Sarah Palin tells followers to read article comparing BP escrow fund to Nazism

As you know, this blog tends to be dismissive of the idea that Sarah Palin's Tweets are newsworthy. But it really is news that Palin has now used her Twitter feed to instruct her followers to read Thomas Sowell's now-notorious article comparing the BP escrow fund to Nazism.

Late last night, Palin Tweeted the following about the escrow fund:

palintweetsowell.JPG

That's unequivocal: Palin is endorsing the substance of Sowell's piece, and telling her followers that they should read it.

Sowell's piece asks: "Is U.S. Now On Slippery Slope To Tyranny?" And it compares Hitler's use of the financial crisis to give himself "dictatorial powers" to Obama's use of the spill to force creation of the BP escrow fund:

[D]uring the worldwide Great Depression, the German Reichstag passed a law "for the relief of the German people."

That law gave Hitler dictatorial powers that were used for things going far beyond the relief of the German people -- indeed, powers that ultimately brought a rain of destruction down on the German people and on others.

If the agreement with BP was an isolated event, perhaps we might hope that it would not be a precedent. But there is nothing isolated about it.

There's been something of a split over the escrow fund between GOP elected leaders, who have mostly refrained from criticizing it, and conservative opinion-makers, who have compared it to some of the worst acts of tyranny in human history. Here you can see Palin, a celebrity quasi-candidate, throwing her lot in with the lurid interpretation favored by conservative thought leaders.

In response to Palin's reading recommendation, Jake Tapper Tweeted a good question for Palin: "Respectfully, are you comfortable w/ his references to Hitler and the Reichstag? "

Obviously, she is.

Doesn't matter with whom or what Palin/Sowell compares the deal, the whole basis of their argument is WRONG. BP wasn't "forced" to do anything; THEY decided to create the fund. To argue otherwise is simply a display of ignorance.

converse, I don't know if Palin understands cuz she's dumber than a rock, but most conservative politicians and pundits understand BP agreed and was not forced to do anything. They just simply must perpetuate the lie that Obama is in the process of a Hitler style takeover.

Sue: I don't think people have polled directly on BP escrow, but several polls have shown a strong public desire to hold BP accountable for the disaster, which is the next best thing....

Greg: Big Picture:

Frame The Debate.

Didn't Palin force Oil Companies in Alaska to put billions, on an annual basis, into a fund that she used to distribute free money to each Alaskan, and they had not even suffered any damages, or any loss of income, caused by the Oil Companies.

Quitter Grizzly Mama just Shook Down the Energy Companies, so that she could hand out free money to the voters.

In other words: She Shook Down The Energy Companies, just so she could have a massive, vote buying, Slush Fund.

Palin's behavior sounds much more like what Thomas Sowell was warning about, that what President Obama did.

Palin agrees to refund defense fund money after probe
Sean Cockerham | Anchorage Daily News

last updated: June 25, 2010 07:24:00 AM

An investigator has determined former Gov. Sarah Palin's legal defense fund broke state ethics law and said Palin has agreed to settle the matter by having the trust return more than $386,000 to donors.

Tim Petumenos, an Anchorage attorney hired by the state Personnel Board to investigate, said Thursday the legal defense fund violated state law because it "constituted using public office to obtain private benefit." He said the fund, which was set up while Palin was still governor, inappropriately said it was the "official website" of Palin, and made reference to her work in public office. Petumenos upheld an ethics complaint that was filed 15 months ago against the trust.

The trust has 90 days to return all the thousands of donations it received before she resigned as governor last summer, according to the settlement agreement signed by Palin.

Palin advisers created the Alaska Fund Trust in April 2009 to help her pay legal bills she incurred defending herself in the "Troopergate" investigation and a series of other ethics complaints. Palin's personal lawyer, Tom Van Flein of Anchorage, "strongly advised" the trust be vetted by the Alaska Department of Law to make sure it was legal under Alaska ethics law, Petumenos wrote.

