarus in 7:23.98.
In men's pairs, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss placed sixth after a sluggish start, 28.14 seconds off the pace of gold medalists Drew Ginn and Duncan Free of Australia. The silver medal went to the Canadian boat of David Calder and Scott Frandsen and the bronze was won by Nathan Twaddle and George Bridgewater of New Zealand.
The tandem of Megan Kalmoe and Ellen Tomek finished fifth in the women's double sculls.
New Zealand's Georgina and Caroline Evers-Swindell won the gold.
