Bolt Wins 200; DQ Gives U.S. Silver and Bronze

Usain Bolt of Jamaica put on a commanding performance Wednesday night in the men's 200 meters, winning in 19.30 seconds to break a 12-year-old world record and winning his second sprint gold medal of these Games.

"I've been saying all season that 200 means more to me than 100 meters," Bolt told a packed news conference nearly two hours after the race. "It means a lot because I've been dreaming about it since I was yea high."

Two hours after the race ended, the finish order changed. Wallace Spearmon of the United States had finished third but was disqualified shortly after the race for leaving his lane. He was celebrating along with Bolt -- even picking up his friend -- carrying the American flag around the track for several minutes after the race and was shocked when an official told him of the DQ.

That left Churandy Martina (19.82) of Netherlands Antilles with the silver, and moved American Shawn Crawford (19.96), the defending Olympic champion, up to the bronze medal.

When U.S. officials watched the tape of Spearmon's disqualification, they noticed that Martina had stepped out of HIS lane, and filed a protest. It was upheld, and fourth-place finisher Walter Dix (19.98) moved up to the bronze medal, and Crawford to the silver.

"As we were studying the video for Wallace, it was brought to our attention that there may have been a violation in lane 6," U.S. head coach Bubba Thornton said. "We saw the violation and appealed that result. We then went through the rules process. We wanted to make sure that the results of the race were fair."

But there was not doubt that Bolt won the gold. He broke the world mark of 19.32 set by Michael Johnson at the 1996 Games in Atlanta and became the first man to win the 100 and 200 in the same Olympics since Carl Lewis in 1984. He is the only man to win both events in a single Olympics and set world records in both. He is the first man to hold both records simultaneously since Donald Quarrie, a Jamaican star in the 1970s.

"Incredible," Johnson told the Associated Press after the race. "He got an incredible start. Guys of 6-5 should not be able to start like that. It's that long, massive stride. He's eating up so much more track than others. He came in focused, knowing he would likely win the gold and he's got the record."

Bolt -- unusually large for a sprinter at 6-foot-5, 190 pounds -- did not showboat at the end of this race, as he did in the 100, keeping his focus on the race from start to finish, grimacing with effort over the last 50 or so meters. When he saw his posted time, he collapsed on the track, then began a jubilant victory lap around the stadium, much as he had after winning the 100 last weekend in a world record 9.69 seconds.

During his celebration, the crowd serenaded Bolt, who turns 22 Thursday, with several choruses of "Happy Birthday."

Update: See the Beijing Sports Smog for a ton of postrace quotes from Bolt and others.

Sheer genius! Not taking anything from Phelps, but this guy has made this Olympics his own. Coming from a small, impoverished country like Jamaica, his efforts speak a lot of the triumph of human spirit. Lightening Bolt he sure is.

A true Sport Hero for his country. Bolt Worked hard in this race. No easing up like he did in 100M

This is great--here is a great sprinter, but also a natural actor, a man with great vitality and charisma and sparkle, a man who can transcend the sport and become an icon. I laughed and laughed the way he started celebrating even before crossing the finish line in his previous races. He is so cool.

Amazing athlete. What a star. And what a refreshing attitude and pleasant change from some of the joyless, soulless athletes.

(You need to improve your reporting by the way: you say he is "the first man to win the 100 and 200 in the same Olympics since Carl Lewis in 1984" and then you say "He is the only man to win both events in a single Olympics." Contradictory.)

Yep, there are several video links from major TV networks all over Europe who had the good sense to carry the race live. Not so for the geniuses at NBC. Not to worry though, the rest of the world knew that history would have been made again by Usain Bolt and were there to cover it live! Go Jamaica!!

Bolt is an amazing freak of anatomy perfectly built for speed.

Nonetheless, I've always been disgusted by the lack of respect sprinters have for their sport. Bolt's showboating and arrogance border on the obscene and no amount of talent will cover up his basic lack of sportsmanship.

Take a clue from the American swim teams ... The sportsmanship they all have shown is simply inspiring and what the Olympics is all about.

Posted by: Paul | August 20, 2008 11:09 AM | Report abuse

Jack Steen....read a little more closely, he is the only to win both AND set world records in both in the same Olympics.