But Palin instead chose to follow the advice of another attorney who recommended against seeking input from the attorney general, and instead to simply contest the "inevitable" ethics complaint when it came, Petumenos wrote in his report.

"The prudent thing to have done in my opinion would have been to go to the attorney general in advance," Petumenos told reporters on Thursday."

"Palin Boosted Oil-Company Taxes While Alaska Had Budget Surplus"

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=aYdZoyTvFrTc&refer=home

"The increase backed by the Republican vice presidential nominee will, at current prices, raise oil revenue to $11 billion this year -- almost twice what the state needs to fund its government -- state documents show. Alaska also has gotten more money from the federal government than its residents pay in taxes -- $1.75 per tax dollar in 2006, the most recent year available, according to the Tax Foundation, a Washington research group. "

"According to the state Legislative Finance Division, Alaska will get $11 billion in oil taxes and royalties -- $5 billion more than the $6 billion fiscal 2009 budget -- if prices average $106 a barrel, yesterday's price on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The state received $5.1 billion from oil companies in fiscal 2007, when it had a $1.2 billion surplus.

Each Alaska resident gets an annual rebate from state oil revenue, and this year Palin added $1,200 more to the $2,100 check each person received. "

Here's a great article that makes mincemeat of Barton, Rand Paul, Bachmann, Sowell and the regurgitating Palin.

"As it stands, getting BP to set aside a year’s profits to pay for some of the damage the firm has done in the Gulf of Mexico, using nothing more expansive than the power of persuasion, is simply good governance in action. People died, many others’ livelihoods have been ruined, and a foreign corporation that has no legal obligation to pay more than $75 million in damages will do so nonetheless.

Only someone deeply steeped in an almost religious reverence for some mythically pure “free market” could see it any other way."

She did this to take the attention off of her illegal trust fund, which had an unfettered right to withdrawal granted to herself and each and every one of her family members up to the gift tax exemption amount every year. What a crock.

She also did it to keep the controversy going because her ability to sell tickets to her speeches has been dramatically oversold. In truth, when she speaks in any venue having more than 1,000 seats or so, ticket prices have been cut deeply and then given away. She is no rock star. I assume that big-time reporters are not covering this story about her inability to sell tickets because they're all registered with the Washington Speakers Bureau too. What a crock.

After seeing how Obama and the Democrats seized GM and Chrysler, enacted Obamacare over the wishes of the American public, etc etc. its not surprising that when Obama made BP "an offer that they couldn't refuse", BP "agreed" to create a $20 billion escrow account out of the goodness of their hearts.

Sowell has a legit point but Obama supporters won't have the honesty to admit it. For them, Obama would have to admit publicly he issued an ultimatum and strongarmed BP to submit to it. For everyone else, based on Obama's own past actions its easy to put 2 and 2 together.

Our Constitution has a mechanism in place to handle situations like the BP disaster. Its called the judicial system. Obama ignored that because from a PR perspective, he had to "kick some ass". The "useful idiots" are falling for it.

Compare and Contrast:

BP has destroyed the livelyhood of those who live along the Gulf Coast.

President Obama persuaded them to set aside, Five Billion a year, for the next four years, in a fund that will be used to compensate victims of BP's reckless massive, and continuing Oil Spill.

Palin:

Forced Oil Companies in Alaska to fork over ELEVEN BILLION DOLLARS Each Year, so that she could mail large checks out to the residents of Alaska, where there was no state income tax or sales tax. Furthermore; those checks were not compensation checks, from The Oil Companies.

The were just vote buying checks out of Governor Palin's massive slush fund.

She shook down the Oil companies in Alaska, for more than double the figure, that President Obama requested that BP set aside,in a fund that will be disbursed to actual victims of BP.

BP is a British company but over 50% of its assets are owned by American investors.

You are incorrect that had BP refused Obama, he would had no recourse.

