Happy Hour Roundup

* Quick note on tonight: The primary we're most focused on tonight is -- natch -- the Arkansas runoff, and polls close at 8:30 p.m. eastern time. We'll be blogging it right here.

* Blanche Lincoln pledges to support Bill Halter if she loses.

* It's all down to turnout, and unions are cranking hard: They made at least 30,000 calls and dropped 60,000 pieces of lit since the primary several weeks ago.

* But if Halter wins, it'll be big victory for progressive activists, too. There's Accountability Now, the group founded by Jane Hamsher and Glenn Greenwald, which worked hard to unite disparate liberal groups behind Halter when his challenge seemed like an impossibility.

* And a big win for the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, which says its members donated over $250,000 to Halter's campaign.

* Just in from the White House:

On Monday, June 14 and Tuesday, June 15, President Obama will travel to Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, to further assess the latest efforts to counter the BP oil spill.

An overnight trip now.

* Florida Senator George LeMieux says Obama should actually kick some ass, rather than just talk about it.

* Here are some more attacks that Harry Reid will lob at Tea Party candidate Sharron Angle.

* Jonathan Capehart goes there: Obama can't get too angry because of the specter of the Angry Black Man.

* A sadder and sadder end: Journalism awards named after Helen Thomas may now be renamed.

* Which would probably make Jonathan Chait very happy.

What else is happening?

"A sadder and sadder end: Journalism awards named after Helen Thomas may now be renamed."

Just when did this country become so mean-spirited? The woman was 89 years old and had been a WH reporter for 50 years.

What; with the revolt in their ranks against Quitter Palin, the Teabaggers are turning out to be the 21st century version of The Life Of Brian.

Which faction is Grizzly Sarah heading up; The Shrewish Front For The Liberation Of Neiman Marcus?

That Sharron Angle is the gift that will keep on giving. Please let her win the nomination.

No wonder Jesus got taken captive. His ammo store ran out of bullets to sell him.

While Congress dithers over unemployment and Cobra extensions here's what America thinks. I don't know if anyone in Congress is really paying attention to these polls or if they're all just blindly running for the deficit hills. Reminds me of the polling for the Public Option, sheesh.

"Three-quarters of registered voters think Congress should forget about the deficit and preserve extended unemployment benefits and health insurance subsidies for laid-off workers, according to a new poll commissioned by the National Employment Law Project."

"Citing deficit concerns, Democrats in both chambers of Congress have said it's time to start thinking about how to wrap up the extended unemployment benefits put in place to fight the recession. But 74 percent of people surveyed said they agreed with the statement that "it is too early to start cutting back benefits and health coverage for workers who lost their jobs."

Jus ou of curiosity, meme-master, have you ever been IN a union?

Don't you wonder where these unions get all this PAC money from?

Their members.

Now I have no earthly idea if a majority of Arkansas union rank and file members prefer this clown Halter to tha stooge Lincoln, if they like Coke over Pepsi, but I will wager that the Union Bosses did NOT consult their memberships before spending their monies.

And that;s why unions are a very poor political bellweather.

So?

Jefferson Davis had a long and distinguished military and political career of public service to the United States.

I don't know of any civic awards named after him...do YOU?

Helen Thomas is one of the most mean-spirited people around and always has been. She told the truth about what has always been obvious about her Mideast views: Jews are the problem and should all "get the hell" out of their own homeland. Go back to the places of genocide. Go anywhere, just get out of our sight.

Republicans have always known she is a hateful bigot. But since she is a hard leftist the left could pretend she wasn't. It is a disgrace that anyone ever named any journalism award after her. Good ridddance to her and her name.

@BM: Comparing Helen Thomas to Jefferson Davis is like comparing a fish to a bicycle. They have nothing in common except that both were on the north American continent at one time.

Plumliners still defending Helen Thomas. Disgusting, but good to have the ugly truth about them out in the open.

Ironic too for Obamunists to defend her on "question authority" grounds.

Bilge, great sweatshirt motto for the bats.

Wrong.

They both had long distinguished careers, (as held by their contemporaries), and were undone by their last decisions.

And...

They will both neither have any awards named after them.

