About this Project
Six years ago, on Sept. 11, 2001, American Airlines Flight 77 slammed into the Pentagon at more than 500 mph, carving a hole five stories high and 200 feet wide. Fifty-nine passengers on board the aircraft and 125 individuals inside the Pentagon died on this tragic day.
For the 184 victims of the attacks on the Pentagon, the future site of the Pentagon Memorial Park is sacred ground. It is a permanent place for relatives, friends and visitors to come and reflect.
In this year-long series, The Washington Post and Washingtonpost.com will explore the intimate details of the construction of the Pentagon Memorial. We want to walk you through the stages of construction - from the planting of the Paperbark Maples to the delivery of the 14-foot stainless steel benches in Illinois and eventually Arlington.