As president, Obama has the power to:

1. prevent BP from bidding/acquiring future oil and gas leases.
2. prevent BP from bidding on future federal contracts.
3. direct the Attorney General (who was present in the room when Obama and the BP CEO met) to step up investigation in BP criminal activity
4. seize BP's American assets (which has been recommended by some of his advisors on the far left) (see the HuffPo link)

Just an attempt by Saranoia to deflect attention from her latest ethics problems. I would like to point out the Alaska Ethics Board that keeps, sort of, acquitting her, consists of three people appointed by the Governor.
As far as BP, that whole story is a crock of Husky poo. Obama did not take over BP, any more than he took over the auto industry. And what is never pointed out is that the TARP money has been repaid, the auto loans have been repaid in full, and BP is responsible and accountable for the aftermath of the disaster. Certainly this could have waded through the court system...ask Alaskans who are still waiting for Exxon payments 20 years later how well that worked for them! I have no problem with the President encouraging this company to do the right thing and right now. It has nothing to do with a government being out of control, and everything to do with helping people. That seems to be the sticking point with Palin...she'd rather blather about the Constitution than do one d*** thing to help a real live hurting person. And instead of complaining about what she thinks the President is NOT doing, why doesn't she get off her duff and actually do something to make a positive difference in the US? Just once, Sarah? If you dig in the city streets or a major excavation that could impact the city street stability in a major city they are going to require a bond be put up to make sure there is money to fill the whole if you go belly up. Sarah Palin is right and wrong. We are on the same slippery slope as Germany at the beginning of the Thirties. I've almost finished the research for a book that begins in that period. Where's she's wrong? The resemblance is that the people she supports are but a hair away from those who took over Germany from 1931 to 1933. Our times and their times seem to be clones of each other.

The compromises that Obama has made in the neocons direction has weakened the voice of not only Democrats, but democracy. Not only is the system broken, but those who propose to be the repair men and women are merely wearers of sheep's clothing. Undeliverable and simply false political promises have made the slopes slick. Oil is making the slopes even slicker. And beware of men in brown shirts and uniforms, especially those with guns for hire.

Nothing can change the fact that Barack Obama received a MILLION dollars from BP for his presidential campaign - FAR MORE than any other candidate, ever.

Furthermore, the MMS - under Obama's watch - gave a security pass to Deepwater Horizon as well as a safety award, mere WEEKS before the explosion and spill.

OBAMA is in Big Oil's back pocket, and he OWNS this oil spill. There's no blaming this on Bush, no blaming this on Palin, no blaming this on ANYBODY other than Barack Hussein Obama and his corrupt administration.

Realist, what was it exactly that made Hitler one of the all time worst tyrants? Was it bank nationalization or corporate takeovers? Hell no. It was World War II and the Holocaust. Is there any evidence at all that Obama is seeking anything along those lines?

There was plenty of evidence that Bush sought to expand the American empire and he put policies in place to detain American citizens without recourse. ZERO complaints from conservatives back then, and I still don't hear you complaining about that, because those policies largely target Muslims, and we all know you don't give a $h¡t about them.

What's fascinating about this is that just like all the Liberal media yesterday who said "it's brilliant" to replace McChrystal with Petraeus - and forgetting that in 2007 you all called him Bush's stooge and a liar. Here you are complaining about someone pointing out the SIMILARITY to Hilter policy, and somehow forgetting that for about 6.5 years out of 8, You called Bush HITLER... but that was okay.

So perhaps Elitist can enlighten me, because I’m confused about what you object to in the comparison.

Did Obama not, just like Hitler, seek to activate people who don’t pay much attention to politics (and parroting Huffington doesn‘t make you ‘active‘) - YouTube the video "how Obama got elected" and watch how little the people in that line of voters new about ANYTHING.

