U.S. Wins Women's Soccer Gold, 1-0

Carli Lloyd scores in the 96th minute to give the United States a 1-0 overtime victory over Brazil in the women's soccer final. Redemption for the U.S., which lost to Brazil 4-0 in the semifinals of last fall's Women's World Cup, and goalkeeper Hope Solo, who had a great game today after the controversy of last fall.

"We thought about [the Brazil loss] all the time, I'm not going to lie," Solo said in a televised postgame interview.

Women's soccer? It's like kid's soccer. who really cares.

Who really cares? Well, let's look at the numbers. Dan Steinberg's live blogging of the game produced 167 reader comments. The corresponding thread on Steve Goff's Soccer Insider blog is at 94 comments and counting. The New York Times blogs produced similar levels of traffic.

And could a kid's soccer game fill the Rose Bowl and produce a large worldwide TV audience, as happened in the summer of '99?