The man is a winner.

He doesn't need drugs to do it.

Posted by: Benjamin Leever | August 20, 2008 11:12 AM | Report abuse

Ha! Michael Johnson can go stuff it! That arrogant twit had the gall to say Bolt could not break his record.

Posted by: MJ | August 20, 2008 11:13 AM | Report abuse

Comment @ Jack Steen - the statements aren't contradictory. He is the first since Carl Lewis to win both events in a single Olympics. You cut the second sentence short. He is the first in a single Olympics to win both events AND set world records in both. Lewis won both his events but didn't set world records in both at the same time.

As for Usain Bolt, I love his charisma and enthusiam. I wasn't too thrilled by his premature celebration as it sort of was insulting to those still trying, but the after celebration - the more the merrier. You really don't get a true sense of HOW FAST these guys are moving until you watch their legs moving when NBC shifts to its trackside camera. UB is a freak of nature in the very best sense!!

Posted by: Henry | August 20, 2008 11:20 AM | Report abuse

The American swim team was an invention by NBC. Michael Phelps didnt need any help to make his case for history but NBC appointed themselves his promoters. Thats what happens when you have a bunch of white men in a room deciding who you to back. They will promote their own. They couldnt be bothered to show either 100M final until more than 12 hours had passed, bring them at close to midnight eastern time. So I dont want to hear anything about the American swim team, it justs shows how singularly racist this country still is.

Usain Bolt is the star of track and field as Michael Phelps is in swimming and Shawn Johnson in gymnastics. Bravo to all those spectacular performers, including those from other lands. Their achievements are a positive contribution to the world of sports.

If people want to delude themselves into thinking NBC would be showing Michael Phelps at close to midnight when his event had happened 12 hours before the they are either delusional or Jim Crow.

Jamaica is sticking it to the racist and xenphobic Americans. America behaves as if olympic medals have their names on them before the games even begin. These have been the best Olympics for a long time.

He was celebrating winning the bronze medal when some pointed out he had been DQ'ed. He seemed to mouth 'Who me?', he then took the flag from his shoulder and looked towards the scoreboard. His violation near the start, on the bend, was very clear - you do not step on the line.

Yes my shadow you are ignorant. In the women's 100M there were 3 Americans in that race. Yet still they weren't sufficiently motivated to show the race until close to midnight after more swimming and more gymnastics. A 10 minute broadcast they couldnt squeeze into the preceding 3 1/2 hours on Sunday night. The men's 100M final is the premier track event at Olympics yet somehow these idiotic NBC execs decided you know what we're not going to show the race til 11.30pm EST. the most amazing single performance at the games and they try and make it a footnote to more Michael Phelps.

I mean Lauryn Williams, Torri Edwards and Muna Lee are in the women's 100M final and good lord you mean to tell me they couldnt squeeze it in somewhere before close to midnight? Bullsh*t. Men's final there was Walter Dix and Darvis Patton in that final again they couldnt be bothered to show that til close to midnight Saturday. Last time I checked they were American. As to the notion that there is no facilities for training, that goes to show you that not all the so-called hi-tech can make you good. Bolt has single handed bring track & field to the forefront. My hat is off to Bolt, truly one of the greatest sprinters of all time -- I would have liked to see his time if he had run all 100 meters instead of celebrating early, a youthful mistake. Sounds like, from his comments before the 200, that he has learned that lesson.

Wish I could see that right now, but even the BBC web page says "video not available in your region".

If Bolt ran and won the 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay, and the 400m....then in my opinion, his feat would be more amazing than Phelps' 9 Golds. Heck Bolt could probably win the 400m Hurdles if he trained for that too.

Think about it, Phelps swims 3 different strokes in the 200m and 400m. He competes against the same people in those events.....Phelps' swimming different strokes would be like Bolt being able to run the 100m & 200m races frontwards, backwards, and sideways. The problem is that running backwards & sideways are not events. Not to mention that fact that the same people do not run in the 100m, 200m, or 400m events, so he'd be running against athletes that are completely different from one race to the next.

