Sarah Palin plays media for chumps

Good stuff from Chuck Todd, who said on MSNBC this morning that his media colleagues are far too willing to hype Sarah Palin's every Facebook and Twitter update as huge news:

My only quibble is that Todd, in criticizing Palin for griping about media bias even as they lavish attention on her every Tweet, casts the media as passive victims in this process:

"I hope we don't hear from Sarah Palin about media bias anymore. Because it is amazing the ability this woman has to get media attention with as little as she does, whether it's a Twitter or a Facebook update, and she gets all this atttention."

Right, but media outlets aren't passive participants, compelled to lavish nonstop attention on Palin against their will. Rather, they actively make editorial choices on a regular basis to hype everything Palin says and does. So why wouldn't Palin continue to bash the lamestream media, when the media-bashing does absolutely nothing to dissuade them from playing along as she completely dictates the terms of her engagement with them?

The dirty secret here is that news orgs hype Palin's Tweets and Facebook missives because they drive clicks and traffic, not because they're newsworthy. Just ask the editors of Politico, which recently told its readers bluntly that Palin and the media have a "symbiotic relationship," because for the media, Palin is good "for the bottom line."

Result: No matter how many times people argue that the "symbiotic relationship" between Palin and the press isn't healthy for journalism, it continues unabated.

Some have argued that the media attention lavished on Palin has actually been a negative for her, as evidenced by her dropping approval ratings. But negative media attention actually plays in her favor. It plays into the narrative she's trying to construct, in which she's a warrior for a latter-day silent majority against pointy-headed eastern elites who are trying to destroy her because she represents the values and concerns of Real America. Negative attention only helps her tighten her emotional grip on her supporters. Palin keeps up the nonstop media bashing in order to feed this narrative.

Why on earth would she ever stop, if she pays no price for it?

She and the media will both see short-term profits from this symbiotic relationship, but come election time, the media will end up trouncing her again--and that will be the price she ends up paying.

Given the unassailable mathematical fact that half of all people are of below-average intelligence, Palin worship will always be with us. We should instead be thankful that given the unassailable mathematical fact above, 70% of Americans are turned off by her. But I guess appeal to a 30% market share is just too tempting for media organizations to ignore.

"good "for the bottom line""

The media has abandoned factual reporting. And thus, by extension, the American people.

It's "He Said She Said" till the cows come home, leaving America to decide on policies based on loaded opinions and not factual reporting.

The end result is the repeated savaging of our country by the corporate elite.

But quite honestly, if people can turn out in huge numbers for Obama and the Dem agenda and then turn around and elect the Republicans who caused the vast majority of our problems, then it's kinda hard to blame the media entirely. Granted, if the media did their jobs we wouldn't be in this situation. But the fact of the matter is that Americans should be smarter than to be unable to see through the media smokescreen. I think the fact that America is clearly NOT smart enough to see that is really what has me depressed about the state of politics. Who in their right minds could vote for ANYONE in the Republican Party after witnessing the Right's "Death Panels" melee last summer, the Right's almost categorical opposition to FinReg, the Right's denial of unemployment benefits, and the Right's stated support for BP and opposition to Obama's efforts to help Americans effected by the spill.

Seriously, who votes for the GOP after THOSE public displays of callus, destructive behavior?

The media has abandoned us, yes, but it almost doesn't matter what the media does if we are literally THAT stupid of a populace.

Greg, I was away, not as away as Mike from A (buon giorno, Mike), and somewhere in my catch-up reading I see that you had a birthday. Happy belated.

I saw Chuck Todd on MJ this morning. Yes, I vote we all stop talking about her. The best part of this a.m.'s show, aside from Joe being on vacay, was Mark McKinnon and Andrew Card making sense about some stuff. Don't ask me what exactly, but they sounded reasonable on all manner of topics, immigration, the Gulf oil spill, financial reform, etc. Refreshing.

I really cannot stand Chuck Todd.

I wish he would go back to deciphering polling numbers, which is what he excels at. He just seems way out of his depth after they moved him off that gig.

Every report he does feels like he's just trying to say whatever he think the 'cool kids' will like. There's such an air of desperation from his framing that screams "look, I'm one of you!" that makes me roll my eyes so far back I can see behind me.

