Top GOP power-broker Frederic Malek counted "ethnics" for Nixon

As you may have heard, Frederic Malek, a top GOP donor and power-broker and adviser to Sarah Palin, is suddenly in the news for his role in helping purge Jews -- otherwise known as "ethnics," in the euphemism of choice -- from the Nixon administration.

As detailed in a great story today by The Post's Jeffrey Smith, documents from the Nixon library have shed new detail on Malek's role. While Malek long ago apologized, he remains a major player in GOP politics today, and Democrats are demanding that Palin and other Republicans distance themselves from him.

But you have to look at a screen capture of this Nixon-era document to really get the flavor of what we're dealing with here. Check out this memo which featured a detailed chart of the number of positions occupied by "ethnics" in the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a memo written by an official other than Malek but featuring a line added at the bottom by Malek, who initialed that line "FVM":

malek2.JPG
"It is interesting that of the top 17 positions, 10 are ethnics," the memo says.

The DCCC is pushing this hard today, demanding that Palin and other Republicans disavow Malek's role with today's GOP. I don't know how likely that is to happen -- the episode is decades old and Malek is an awfully prolific donor. So I doubt Palin will be weighing in on this on Facebook anytime soon, but it's still an amazing glimpse of a sordid moment in our history.

UPDATE, 4:36 p.m.: DNC spox Hari Sevugan argues this is not just ancient history and is directly relevant today:

Mr. Malek has been appointed by a prominent Republican Governor,is a close advisor to the last GOP vice-presdiential nominee and is poised to spend $25 million dollars in support of Republican candidates in the fall of 2010. Mr. Malek is a key player in today's Republican party and that's why this is disturbing.

Really, is there any end to how low the press will go in order to smear Palin?

"is there any end to how low the press will go in order to smear Palin"

Palin is self-smearing. Just like a sh*t stain.

Greg: Typo in line 4 (ethic).

@ johnyt1977 : By hiring an unrepentant ethnic profiler (and that is the most charitable way to describe him), she brings it on herself. The press has to go pretty low just to get into Palin's universe of partisan hackery. I don't really need to go into all of Palin's numerous meanspirited rants, ethical shortcomings, and general lack of understanding of the major issues of the day do I? My most recent favorite, Palin thinks that the gulf oil disaster was caused by not enough "drill, baby, drill" on-shore drilling when she has consistently supported expanded off shore drilling in numerous appearances and statements. You have to go low to touch that kind of hackery.

Amazing story, thanks for reporting it Greg.

OT:

The Environmental Protection Agency issued a new health standard on Thursday for sulfur dioxide emissions, the first such revision in nearly 40 years.

The agency said that the new standard, adopted under the Clean Air Act, would prevent 2,300 to 5,900 premature deaths and 54,000 asthma attacks a year. The agency estimates the cost to industry of adopting the new rule at $1.5 billion over the next 10 years, and the value of the health benefits at $13 billion to $33 billion a year.

Putting the "P" back in EPA.

@srw3 Unrepentant? Malek has apologized numerous times throughout his career.

Posted by: johnyt1977 | June 3, 2010 4:39 PM | Report abuse

Greg: De nada. Plus I'm quite sure Nixon had people purging "ethics" as well as "ethnics."

Slave Sargent:
""It is interesting that of the top 17 positions, 10 are ethnics," the memo says."

What's interesting is how much the Nixon Administration sounds like a Jess Jackson or an Al Sharpton.

Not that any of you defective moonbats see that at all, but normal people do.

I think it's "interesting" that the DCCC is pushing this today coincidental, I'm sure, to the flotilla incident...

* Nixon aides discussed job offers to get candidates out of primary races *

A never before published memo shows that President Richard Nixon's aides had an elaborate plan to offer jobs to Republicans they believed were a "drag on the ticket" in the months leading up to the 1972 election.

The memo was penned by Nixon aide Fred Malek

[...]

Malek dissects every congressional, senatorial and gubernatorial election that would take place in 1972, assessing whether Republicans likely to run in those races would hurt and help Nixon, who was running for reelection.

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/virginiapolitics/2010/06/think_president_obamas_aides_w.html

I'm sure Bush did something similar to help "our candidates" (a reference to the Scott Jennings/Lurita Doan mess, if anyone remembers that).

@johnyt1977: I stand corrected. He is just a former, repentant ethnic profiler. I would like to hear the same kind of corrections from republicans instead of republicans talking about Robert Byrd's 5 decade old membership in the Klan, which he has repeatedly renounced, to show that republicans are really the friends of minorities and not the authors of the Southern strategy.