Furthermore, the fact that Phelps broke Mark Spitz's (who was also a swimmer) records, should tell people that swimming is probably the only way that anyone can win that many medals in a single olympics. So for some folks to act like Phelps is the best thing ever is a bit distorted. Rather Phelps is a DOMINANT force in swimming, who's achievement was definitely amazing. However, I'll bet that if Phelps' record is broken, it will be by who?....yep, another swimmer.

Your wrong. I think the NBC coverage of the olympics is bias towards the US but not to any one race of people. I think they go by which sports are more popular in the US rather than what race of people are participating. I know the que ball is white and all the other balls are colored on the pool table and the white ball gets to knock the other colored balls in the pockets until only the white ball is left but your theory does not apply here.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 20, 2008 12:43 PM | Report abuse

Spearmon clearly stepped on the line not once but twice and possibly three times. He may not have gained any real significant advantage but he is experienced enough to know the rules.

Usain is just a 21 year old guy having a great time at the peak of his career on a grand stage. He isn't rubbing it in anyone's face or taunting his competitors. Compare that to the infamous celebration by the Sydney 2000 US 4X100 relay team when they struck muscle poses and slapped their chest with seemingly angry vengeful gestures.

Posted by: Pete_Ottawa | August 20, 2008 12:44 PM | Report abuse

Many of us who have been following Bolt's phenomenal career for years (he was already outrageously ahead of everyone else in the juniors at just 15) have been of the opinion that he'd cross-over (from the 200) better to the 400 than to the 100. Bolt is not a fan of running the 400 yet (more excruciating distance than the 100 is), but if he were to train for the 200 & 400 in the next few years, I predict he could take gold in both in London - equalling the great MJ's feat, which would cement Bolt's potential as the greatest sprinter ever.

Hard for me to say that, because I'm such a fan of Michael Johnson, but... Bolt could crack the 43-barrier. He is outlandish.

Posted by: Decathlete | August 20, 2008 12:44 PM | Report abuse

I think NBC's late coverage has nothing to do with racism and everything to do with profit. The more people they can string along until late at night, by showing the most popular events later, the more people they can expose to the incessant advertising.

I just watched that video posted by TOJ and it gave me chills! what an incredible athlete! I had said that MJ's WR would never be broken but I am happy to stand corrected. Usain Bolt is unbelievable! What a great day for track and field! Now does anyone think Warriner can go sub 43 seconds in the 400M?

Posted by: Leonard | August 20, 2008 12:46 PM | Report abuse

The fact that they brought the 4 x 100M freestyle relay late at night is evidence of nothing. the race was live. it was close to noon in beijing. its not like they were going to delay it and broadcast it the next day. i actually like the guy. he's a tremendous athlete but the way they fawn over him you would think some of the presenters like jim lampley are gay and in love with him.

Bolt is running to free us all from the chains of our oppressors, he is showing us the way to freedom from the robots who would put us in straightjackets, who would demand that we all march in lockstep obedience to state decorum. Maybe that is why the executives at NBC wouldn't show Bolt's freedom run.

To Paul: Poor sportmanship? I dnt think so... If u have seen the race u would have also seen Mr. Bolt being congratulated by and congratulating the 2nd and 3rd place finishers with no touch of arrongance rather a unique buoyancy which makes him most lovable to all including his fellow competitors.

Showing the 100M finals at close to midnight is saving it for those who dont want to sleep not showing it in primetime. and like i said they werent live so i find it hard to believe that they couldnt find an earlier broadcast slot. But Phelps wasnt in it or their next great love child Shawn Johnson.

You people that think NBC is racist are a bunch of freakin morons. SERIOUSLY.

1) Michael Phelps was shown live in primetime because his events were all 10-11am in China. With 12 hour difference it is primetime here.

2) NBC holds off showing the 100 (and probably the 200 tonight) till midnight so they can boost their ratings. People watching the show to see the 200 have to wait for the most exciting thing till the end.

They are not racist you idiots. They want the highest ratings possible. Showing the event live in the morning does them no good. They have spent a LOT of money to be able to show the Olympics. They don't care if the winning athlete is white or black. They want people to be interested.

I am sure tonight they will start the broadcast with something like "Can Bolt make history tonight."

