Swim Flash: No. 8 for Phelps
Michael Phelps won his record eighth gold medal of these Olympics Sunday morning, swimming the third leg for the victorious 4x100 medley relay team.
Phelps, Aaron Peirsol, Brendan Hansen and Jason Lezak -- whose heroic anchor leg in the men's 4x100 freestyle relay kept Phelps' medal chase on track -- won in a world record 3:29.34.
The U.S. team shaved more than a second off the mark they had set four years ago in Athens.
Hayden Stoeckel, Brenton Rickard, Andrew Lauterstein and Eamon Sullivan took Australia to the silver in 3:30.04
The Japanese team -- Junichi Miyashita, Kosuke Kitajima, Takuro Fujii and Hisayoshi Sato -- won the bronze.

We on the West Coast haven't watched it yet -- thanks to the wonderful NBC blackout and tape delay. How does NBC tie up all the computers around the world?
Despite that, Congratulations Michael Phelps and TEAM USA!

Ron, give Mrs. Phelps a break. Her CHILD just kicked butt at the Olympics. How would you act if that was your child? I for one love to see the personal side of the athletes and their families.

Congratulations Michael! What an amazing accomplishment. It is wonderful to see such an amazingly talented and yet humble athlete. Michael Phelps provides such a great example of how to handle success with grace. It is a tribute not only to Michael but also to his family. He was obviously raised the right way.

Hurray for Michael, what a nice kid, now I can turn off the idiots on NBC. Too bad they, as Mark Spitz alluded to a few days ago, were too cheap and too shallow to have Spitz there to award Michael his record breaking medal. Spitz was never invited. Baseball would have never dropped the ball on that. Any manifestation of US national pride is a negative event by MSM standards.
NBC's sickening lackey coverage of all things positive about China, as if it isn't a typical totalitarian state, has been stomach churning to watch. It's been outside of Phelps the worst Olympic ooverage to date.
Michael Phelps is a sweet kid, a positive role model for American youth.

Way to go Michael and his fantastic teammates! His mom is entitled to feel proud, ron. How petty do you have to be? He's great, and she helped him get that way. Not bad for a single mom and a hyperactive kid. She deserves the attention, and the credit for raising him right!

Michael, you make me proud to be American! That's the real American spirit - perseverance right to the finish line. Good for you! Congratulations!
Mom Phelps shows a mother's pride - nothing at all wrong with that. In this age, it's nice to see a close family bond being honored - maybe it will have a positive influence where it is so obviously needed.
NBC? It's already been said. I would like to see ABC sports have a crack at it.

I also would like to comment that it is nice to see his mom supporting her son in such an emotional way.
You can always count on some people being stupid and saying negative comments about the mother or NBC or something else. Not everyone can just be genuinely happy for the guy and his family. Congrats to the above people who mentioned negative comments for winning the STUPIDITY AND NEGATIVITY AWARD.

Congratulations to the entire USA relay team for getting Michael in the record books, and congrats to Michael himself for some truly memorable races. My son, a swimmer who's 12, was definitely loving every minute of watching the races, the instant replays, and hearing Rowdy Gaines babble on in amazement time and time again. The 100 Fly was a classic that will go down in sports history as one of its greatest moments, and seeing Michael's mother and coach react to the finish was just priceless. Hope to see you poolside back in Baltimore soon, Michael. And here's to you being able to continue your legacy as a role model for our kids both in and out of the pool.

SHAME ON NBC for tape delaying the West coast. As previously mentioned, it's SATURDAY. Why not go live? Because they can get $750,000 @ minute times two with double the programming. Greed trumps common sense. Way to go, NBC! OK, Legally Blonde it is.

Is it against the constitution for holding back the free release of media in covering the games? Come on talk about totalitarianism, it seems like NBC is being very unfair. Someone should take them to court...any takes?!
BTW Congrats Micheal, its awesome seeing his mother's reaction, she must be very proud.
Ron - You are probably the only person who is dissatisfied with seeing his mother's reaction...grow up man, she is a mother and she is proud of her son..

Uh, it was shown live, at least on the East Coast. West Coaster should have checked the television schedules to see when it would be shown, and stayed away from the news and the Internet until it came on. As for Mrs. Phelps, she has every right to be proud of her son. She raised him by herself, and obviously did an incredible job.

On the eve of the games Mark Spitz was interviewed on ESPN. In response to a question about the Michael Phelps' chances he went into a plug for Botox which I gather is part of the "inspirational" skills he markets these days. So I'm guessing that swimming isn't really high on his radar these days.

"Phelps' just won his 8th gold medal in Beijing Olympics. The Water Cube seems to be his personal swimming pool! Phelps must be partly grateful to the well-equiped, high-tech Water Cube!"
There were seven other countries' teams in that pool at the same time. It undoubtedly contributed to the rash of world record times, but I can't see that it gave any swimmer or team an advantage.

I can't tell you her exact name, but the woman who won the Marathon was from Romania and trains, I believe, in Colorado Springs. I think she was in her early 30s. Her name was something like Constantina. The silver went to a Kenyan woman and the bronze to a Chinese.

Perhaps unwise to use the term 'freak', let's just say Phelps is a biological phenomenon.
The most amazing such specimen since New Zealand's famous racing horse, Phar Lap (who in his time was regarded as a biological freak).
Phar Lap won every race with ease, his huge heart being kept in the Australian Museum for posterity. His legendary body was the cause of much sensation in his day and the cause of much surmising ever since.