Kathleen, welcome back.

We were talking here last week or so about what it might look like if the GOP got taken back by the grown-ups. Those two plus Bruce Bartlett might be about all there is, apart from GOP pols who have recently been driven out (Shays, not Inglis). Not sure how they could do it, but it would be better for the country.

Let's hope Palin is the Pied Piper that leads all the....rodents?.....children?....out of town.

Not to be the thought police, but these kind of comments just demean any substantive debate that might occur here. It's like criticizing how candidates look as opposed to their positions. There are contexts where mentioning that Palin has a special needs child, like her proposing to cut aid to special needs children, given that she is quickly reaching millionaire status and doesn't need state aid anymore whereas most parents of special needs children probably still need a robust safety net to help them get by. But just throwing that kind of sh*t up on a comment thread shows that the poster has nothing valuable to contribute and wants their 5 min of fame.

I think I'm typical of a person obsessed with her. I google her name several times a day. I know I need to move on but it is an addiction. She is like a soap opera and as a viewer I tune in every day to see if she has been exposed yet for the fraud that she is. Similarily I followed the OJ trial. I would like to claim that I followed Bernie Madoff before he was exposed but only one lone guy can make that claim.

The truly baffling thing about the media coverage is that she thrusts her family out in front of her like a human shield yet the media doesn't make even minimal inquiry. As a mother of three I would like to know how she could wear a business suit that has a skirt that clearly goes in at the waist at 7.5 months pregnant with her fifth child. Privacy shmivacy. As they say in court - she opened the door. She claims that the Obama birthers are right to inquire and that she has produced Trig's birth certificate. That is a verifiable lie - is it not worthy of meadia coverage?

Now that her underachieving daughter has glorified teen pregnancy and made a very lucrative business out of the endeavor can the media question Palin's skills or lack there of in mothering.

There are several big lies and lots of bones still in the Palin closet and the media doesn't address them. Hopefully they will be exposed in the Dunn and McGinnis books coming out.

I see Sargent read this week's Ombudsman's column. Fact of the matter is that Palin drives hits and sells more newspapers than anyone else -- including Obama. In that light, it's hardly fair to call her irrelevant, to ascribe unsubstantiated strategies to her camp (Sargent: ever heard of journalism?), or to say that she's exploiting the media.

If you really think Palin is irrelevant, stop writing about her.

To Brbr2424: Here's the trick. Ms. Palin and others like her generate strong emotional responses in their listeners/readers/etc. Doesn't matter if it's negative or positive. For those who feel positive, "like she's talking just to me", they get to feel empowered by feelin special. By fighting for America against horrible enemies etc. These feel good naratives are entwined in a narrative of who to hate producing the effect below. Which keeps people coming back for more.

For the negatives, "she's such an idiot, seducing the weak minded. She's dangerous", it's an addictive high produced by adrenalin in the brain when we get angry. You want to keep experiencing the high again and again. Even though you know it makes you feel bad.

Once you understand the trick the shock jock/talk radio/internet bloggers play on you it's easier to control it.

More on my obsession with Palin from above. The reason I continue to click on Palin "news" is that I get little tidbits of reward now and then. The open mic. remarks at the Cal State speech were fun as was hearing her in full mean girl mode in the speech itself. It's fun watching right wing Bill O'Reilly hammer her with friendly fire while she stares into the camera stammering like an idiot trying to come up with just the right bumper sticker slogan to throw him off track. Brbr2424, for someone who supposedly follows her so closely, it's amazing how wrong you are (that wouldn't be on purpose, would it?). She never claimed that the Obama birthers are right to inquire, simply that it is a "fair question." She also said that it is "their right" (not "they're right") but that she wouldn't bring it up. This is quoted directly from her Facebook page:

"Voters have every right to ask candidates for information if they so choose. I’ve pointed out that it was seemingly fair game during the 2008 election for many on the left to badger my doctor and lawyer for proof that Trig is in fact my child. Conspiracy-minded reporters and voters had a right to ask… which they have repeatedly. But at no point – not during the campaign, and not during recent interviews – have I asked the president to produce his birth certificate or suggested that he was not born in the United States."

She also has never claimed to have produced Trig's birth certificate (Trig is not running for President, you are aware of that, right?).