Or perhaps just youtube "obama voters"

Or the height and breath of it is Stern's playing the audio of a poller asking obama if they supported all his view - they said yes - but the problem was everyone of the policies they "supported" were actually McCain's, even when they were asked "Do you think Obama's choice of Sarah Palin as his VP is a good idea"... to which these Obama-tron said "YES".

But moving on to your other objections. IS it that

you're objecting to the statement: a democracy needs informed citizens if it is to thrive, or ultimately even survive. (apparently so, see the above)

Or is it that you’ve found somewhere in the Constitution that it DOES says the president has the authority to extract money from private enterprise and distribute it as he sees fit and to whom HE desires?

Or are you objecting to: Our government is supposed to be "a government of laws and not of men."

Or that the Constitution says that private property is not to be confiscated by the government without "due process of law."

The rash of Nanny state laws show that this isn't an isolated incident of power grabbing and shoving Obamacare down 81% of the American public "For our own good" seems pretty much the same as Hitler's 'for the relief of the German people" BS.

Sara Palin - lightweight, dishonest, minimal to zero grasp of fundamentals of national character, statesmanship, human nature as it relates to national and international interaction, quitter, money grubber, fundamentally dishonest, a liar.

Mr. Sowell - Used to be pretty good conservative. Now a shell of his former self. Completely sold out to the right wing crazies.

Naziism is not government control of corporations, but corporations controlling the government. The correct definition: "Naziism should more appropriately be called Corporatism. It is the perfect melding of the state and the corporation. The individual does not count." And that is exactly what we have in this country. The $20B sop PB put up is just part of the cost of doing business, especially in keeping the non-critically thinking mass of Americans mollified just enough to keep screwing them. Across the spectrum of government, legislation and lobbying, the evidence is everywhere that the Fascist States of America is functioning at full steam. Both Sowell and Palin are well-managed by the Power Elite to play into that process.

America - a good 230+ year run while it lasted.

Mr. Sowell: Retire with grace. You have become silly and ranting in your dotage.

Palin shook down Big Oil, in Alaska, so she could have a big slush fund, to send out checks to people in a state with no sales, property, or income tax, and a state budget surplus.

Palin is The Shake Down, Welfare, Queen Of Alaska. She got back double the amount of annual revenues from the Federal Government, that Alaska paid to Washington. On top of that she doubled the Oil Shake Down Revenues, just so that she could buy voter loyalty with free money, that she forced Big Oil to cough up.

Liam-still,

What you fail to mention in your post on Palin is that Alaska, because it was admitted into the union only in 1959, has different laws than the lower 48. Because of this, residents of Alaska own its natural resources outright and are entitled to profits made off of them. This has been Alaska law since statehood in 1959 - - 5 years before Sarah Palin was born.

Furthermore, oil companies had a lock on Alaskan land before Palin came on the scene. They were not drilling, just sitting on the land, preventing competitors from extracting resources and doing nothing for the people of Alaska or the energy needs of Americans. Palin came in, said "drill or get off the pot and let another company drill", and got the oil industry moving again in Alaska while cleaning up the corruption.

Palin passed environmental laws and royalty laws, making oil drilling a win-win situation for all: oil companies enjoyed profits and certain powers, Alaskan residents saw a greater return on what is rightfully theirs, Americans benefitted from increased energy production, Alaskan government collected increased tax revenues, corruption gridlock was eliminated and the environment suffered no damage.

WIN-WIN.

After 2012, the country will benefit from these common-sense policies when Palin brings them to Washington.

Last I checked, GM was publicly traded and Fiat bought controlling interest in Chrysler. As for Health Care, it was a major part of Obama's platform in the 2008 elections, and it was openly debated for more than 1 year. The onlyh ones opposed to it are those who voted against Obama (that is, lost the election) anyway.

That is, Obama is actually very successful in following through on his campaign platform, however much those who voted against him may resent a politician who actually delivers on his platform.

So take your "an offer that they couldn't refuse" and file it in its appropriate place.

