Updated: Venus Wins; Men Don't

Venus Williams took her first step toward a possible second Olympic gold medal in women's singles, Monday evening at the Olympic Green Tennis Center, defeating Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland, 6-3, 6-2.

Sam Querrey wasn't as fortunately, losing his Olympic debut to Igor Andreev of Russia, 6-4, 6-4. Querrey will partner with James Blake in doubles.

Teammate Robby Ginepri lost to No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia, 6-4, 6-4, in a first round match.