Do you know what the words "verifiable lie" mean?

Posted by: Lisa421 | July 12, 2010 12:45 PM | Report abuse

You assume that media attention that causes Palin's approval ratings to drop is "negative media." In fact, most of the coverage is not negative in the sense of attacking Palin. Most coverage is actually neutral in that it simply describes something she has said or done. She often says and/or does stupid things, and people are turned off by this. That is why her approval ratings are dropping, and that certainly does not "play in her favor."

It appears to me that the Media has been given fair warning on this already - she made a fairly clear remark on "the media" last SNL's season, in what was clearly a non-veiled threat to their freedoms.

I am confident, however, that Tina Fey alone can take her grizzly attitude and turn it into that of a slimy, recluse newt in a couple of new SNL skits.

Yup - that's all it's gonna take - women are such powerful persuaders, anyway, especially when directed at one another.

Posted by: pgibson1 | July 12, 2010 1:03 PM | Report abuse

Lisa421, I see you get hung up on semantics. "right to inquire" vs. "fair question". Anyone who thinks it is a fair question after all the independent fact checking is an Obama birther. Here is what she said about the birth certificate “Well you need to produce his birth certificate! You need to prove that he’s your kid!” Which we have done. See a transcript of that interview here http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com./the_daily_dish/2009/12/sarah-palin-has-now-made-two-very-clear-public-statements-in-the-last-day.html. You need to look outside of Palin's facebook page if you want to be fully informed. It sounds like what you are saying is that if Palin faked a pregnancy it doesn't matter because Trig isn't running for president. The story surrounding her pregnancy is very odd and should be addressed by the lamestream media.

Posted by: Brbr2424 | July 12, 2010 1:05 PM | Report abuse

Just like Fox is the #1 cable news program and they love to go on and on about it. Well that #1 rating diminishes in number every month as viewership becomes more and more diversified. The same thing applies to the web news and paper circulation. With all the choices the numbers dwindle and each and every set of eyes matters more and more. So someone like Palin will be top story just to keep the organization afloat.

She'll find out that the silent majority is actually really quiet because it's less than 20%. I'm sure it won't matter much at that point because she'll have collected millions by the time that point comes along.

Hoo-boy, you really ARE a full-blown Birther, aren't you?

Riddle me this, Batman: which of the following scenarios makes the most sense:

1)a young woman who has never been out of the country, who has no disposable income for unecessary travel, gives birth in the state where she resides. Said birth is noted in local newspapers at the time.

2)a young woman who has never been out of the country and has no disposable income for unecessary travel, decides to fly halfway around the world to an underdeveloped nation for the birth of her first child, presumably by borrowing the money for said travel, then decides to smuggle the child back into the US so she can pass him off as a native-born American - which could have been accomplished simply by staying home and giving birth there. She then bribes local newspapers, again with money she doesn't have, to plant announcements stating that the child was born in-state. Or, her child time-travels back 47 years to plant said birth announcements and cover up the "facts" of his fantastical birth halfway around the world.

You have to be several types of crazy to find scenario #2 more compelling.

Sarah Palin is Paris Hilton/Kate Gosselin/Lindsay Lohan for political writers. There is no difference whatsoever.

And only a true idiot would think that Palin will run for president or any other office ever again. She's making too much money and is subject to no scrutiny doing whatever it is she's doing now.

Even a moron like Palin is smart enough to know the Trig questions will be amped up 100-fold if she runs for any office again, never mind the demands for what newspapers she reads, etc. Not gonna happen!

Sarah Palin is a celebrity -- she could sell designer jeans, sunglasses, iced tea, and that would be okay. She could be in charge of publicity for the state of Alaska. But she should not be in charge of running this country.
If the media is going to report on her every Facebook posting or tweet, why don't they find out who writes her Facebook entries on her behalf or who gives her the "foreign policy" nuggets she throws out? Reporting used to mean digging for the real story, not just surface description.

Posted by: MinnyMa | July 12, 2010 1:46 PM | Report abuse

koolkat - or you can look at it this way: some of us operate on the principle that it's a waste of time and money to hire people to do things for us that we can do better ourselves. This is why my litmus test for anyone running for the presidency - or any office - is pretty simple: they have to be at least as smart as I am. George W. Bush wasn't; Sarah Palin isn't.