I sure wish Sarah Palin was as smart as our jug-eared president. Why, his handling of the Cambridge police officer situation will go down in the history books. And his "laser-like focus" on the economy has resulted in a mere 9.7% unemployment rate for 16 months running now - that's serious accomplishment! His passage of the healthscare bill that 63% of the population does not want and 38 states are putting together lawsuits to try to overturn shows real leadership. But his piece de resistance - - the oil spill that he has been "on the case since Day One" should be the template for all future presidents to emulate.

Yep, those 12 years of schoolin' his noggin' in radical politics in the faculty lounge, followed by years as a community agitator and shakedown artist for ACORN - - plus those 143 days as U.S. senator before launching his presidential campaign - - are sure paying off!

Anyways, the person who claimed GM has repaid their TARP loan is misinformed. They used over $6 billion of TARP money set aside in a separate escrow account to "repay" the loan. In other words, they used taxpayer money to repay a loan from the taxpayer. They did NOT use profits from their own revenues to repay the loans.

In regards to Obama seizing GM, he screwed GM bondholders out of their investment, gave the unions majority control of the company, and on top of that the US government now owns roughly 30% of the company. Obama is essentially the CEO of GM. That should be common knowledge by now.

I actually didn't hate her before the 2008 Presidential campaign. In fact, I predicted that she would be the VP to a conservative member of my family well before her name was announced. But ever since John McCain picked her as his running-mate every word out of her mouth has been deceitful, stupid, insulting, or a combination of the three. The topic of THIS PIECE is a perfect example.

Since you apparently consider yourself a thinking individual, I'm sure you can understand how a Jewish American like myself would be offended by her supporting a column which compares a Democratically-elected American President to a megalomaniac who was singularly responsible for the deaths of millions upon million of innocent men, women, and children (including MANY of my ancestors).

But then again, given your allegiance to someone as despicable as her, I'm guessing that you can't comprehend exactly how awful she really is to most people (and I'm also guessing that if this is the case, you're not nearly as intelligent nor informed as you think you are).

rdurig, I don't think you have the slightest bit of understanding as to what narcissistic personality disorder really is.

Actually, I KNOW you don't have the slightest bit of understanding as to what NPD is.

In order for a person to be diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) they must meet five or more of the following symptoms:

* Has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)
* Is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
* Believes that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)
* Requires excessive admiration
* Has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations
* Is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends
* Lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others
* Is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her
* Shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes.

blahblog says:

"their mistake is in thinking a majority of americans agree with their fringe delusions about obama"

Latest Gallup poll, out today, 6/25/10:

"In 2010, Conservatives Still Outnumber Moderates, Liberals"

PRINCETON, NJ -- Conservatives have maintained their leading position among U.S. ideological groups in the first half of 2010. Gallup finds 42% of Americans describing themselves as either very conservative or conservative. This is up slightly from the 40% seen for all of 2009 and contrasts with the 20% calling themselves liberal or very liberal.

Gallup poll also shows 46% disapprove of Obama, while 45% approve. Other polls (Rasmussen, NBC/Wall Street Journal, USA Today) also show a majority of Americans disapproving of Obama. It's no secret that his popularity is cratering and continues to drop.

We ARE the majority of Americans, blahblog, no matter what your unicorn-chasing, rainbow-bright fantasy world tells you.

Quine,

"Obama, who has denounced the Jewish people"

Uh, when exactly did this happen? I must've been out of town when this was in the news. I'm shocked I haven't heard about it already. Silly me, I would've thought this would be a big story.

Well?

Posted by: SDJeff | June 25, 2010 3:10 PM | Report abuse

quine, we'll see in 2012. in november, i bet republicans underperform due to the crazy teabagger fringe ideas they've taken up. historical patterns combined with the bad economy he inherited and the oil spill should have guaranteed repub majorities in both houses.

instead, they almost certainly won't take either house.

again, please explain how obama is a 'usurper' and how he 'denounced the Jewish people.'

