The American women's foil team of Erinn Smart, Hanna Thompson and Emily Cross claimed the silver medal at the Fencing Hall Saturday evening after falling to Russia in the gold medal match, 28-11.
The medal is the first ever in Olympic women's foil competition and the first U.S. Olympic medal in foil since 1960.
The team knocked off the No. 3-seed Hungary in the semifinals, 35-33.
The U.S. squad was seeded 7th in the eight-team field. Earlier in the day the U.S. upset No. 2-seed Poland, 31-30.

This has to be the most surprising US result so far. I watched the semi-final on NBC's streaming video and it was agonizing as the last Hungarian fencer was erasing a large US lead. It was remarkable that the US held on and now is guaranteed a silver medal.