Mr Bolt by any standards is still a pubertal male and his behavior should be judged as such. His antics towards the end of the 100 meters should not be assessed in the same manner as if he was 25 years old. He is, in essence a young man whom is yet to reach adulthood. While much of his behavior including his running and post event interviews is beyond his years, his little display at the end of the 100 meters was just that. Harsher descriptions are unfair. It is clear that the behavior was pointed out to him with good effect. Congratulations Mr Bolt, family, coaches and Jamaica University of Arts and Technology where Mr Bolt and others on his team choose to attend and train.

How can it be that every time one of these swimmers get in the pool it is a world record? It doesn't make sense to me. World records usually last a generation. As for NBC coverage, Thanks Rohan.
Never forget that we are living in America, and thus NBC should be highlighting AMERICANS. Saying that, the coverage on Saturday night was deplorable. 11:30 pm was ridiculous and without any prompts as to when the race would actually be shown ( they are actually doing that now ). Yes the 100m for men is the prime event for Track & Field but the coverage did not reflect that. I could pull the race card "Swimming vs Track" but I'll leave that to others,

Posted by: Hugh | August 20, 2008 2:05 PM | Report abuse

Not sure what NBC is saying about the unprecedented factors underlying the swimming events but there are two important reasons why world records are being set: 1) the suits, and 2) the depth of the pool, which is 1 metre deeper than past Olympic pools.

Dunno if this was touched on above, but I wonder if the "sea change" we're seeing with Bolt will result in more 6-foot-5-plus-tall guys coming in to the sprinting sports? Guys, let us all enjoy talking about Bolt and his performance here. Most of u might think NBC sucks! But, they should care about their bottomline so, they will try to do what every business tries to do. Maximize profits.

I wish there were a bunch of Pay-Per-View channels at least for Field and Track that always covered the events LIVE. To many of us Field and Track are the most interesting things at Olympics as we get to see them so less on TV.

Looking forward to 4X100m relay. In school days the relay used to be the last event and most entertaining sport event.

If it is racist to have gymnastics and swimming on before the sprints, then how do you explain last night's schedule, when the gymnastics, which was not live by the way, was on last, and the sprints and hurdles were on before them? Were they just throwing a bone to cover their tracks? No, NBC has been holding all of its premier non-live events for the end in order to get as many people to stay up late and watch their coverage. You think they are not loving all of these people marveling about Bolt's performance today? With all of the buzz building throughout the day, the ratings are going to be huge tonight, so I'm sure that the race will be on last, that's how they get as many eyeballs as possible. Is it unfortunate, yes, but frankly, showing it live on a workday in the US would have been a stupid financial decision.

Posted by: Joe | August 20, 2008 4:05 PM | Report abuse

NBC's strategy has been to save the best for last, so consider holding the sprints for the end to be a compliment.

The Phelps races were all aired live, btw, so NBC had nothing to do with when they aired. Same with most of the swimming.

Rohan's a prime example of why I always regret starting to read Wash. Post comments.

Posted by: Georgetwoner | August 20, 2008 4:21 PM | Report abuse

You're tirings. Racism exists and it permeates American life. Now since like I pointed out NBC didnt deign it worthwhile to bring any of the sprints that have gone so far at a reasonable hour one must wonder why. No Americans expected to win? Maybe. There were Americans in the races so one would think that would be motivation enough. On both nights they never announced exactly when they were going to bring these races unlike when they had the little display at the bottom the screen saying this swimming event was going to be in 10 minutes. Basically they stuck them at the end of the night when they could not have expected anyone but the diehard fan to stay up to see it. The broadcast of the races and the prerace interview were at the most 10 minutes. You want me to believe that between 7pm when BNC started on Saturday and 10pm they couldnt have found a slot? Considering it wasnt even live. It was tape-delayed they could have but they chose not. It wasnt important enough to them. Racist mother******s. They'd never do that to Michael Phelps. Hell one night they found idle time to be interviewing Phelps mother. What does that have to do with the olympics? Not one thing but it helps to flesh out the Phelps story and will help them sell more of those Phelps DVD they are hawking on the broadcast now.

