Russian Sets WR in Steeplechase

Russian Gulnara Galkina-Samitova won the first Olympic gold medal awarded in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase and also set a new world record, winning in 8 minutes, 58.81 seconds. She knocked nearly three seconds off her own world mark of 9:01.59.
Kenya's Eunice Jepkorir (9:07.41) outran Russian Ekaterina Volkova (9:07.64) for second place in a race that included a major tumble by Spaniard Marta Dominguez with only about 200 meters remaining. American Jennifer Barringer set a new American record, finishing in 9:22.26, but she managed just ninth overall.
