Hunter to Stay an Amateur

Top-ranked super heavyweight Michael Hunter has decided to remain an amateur, a bit of good news for USA Boxing.

Hunter won the U.S. Olympic trials in his weight class but failed to meet international standards to qualify for the Games, meaning no American fought in that weight class in Beijing. After winning just one bronze medal in Beijing, USA Boxing is trying to get its program back on track.

"I believe that staying amateur is the best decision for me right now," Hunter said in a USA Boxing release. "I think that this additional time will give me the opportunity to grow and develop further as an athlete. I have grown a lot over the past three years, but I still have a lot to learn in the sport before moving on to the professional side. I look forward to gaining more experience and representing the United States with pride."

Hunter is the son of Michael "The Bounty" Hunter, a former professional heavyweight fighter.