You keep harping on about the balance beam final. They have been showing gymnastics almost every night if they tape delay one final I don't think that's unusual or anything particularly interesting. I wouldnt be even be suspicious if they had done one of the finals that way but 2 suggests a pattern. A pattern of behaviour that suggests something you'd rather ignore.

Posted by: Rohan | August 20, 2008 4:28 PM | Report abuse

Rohan, I think it's quite sad that your way to celebrate a great event is to spray hatred and anger all over everybody. I'd hate to see what you are like when something bad happens.

No one here is defending NBC's failure to show this live, but it's obvious to everybody that isn't an obsessive racist like you that there wasn't a racist motive behind it. NBC always, always saves the premier events to be shown late on its primetime telecast. It's a compliment to Bolt's achievement that they show it so late, because they want people to stay to the end of the show, and they know people will be so eager to see it that they will stay. It's quite cynical, but not racist. This is the exact same reason they showed the gymnastics so late at night on tape delay, which you still haven't managed to account for.

Yes, NBC convinced the IOC to have the swimming finals in the morning so that they could show them live in primetime. There's no way in the world, however, that the IOC would agree to hold the premiere events in the entire Olympics at 10:00 in the morning, however. (That's also a commpliment, by the way.)

Lighten up, Francis. Try to actually enjoy a great moment.

Posted by: norske | August 20, 2008 4:50 PM | Report abuse

Or satisfactorily accounted for, I should have said. Showing gymnastics on tape delay every single night is nothing unusual, but showing two track races like that is somehow sinister? For the record, they are showing every track and field final every night on tape delay, so by your logic, that should be nothing unusual, too.

Posted by: norske | August 20, 2008 4:55 PM | Report abuse

Norske stop apologizing for NBC. People would be so eager to see it they would stay up? I can buy that argument if during the entire night they had even made mention of even bringing it. They didnt even acknowledge it was going to be on til almost 11 Saturday night. How was anyone to know it was going to be on if they were a casual fan? And if they weren't a casual fan they'd already know since the result was all over the internet 30 mins after the race that morning.

As for the them showing gymnastics late on tape delay only one night, you are just showing your ignorance now. All three nights of the event finals were on tape delay and shown late, and on two out of the three nights, they showed the girls (yes girls, since so few of them are actually women) later than the men. Do you think that was because NBC is sexist, or because men's gymnastics is just much less popular and they were holding out the more popular event for later.
Nobody is defending NBC, they are just pointing out that their motivation for screwing things up is greed rather than racism.

The reason that Bolt may have had less exposure probably has more to do with chauvinism than racism. Phelps is, after all, an American.

And as to Phelps: he won 6 individual events and two relays. He also set or was part of 7 world records. How is that being somehow inferior to Bolt? Cretin. The man is the single most decorated Olympian in history. No one thought that would ever be done in the modern era where the competition is much harder. Dominance is very rare these days. So kudos to Bolt and Phelps. And Rohan, you're a bloody jackass.

Most were celebrating, a few questioned his "clean-ness", a few were racist and a lot were just hating NBC.

I am glad that I am in Jamaica so I could see the race live. And what a race it was!!!

Forget all the nonsense posted today, Bolt is truly phenomenal.

I remember going to several track meets and seeing him and Germaine Gonzalez walking around when they ought to be competing, and how offended/disappointed I was that he may not be fulfilling his potential.

Now he has shown that when you have setbacks in life all you have to do is keep trying and praying.

I look forward to seeing Germaine fulfill his potential, if not this year then next.

As to sportsmanship and celebrating: Only winners would understand. Just watch Shelly-Ann and you will see what it feels like to be a winner (not a whiner).

Shame about Spearman and Martina, they really deserved their medals. And I was really glad for them. In any event, they are still the second and third fastest 200M runners.

Imagine getting a silver medal for coming fourth? a bronze medal for fifth?

About the NBC "delayed reaction", it does not make any kind of sense financially or otherwise.

People are going to tune in to watch certain events live if available, regardless of the time of the day, so if you make the most of your money advertising soda, a lot of sodas could have been advertised this morining. People may even be inclined to drink it after the shouting of "Go Bolt Go!!!!"