The escrow fund was "voluntary" in the sense Obama made them an offer they could not refuse. Chicago Machine politics (or some would say a Mafia style shakedown) at its best.

I'll let you have the last word since its Friday and time to go home.

using the chicago mobster meme is the icing on your teabagger talking points cake.

they could have easily refused and even gone to court.

it's interesting how, in teabaggers' minds, obama is simultaneously an inept bumbler and a ruthlessly effective ubermensch.

The republican party is now made up entirely of conservatives with no more moderates. Moderates and liberals largely make up the democratic party. With 35% describing themselves as moderates and 20% liberals, that's 55% who aren't part of the republican party. Of course, are somewhat fluid, but the republican party has made it clear they have no room or tolerance for moderates. It explains the voting patterns over the past two cycles, and we'll see how it goes this November. Dem losses are to be expected, but I'd be surprised if it was anywhere near the level republicans are expecting.

TomR4,

It's no use citing facts, explanations or providing links to blahblog. He engages in that Liberal practice of discarding them all and pretending that he isn't aware of anything that is going on. He's like that annoying 4-year-old kid that keeps saying, "but why?", then you answer them, only to have them say, "but why?", then you give him another answer, only to have them look at you and say, "but why?".

Come to think of it, most Liberals cognitive understanding are about on par with a 4-year-old. Thank GOD they only make up 20% of the population. The other 80% of us get on with our lives and actually make this country work, while the remaining 20% sit around, suck up what we produce, stick their finger up their nose and say, "but why?"

"How do you square this, Ethan? I'd really like to know."

First of all, that article is from CNS and they are a conservative rag with a long record of peddling false information.

Second, 850 Rabbis? There's probably that many Rabbis in Brooklyn alone, nevermind the rest of the country. What makes you think that amounts to one hill of beans?

Third, the group making those comments is a conservative group of Orthodox rabbis. Orthodox Judaism is not mainstream Judaism. According to wiki, the numbers shake out as such: "38% are members of Reform synagogues, 33% Conservative, 22% Orthodox, 2% Reconstructionist, and 5% other types." And THAT is why the vast majority of American Jews disagree with this Orthodox group.

Fourth, two of the largest and most well-known Jewish orgs in the USA (ADL and B'nai B'rith) both support Kagan and applaud her nomination:

http://www.adl.org/PresRele/SupremeCourt_33/5754_33.htm

At the risk of repeating myself, you neoconfederates are a bunch of ignorant losers.

"the republican party has made it clear they have no room or tolerance for moderates."

That's funny. That's not what the Wall Street Journal said yesterday:

REPUBLICANS RAISE MINORITY PROFILE
"Nearly 40 African-Americans ran for the U.S. House or Senate as Republicans this year, according to the Frederick Douglass Foundation, a black Republican group. Eight black hopefuls have secured the GOP nomination in primaries, and several more are in the running in states where primaries haven't yet been held.

African-Americans tend to be significantly more conservative on social and cultural issues than whites, particularly on homosexuality, according to a 2006 survey by the Pew Research Center. The study indicated that 40% of black respondents were socially conservative, compared to 26% of whites."

Looks like the Liberals have not only lost their minds, they are losing their base.

Interesting how the GOP compares Obama to Hitler when Bush was as close to Hitler as you can get. After all Bush only:

1. Held American citizens in jail without due process and in Padillas case tortured him.

2. illegally wire tapped a sitting member of the House of Representatives.

3. Outed an Undercover CIA Agent

4. Broke no less than 3 constitutional amendments, which for some reason the GOP would not investigate nor start impeachment hearings, yet the GOP is now claiming to start impeachment hearings against Obama if they are returned to power for doing the same thing every president has done.

