Smith Second in Parallel Slalom

Adam Smith of Bend, Ore., finished second in the season-opening parallel slalom snowboarding World Cup in the Netherlands last Friday.

"I'm super pumped. It's a good start to the season and it carries momentum into the next World Cups for sure. I couldn't have asked for a better finish," Smith said. "It's good to kickoff the season here -- everyone's stoked to be back again and having a good time."

Austrian Benjamin Karl won the men's competition and Patrick Bussler of Germany was third.

American Justin Reiter was seventh, Zachary Kay 13th and Chris Klug 16th.

Austrian women took four of the top five spots, with Doris Guenther winning and Heidi Neururer finishing second.

American rookie Andi Jo Stump was 25th and Erica Mueller 32nd.