It seems that NBC are trying to kill sports by buying the rights then selling it as 'stale pretzels'.

If race is an issue then don't worry. Black people will soon be the top performers in all events including ice skating, swimming, diving, volley ball and knitting.

Beverley, I resent your comments that Jamaica is an impoverished nation. Yes, there are poor people residing there just like here but you don't hear people saying that this is an impoverished country. Also, to all of the naysayers and negativism in some posts, you sound like Stormfronters and VNN forumers. They talk about how many whites have won how many medals as opposed to how many Blacks have. I am Jamaican by birth but live in the ATL area and I am very proud of Usain Bolt, Shelly Ann, and all of the other Jamaican medal winners. I am also proud of all of the other athletes who are participating in these games. Go Jam Down, you have earned the right to participate on this Olympic world stage and you make us all proud to be Jamaicans. And by the way, NBC is biased. You don’t focus on the 2nd, 3rd or 4th place finisher just because they are American; give the winner some air time first. Peace.

Jamaica is an impoverished nation and they have an iliteracy rate of 66%. They also have one of the highest rates of HIV. Reminds me of SE Washington DC!

Yeah, whatever, Typical Stormfront drivel. have you ever been there?

Here we are trying to celebrate the achievements of some of our Jamaican countrymen and women and that is your response. Shame on you.

Donald Quarrie also set records in the 100 M and 200 M in 1976.

============

How did Donald Quarrie set a record in the 100? He won the silver? Hasley Crawford won the gold. Unless you're talking about something other than the Olympics?

Hw did this forum change from one of congratulating Usain to dissin JA?

Impoverished is nt the right word, economically strained? yes, crime ridden? yes BT nonetheless, this country continues to progress and make great achievements with each passing day. This is truly a blessed country tht is fostering alot more Usains, Asafas, Shelly-Anns, Veronicas, Sherones, Kerrons, Sherickas and Melaines (All outstanding athletes)and more.
With each success, there r hundreds more in store in each aspect of life. I have no doubt tht this Beijing Olympics will serve as a great inspiration to Jamaicans nation wide and allow this country to improve with each aspect of life, nt just athletics.

Mr. Rahiq do not be dogmatic in your assertions, do your research, beat the books cuz Jamaica is the land of wood, water and gold. It is ironic tht wenever there is a great upset in this island negative in nature, the American press is all over it making it look as horrible as possible and being most unobjective bt whenever this island does something remarkable they seek to overshadow it in every way possible. As a result of this, several myths have emanated forcing Jamaicans all over the globe to defend this tiny little island. We are forced to tell ppl tht YES we do have computers, NO nt evry Jamaican smokes, NO we do NOT live in coconut trees! It is hilarious however, the things ppl bleve.

Let me set the record straight. Jamaica is a small island rich in resources, talent and some wonderful ppl who are decorating the track at the bird's nest.

Proud to b Jamaican!! All the time!!

Don't forget Melainie Walker.

The dust had barely settled when she broke the olympic record in women's 400m hurdles, emulating Deon Hemmings of 1996.

Two gold medals in 10 minutes in addition to the gold; silver; silver in the womens 100m.

Day before yesterday, USA replied to our clean sweep in the women's 100 by taking a clean sweep of the men's 400m hurdles.

Today we reply with GOLD (world record) and GOLD (olympic record)

I can hardly wait for the next episode of "Jamaican's in Beijing".

Go Veronica, go Kerron, go Sherone, go Maurice.

live from yaad,

gold;silver;silver

Dear KM,

I am not Jodi-Ann Maxwell (I hope I am spelling her name correctly), I am just a sports Jamaican fan who is very excited.

I know we have another finalist in the 110m hurdles (Richards?).

I hope they do better than we have dared to expect.

But I like your posts, keep them up.

live from yaad;

gold;silver;silver.

There is a (blog) on the internet called "Fourth place medal" I thought that was such a cute name until today, when the fourth place finisher was awarded the silver medal.

LOL ok, by the way for those of u who dnt knw, Jodi-Ann Maxwell is a Scripp Howard champion and a Jamaican, soooo "impoverished" n "illterate" we r, rite rahiq? by producing champions.