Posted by: srw3 | June 3, 2010 5:04 PM | Report abuse

@ Bilgeman : I guess you agree that Nixon is on the same level as Al Sharpton and deserves the same derisive commentary you reserve for him.

This from a party with a "senior statesman" Senator who organized his own KKK chapter.

The party of racial quotas.

The party of Sharpton and Jackson (ht Bilgeman).

The party of Jeremiah Wright.

The party that gave us the first "clean" AA candidate who didn't scare whitey, per Joe Biden.

Way to change the tone and stop the politics of personal destruction, Barack Obama!

And pardon me while I yawn.

You lefties should be really proud of you party and President. Really, really living up to their promises.

LMAO What a fraud he is.

@Ethan: Do you think the Obama/Nixon comparison makes Obama look good?

!!!!!

Posted by: sbj3 | June 3, 2010 5:12 PM | Report abuse

Notice how the Bush apologists on here don't acknowledge how obscene his past actions while in a position of power in the U.S. Govn't were.

All they can do is say, look, you have Jew counters too!

And sbj, this came up weeks ago when McDonnell the right wing Gov on a radical social cleansing of VA nominated him to serve in his administration.

It just happenstance this happened and because of this incident, the story has now blown up.

@SBJ, let me answer FOR you. No, they are not even remotely comparable.

But you are free to make the comparison even if it lacks a basis in the facts. You would just be wrong in whatever assertions you attempt to derive from that comparison.

I will give this to Fred Malick. At least those Right Wing Nut Jobs stay consistent. They were conducting their own private census taking all the way back to the Nixon era.

It's just happenstance, yep. That's why the Democratic PARTY is pushing this bunk. LMAO

Look over there! Bigotry in the Nixon WH!

Republicans are bigots!

How freaking LAME can you clowns get!!!!(Little rukidding lingo there.)

Really, your party is a joke. Your President is a fraud. A colossal, dishonest, divisive, partisan FRAUD.

Hey! It's Slave "Mayonnaise Mike" from the Honkie stronghold of Aryanton!

He babbles:

"And sbj, this came up weeks ago when McDonnell the right wing Gov on a radical social cleansing of VA nominated him to serve in his administration."

Hey, uber-moonbat, if Guv'nah McDonnell had initiated a "social cleansing" of the Old Dominion, don't you think we'd have done evicted your undesirable self right north of the Potomac already?

Posted by: Bilgeman | June 3, 2010 5:38 PM | Report abuse

The hysteria is all yours, Ethan.

I'm just mocking your (and your party's) colossal hypocrisy and dishonesty.

And you can say nothing about FACTS I noted above.

In fact, it's hilarious to see your hypocritical party all wee-wee'd up about a racial and ethnic quota memo from almost forty years ago.

In case you forgot, you are the PARTY of racial and ethnic quotas. Your party not only thinks they should be enshrined in law but thinks they ARE enshrined in the Constitution.

That Malek memo could have been written by a modern-day quotacrat from your party.

LMAO at you. And will be laughing even harder in November when this brilliant post-partisan political strategy of your President bears its fruit.

According to Birther Bilgey; Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson used to count Jews for President Nixon.

I think that is what Birter Bilgey is saying, but he is not very coherent when he is off his meds.

Slave rw3:
"I guess you agree that Nixon is on the same level as Al Sharpton and deserves the same derisive commentary you reserve for him."

In the context of his race and ethnic baiting and cynical promotion of social unrest based on those two for political and financial gain...absolutely.

I understand that Nixon understood that he was a President during an undeclared Civil War, with his opponents being financed and often directed by our declared foreign enemies, (White Cong rukidding, for example), and therefore was sowing dissension among his domestic enemies.

Nixon did the same thing with class divisions, trying to enlist the "hard-hats" to thump the college student hippie peaceniks in their fuzzy nuggets.

It does not excuse what he did, but it goes far to explain it.

Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson however, do the same sort of thing to shake companies down for the protection money and to make themselves a crooked buck.

Rober Byrd, Democrat senior statesman, who launched his political career as a prodigious Klan organizer, opponent of integration, and all-around racist and bigot.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/06/18/AR2005061801105.html

Treated for decades by Dems as the "conscience of the Senate."

But Democrats, even though they are the party of racial and ethnic quotas DEMAND that the author of a Nixon WH quota memo be excommunicated forty years later.

It would be impossible to invent political opponents as clownish and hypocritical as the Dems.

Unhinged is the party or Robert KKK Byrd making a hullabaloo over Fred Malek and a forty-year-old ethnic quota analysis -- the very type of quota your party champions.

How timely, just as his abuse of our ally Israel is becoming an issue.