5. His VP claimed he didnt belong to the executive branch.

6. Allowed big oil to gouge the American people while running up record profits for no reason what so ever.

7. Oh and did i mention not finding and prosecuting Osama Bin laden, or starting a war against a country we didnt attack.

quine is obviously not interested in having a substantive debate or even answering challenges to her/his ridiculous claims.

all quine can do is toss out ad hominems against people who don't toe the teabagger line. the teabaggers have pretty much completely performed a similar purge of dissenting opinion in the republican party.

Quinegeology,

Its obvious according to your own words that no matter how stupid Palin is you dont believe it because you as a supporter are so in love with her message. We have a saying for people like you in Texas, "Sometimes you just cant teach the stupidity out of people"
You are a prime example of this statement.

Posted by: rharring | June 25, 2010 3:41 PM | Report abuse

Quine,

Is there a reason you DON'T RESPOND when your conclusions are exposed as utter garbage?

Examples:

1) As reported by CNS one right wing Jewish group opposes Kagan, therefore Jews oppose Kagan. FAIL!

2) The WSJ says that Republicans recruit African-Americans to run for office, so therefore African-Americans are fleeing the Dem party. FAIL!

3) More ideological people self-identify as Conservatives, so therefore you are the majority of America. FAIL!

4) Barack Obama is a narcissist. FAIL!

5) Barack Obama is like Hitler. FAIL!

Don't you see a pattern here?

Btw, nice sexist rant and childish taunts. Great way to win an intellectual argument.

NEOCONFEDERATE FAIL!

Quine, will you ever respond to the numerous requests for you to back up your statement that Obama "denounced the Jews"?

Posted by: SDJeff | June 25, 2010 3:45 PM | Report abuse

rharring, totally right.

Not to mention the TRILLIONS of dollars Bush put us into debt. But hey, $30B for unemployed Americans during an economic crisis (of their making) is TOO MUCH!

Screw the unemployed! Spill baby spill!

EPICFAIL.

Btw, good luck to Bill White! Wouldn't that be something if he could take the Gov. He's lookin' good.

That neoconfederate tag is quite clever, although I'd hesitate to use it reflexively, only when someone clearly deserves the label.

Speaking of confederates, has anyone watched "America The Story of Us" on the History Channel? It's amazing. It's strengthened my patriotism for our country's incredible story while renewing my anger at the South for what happened during slavery. Unfortunately, those attitudes have not entirely dissipated. The arguments that were used to dehumanize slaves at the time are used by many republicans today to demonize blacks and immigrants.

I don't mean to paint all southerners with the same brush, I know most of them are very good and genuine people. But their racism is deeply rooted and was obviously brought out of the shadows with the election of Barack Obama.

Come on Quine, I'm Jewish too. I'd love to know when Obama "denounced the Jewish people." That is quite an inflammatory charge.

People like Gov. Palin are not counting on reason, they're depending on emotion of the willingly gullible. It's sad, really. There are many Americans whose lives could be better than they are, whose opportunities and the opportunities of their children could be broader. People may have more feelings of loss of control with so much ready "news" and the ever-increasing pace of change. Unease among the populace leaves people vulnerable to offers of simpler life, simpler solutions. A smaller (and especially less expensive) government is one "solution" offered by Palin and many other "conservative" politicians. It is harder to see that in the 21st century we have a bigger population, a bigger country than in pre-WW2 America and that the costs of maintaining, keeping healthy, and defending such a land are greater now. A profligate Republican Congress with a Republican President financed our wars with deficit spending. Now that the actual accounts are in the open under Pres. Obama, Republicans and their supporters are trying to make hay with that issue. Shall we remain ignorant or wake up to who's doing what and why?