Bt yea u dun knw, we still taking the world by storm! 4x1 men n women, 200m women, mens hurdles, 4x4 men n women, ye we hot lyk tht! Standin at the top of the athletics medal table

Rahiq basically thinking what a lot of Americans think about Jamaica. That it's an impoverished backwater where people live in huts and no one can read. I don't know what gave them that idea but who cares. Ignorance is bliss. I know all Americans don't think like. what shocks me is just the amount who do. But living in america is like living in a bubble for most they know nothing that goes on outside the country.

Fedup - in case you didnt know white people run America. They dont do it for the benefit of black people or native Americans ,they do it for themselves. It's bad enough you have the white people defending their crap, I expect that. Then again Uncle Tom black people have been around a long time.

If I had said that they were biased or discriminatory instead of racist in the nature of their programming I wonder if people would be less offended. But call it bias, call it discrimination, call it racism whatever it is it is something

Posted by: Rohan | August 20, 2008 9:48 PM | Report abuse

Baby what does the fact that white ppl run America have to do with anything? That wasnt your point, remember? It was that NBC is racist, u need to support tht point n stop continuously complainin about the past. U cant move towards the future if u still living in the middle ages.

U r great at defendin your country and i applaud u extensively for tht bt this is a futile argument and u need to calm down bcuz no1 agrees with u n tht alone should indicate something to u, dnt u think?

Posted by: Fedup | August 20, 2008 9:52 PM | Report abuse

I dont need anyone to agree with me. It's not a popularity contest. You look around for people to agree with you you're a f***ing pawn. Let me explain to you why the point that white people run America matters. Discrination still happens. Its not the 50s or 60s where anyone can be lynched but it still happens. Something as obscure as home lending rates will bear this out. The Jena Six. Genarlow Wilson. Hurricane Katrina. I could go on. People are just better at hiding their feelings. It hasn't gone away, America is the most litigious society on earth they'd be sued from now til next year. They would never say oh its because its this little poor black country is winning all the medals why they're not on primetime tv even tape delayed.

Smart allick, America bein racist was not your point, it was the fact that NBC is racist, u made a direct accusation and are still unable to deliver a supporting argument. Your stupidity is blinding and obviously u knw nothing about the high road. My arguing with you is done, i have no time for people of low class standards

Posted by: Fedup | August 20, 2008 10:24 PM | Report abuse

Since you can't make the inference let me make it for you. White people run america. The major decision makers in american corporations are white males. Discrimination still happens. A situation has occurred that is very suspect in my view. i call discrimination. It's not adding 1+1+1 and getting 10. its adding 1+1+1 and getting 3. NBC is a corp an entity it cannot be racist as a corporate entity but the people who run can it can be and some of them most certainly are. And looking at how they did those 2 nights I'm very suspicious. I can never prove this short of them saying this and that will never happen. So it's just conjecture.

People agreeing with you is never a sign that you are right nor is it a sign that you are wrong. It just means they agree with you. People in Germany agreed with Hitler that getting rid of the Jews was correct and no one can say that was right. So while yes having the majority agree with you is useful it can also just mean you and the majority are stupid.

Posted by: Rohan | August 20, 2008 10:38 PM | Report abuse

"People in Germany agreed with Hitler that ..."

And there we have it! The Hitler analogy, aka Godwin's Law, aka Reductio ad Hitlerum.

When somebody in a discussion draws a Hitler analogy ... "once such a comparison is made, the thread is finished and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically 'lost' whatever debate was in progress."

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin's_law

Goodnight folks! Thanks for coming! Don't forget to tip your waiters and waitresses!

Posted by: Joe | August 20, 2008 11:17 PM | Report abuse

Godwin's Law isnt a law it's an adage which last time I checked is not irrefutable. Make the argument if you wish but like I said its not irrefutable. The point I was making with the analogy I believe is valid. Having the majority agree with you is no indication of right or wrong. It means the majority agrees with you. Nothing more, nothing less. And the reason I was making the point is Fedup decided on her own that majority agreement is a basis of proof. Which is simply not true.

So you can stop jumping up and down like a 12 year old.
