U.S. Woman Wins First Discus Gold Since 1932

American Stephanie Brown Trafton became the first U.S. woman to win gold in the discus since the 1932 Summer Games in Los Angeles. She also claimed the first gold medal for the United States in track and field here.

"I came to the Bird's Nest to lay a golden egg, and that's what I did," she said.

Brown Trafton, who finished third in the U.S. Olympic trials, won with a heave--her first one of the night--of 212 feet, 5 inches, topping Cuba's Yarelys Barrios, 208-9, and Ukraine's Olena Antonova, 205-4.

Hooray! Perhaps the U.S women will have a better chance in this event now that their competitors must also be certifiably female.