Thomas Sowell is a master of invalid arguments. Even George Will, no slouch at that particular art form, is a rank amateur compared to Sowell.
This is the same Thomas Sowell who once produced an op-ed piece "proving" class size in public schools doesn't matter after visiting a private school. Of course private schools can pick and choose which students they admit and can easily expel those they do not want. Public schools do not have that luxury.
So a corporation which was subject to very lax federal oversight, and violated both its own policies and US laws regarding offshore drilling should not be held accountable for the damage done by its slipshod methods. Had Obama taken no action people would be calling for his head on a platter. He did something and people are calling for it anyway.
I do not see the connection between BP's liability and the tyranny of a dictatorship, but I have little respect for Thomas Sowell, Sarah Palin or anyone who takes either of them seriously.
The US has been steadily drifting toward a tyrannical federal government for many years, and both Liberals and Conservatives are to blame. BP has nothing to do with it.

This is ironic: SDJeff says, "The arguments that were used to dehumanize slaves at the time are used by many republicans today to demonize blacks and immigrants."

I'd love to know how that kind of smear differs in any way, shape or form from a Nazi smear? Oh, right, it's different if moonbat does it — just because.

SDJeff: "I don't mean to paint all southerners with the same brush [how decent of you!]...But their racism is deeply rooted and was obviously brought out of the shadows with the election of Barack Obama."

No, that is not at all obvious. In fact, it is not even true. A presidential candidate with Tim Scott's values and outlook, for example, would trounce a paleface espousing Oboobma's extremist ideology.

I'm comparing the language used by political leaders back then to the language used today. For example, after emancipation, southern whites distributed fliers claiming lazy blacks are taking your hard earned money....the same garbage they say now, just to appeal to racists' basest instincts.

"SDJeff: "I don't mean to paint all southerners with the same brush [how decent of you!]...But their racism is deeply rooted and was obviously brought out of the shadows with the election of Barack Obama."

My dad grew up in Texas, I still have relatives there and in North Carolina. Very, very nice people, but I hear the way they talk. It's disturbing. They toss around the N word like it's the 18th century. When I think to the time of slavery and the Civil War, seeing the dangerous results of racism, it scares me when political criticism is taken to that level.

You say Obama is simply an extremist. The fact is that Obama has no extremist ideology. Conservatives made it up, as they would for any democrat, only they used racial code words to smear Obama, knowing the racist elements within the republican party would grasp right onto it, which they did.

Why is it every supporter or the GOP or GOP member is painting BP as some poor abused puppy that is being abused and forced to do something wrong? BP cut corners, BP is lying about how much oil the well is spewing, BP lied about safety measures, and now BP has to clean up their own mess, whether forced to do so, or voluntarily. But they have taken a page from the GOP. Stall, stonewall, deny access to records or employees, and flat out lie. Why this nothing of an ex politician who wasn't that great of one to begin with is given so much air time is beyond me. More frightening are her blind zombie followers that lap up everything she says as stone cold truth.

And to Palin: Let's clear something up. All US Presidents are going to have some bad ideas, or do something you don't like, regardless of which political party they're in, but until they decide to kill over 6 million people for having 'inferior genes', how's about we hold off on that name calling and insinuations? Especially when it's a knee jerk reaction from you, because it's a democratic president in the office, and you lost.

Thomas Sowell makes a great point when he says... "The Constitution says that private property is not to be confiscated by the government without "due process of law." Technically, it has not been confiscated by Barack Obama, but that is a distinction without a difference."
No one is saying that BP does not owe a LOT of people for what has happened... They are saying that it was not done in an upstanding and legal way.

Hey BP agreed to giving out $20 billion to an "impartial" fund run by Obama's pals.

Isn't that just peachy.

What a wonderfully persuasive fellow Obama is, able, simply out of niceness & not by using the pressure of his position to get a multinational oil company to entirely voluntarily hand over $20 billion.

Oil companies must be run by really nice pussycats.

After all if it wasn't like that & Obama had used the power of ofice to get it the Hitler comparison would have some validity. And the Washington Post, being devoted to constitutionality would have been as loud as Sowell in denouncing such an abuse.
