Veggie Booty Recalled and More on Thomas

It's time to pull the Veggie Booty bags from the cabinet: The Food and Drug Administration posted a recall notice for the popular kids snack yesterday, citing it as a cause of "a multi-state outbreak of salmonellosis, with cases occurring as far back as early March." According to Veggie Booty's maker, Robert's American Gourmet Food, the product may be responsible for 51 cases of salmonella in 17 states. Most of the cases have involved children 3 and younger.

If you've got the beloved Booty in the house, dump the contents and call the company 800-626-7557 for reimbursement.

More on Thomas

If you remember, I wrote about the Thomas recall and the China connection in toy recalls on June 13. The Chicago Tribune, hometown paper for Thomas' owner RC2, has been following up on the company closely since then. Yesterday, the paper reported that the recall could involve many more products than previously thought. Apparently, a spot check by the Illinois Attorney General's office found that recalled pieces have remained on store shelves in packages as secondary pieces to other toys. Meanwhile, earlier in the week, the Tribune reported that a Missouri nurse reported lead in an orange metal Thomas train in early 2006. She filed the report with the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Have you sent Thomas trains back to the company? If so, I'd like to hear from you at parenting@washingtonpost.com. My plan is to keep track of the company's response and report the findings here. For my part, I sent them an e-mail with questions about identifying which lots our trains are part of on June 19. I'm still awaiting a response.

Chairman Mao is going defeat the capitalist yellow running dogs not with armies or bombs, but poisoning our pets, our livestock, our food supply, and our children.

But look on the bright side I now say to my twins when act up I just say, "If you don't behave I am going to buy you something from China or make you eat Chinese food." Boy does that really work they know when they are being threatened.

Well, now I don't feel so bad about letting my kids eat Doritos.

Actually I think they ought to recall Veggie Booty -- permanently -- just because of the name. There is something just annoyingly inappropriate about it. It's too cute by half and too "smart" for its own good.

I know, it's probably an offshoot of "Pirate Booty" (which my kids love, by the way, and I'm rather partial to myself--hope that stuff's not contaminated!) But with Pirate Booty, there a reference, an allusion, a joke that stands on its own. Maybe it's a dumb little joke, but I can deal with that. "Veggie Booty" just seems unnecessary.

Hello, I am with Viles and Beckman, LLC. We are actively investigating the current Thomas the Tank Engine/RC2 lead toys debacle. If any parents or toy owners would like their toys to have their lead levels check (in an independent lab in Massachusetts) please contact our firm. We will happily accept your toys, return them (if you so wish), and inform you of the results of the testing.

Thank You,
Chris P.