Wow. You tough guys from the GOP must be so proud. It wasn't enough to get Helen Thomas' scalp. You want to do more to an 89 year-old woman who barely maintains contact with reality. All because you think she is "a leftist"? You make me sick. (And I feel very sorry for your grandmothers.)

sbj3 posted it last night, and Reuters confirms today that it did indeed publish doctored photographs.

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2010/06/08/reuters-fake-photos-ihh-gaza-blockade-commandos/

Reuters should have known better, since Little Green Footballs regular Kilgore Trout was on watch.
(this makes at least twice that Lizardoids have nailed Reuters on fakery and photoshopping).

You won't see me say this much anymore, but Kudos to The Bicyclist and his Lizardoids, (all 7 or so that remain), for keeping a good watch on this dishonest "news" organization.

Jefferson Davis was a traitor to the United States Of America. He renounced his American Citizenship, when he lead the secession from the Union.

Birther Bilgey is a modern day traitor, who still supports secession from the Union. He is just as much an enemy of this country as all other foreign hostiles are.

You're not being very "newsy", bud. It was not just us "GOP tough guys" who forced the hateful old anti-semite into retirement, but also a goodly portion of normal folks, and the two or three dozen DemocRats left who haven't been assimilated by the moonbat hive-mind.

"You want to do more to an 89 year-old woman who barely maintains contact with reality. "

Hey...go wail and gnash your tooth at the people who own and bestow the awards.

And, y'know, maybe I'm wrong...perhaps Stormfront will hire her as a guest columnist and the Klu Klux Klan can establish the:

"Helen Thomas Folk Origins Essay Award".

"Plumliners still defending Helen Thomas. Disgusting, but good to have the ugly truth about them out in the open."

Come on qb, it was about 90% unanimous here that she not only screwed up but should lose her front row seat. Someone shows a bit of sympathy for her because of her age and now we're all defending her? I call bs. You guys are best still at moving the goal posts. Congrats. BTW, when does your plane leave again? The poor woman faced a virtual firing squad from both the left and the right and it's still not enough for you.

The "poor woman"?

The old bat opened her yap and got what she deserved.

I don't recall anyone describing Don Imus as that "poor man" for the richly deserved fecal shower he got over his "nappy-headed 'hos" comment.

And no-one wept any tears ove Jimmy the Greek.

Save your compassion for those who deserve it.

Helen Thomas does not.

Posted by: Bilgeman | June 8, 2010 8:18 PM | Report abuse

Helen stayed on too long.

I wish we could go back to the way it used to be, when reporters just reported, and kept all their political opinions to their selves. Now we have even the White House Network Correspondents conflating reporting, with political observations about what they think.

Even PBS gets in on the act; on weekly news opinion shows, such as Washington Week..

I think it is stupid for professional reporters to engage in political opining, because, once they go down that path, their reporting is always going to become suspect to either one side or the other.

In the words of Jack Webb, "Just The Facts, Ma'am," and leave the political takes and spin, to the political operatives and candidates.

"Someone shows a bit of sympathy for her" is what I said.

Bilgey, you took my comment out of context, I did not say I had sympathy for her, I condemned what she said. Others may be nicer than I am. I call bs because #1, most of us hated what she said and also because there's a real double standard around here and it's not coming from the left. We're not afraid to question bogus statements from either our politicians, the pundits (hint: Buchanan), or the journalists.

mike, doesn't it totally crack you up about Orly, OMG, I literally cannot wait. She's running against some football player or something and has a shot. Wonder if Meg will want her on the campaign trail?

"Come on qb, it was about 90% unanimous here that she not only screwed up but should lose her front row seat. Someone shows a bit of sympathy for her because of her age and now we're all defending her? I call bs"

No, 90% did not say that. A few stand-up folks did. As many or more openly defended her, like wb above. And many others couldn't bring themselves to condemn her. And I didn't say, "all."

"You guys are best still at moving the goal posts. Congrats."

See above. I know this is your new catch phrase. Unfortunately, you never give an example of my doing it. But you just did it.

"BTW, when does your plane leave again? The poor woman faced a virtual firing squad from both the left and the right and it's still not enough for you."

Nice. Really nice. I'm perfectly happy that she was ushered out, years too late but definitely "enough" for me.

But Plumers like wb and sg continue to defend her, and that is disgusting. Nice try moving the goalposts.