Then you have people like Lisa, who either a) don't think it matters if anyone she hires can do the job better than she could or b) tacitly admits that boobs and morons like Bush and Palin are smarter than she is, and COULD do the job better than she could. On point b, she's probably correct - but let's face it, that's setting the bar WAY too low.

Posted by: JennOfArk | July 12, 2010 1:48 PM | Report abuse

Yes the MSM reports her every move & comment(s) but they also rip her everytime she is mentioned. Her "negatives" are high simply b/c the MSM has repeatedly hammered her as "dumb", "stupid", "bimbo", etc. But of course the feminists NEVER back her (not her politics, but her position as a female politician). People hear these over and over and most people who don't know much about her just jump onboard with this.
She has had as much and MORE experience as an executive than Obama ever did! Look at what we're getting now that the people picked him. Nightmares for USA...

Posted by: denves | July 12, 2010 1:48 PM | Report abuse

denves - If you equate being the half-term governor of a state with fewer inhabitants than most medium-sized cities and quitting halfway through the job as being "MORE experience" than being president of a country with 310 million citizens for 18 months, something tells me that your powers of logic are not up to snuff.

Lisa421 remains curiously silent on the fact that she finds the idea of an 18-year-old, poor college student flying halfway around the world to give birth to her first child in an underdeveloped nation, then smuggling said child back into the country to pass him off as "native-born" and bribing newspapers to print birth announcements to the effect that he was born in-state more believable than what sane people accept as truth.

I'm sure Lisa is also woefully ignorant as to both the cost and difficulty of commercial air travel in 1961, or to the fact that a round-trip transocean flight in those days would have cost probably double the annual income of a poor college student...not to mention that a very pregnant woman wouldn't have been allowed on such a long flight in the first place.

Now, let's all just sit back and watch as she furiously conjures up theories in which Mao Tse-Tung funded the travel as part of his master plan to impose a Manchurian candidate upon the guardians of freedom & liberty & bravery & all that is good and pure 47 years in the future.

It's a rather curious proposition; the media's obsession with Ms. Palin is proof that they're not biased against her. It's a logical non sequitur.

Indeed, Mr. Sargent serves to only prove the bias, since his aim appears to be to punish Sarah Palin; to not let her take advantage of the negative media attention she's getting, well, because it serves her purpose. So what?

Obama has received an inordinate amount of media coverage, especially before the election - and all of it glowing? Was Mr. Sargent complaining then? I doubt it.

Palin draws a lot of attention. She often got bigger crowds during the campaign than Obama. This is newsworthy, isn't it? Even if the media will put their own negative spin on it?

It's as though, no matter what she does, liberals in the media will want to ensure that she gets the short end. Fascinating.

Sarah Palin reminds me of a dim-bulb-tart version of Senator Joseph McCarthy. Eventually she will utter and/or do things that so outrage the public conscience that a latter-day Joseph Welch will come along to inquire:

"You've done enough. Have you no sense of decency, madam, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?"

Sarah has become the GOP's primary tie to Tea Party activists.
Sarah has good relations with Christian conservatives.
Sarah has built alliances with hunters and other Second Amendment groups.
Sarah is building support among small business owners.
Sarah is helping to create a network of conservative women politicians.

Those groups cover more than 75% of Republican primary voters.

Sarah is putting herself in a positive financial position so that her family won't suffer financially if she runs for national office.

Aside from that, Sarah hasn't done much during the past year.

Only Sarah knows what Sarah will decide to do after she spends the next year doing more of the same.

That's why she is a big story and will continue to be.

This is typical of a comment by an anti Palin person. People who think they are really, really smart but are not as smart as they think they are. Please explain to us how it is an "unassailable" mathematical fact that half of all people are below average intelligence? You may want to take a remedial math or statistics course. "Average" does not mean that half are below the average and half are above the average. The term for that would be "median". There, I assailed your "unassailable mathematical fact". I think you have shown us where you fall on the the mathematical scale you so brilliantly constructed for us. So typical for a smug anti Palin person.

Thanks for the reminder, Greg. Based on the amount of attention the estimable Ms. Palin receives from the mainstream press and the public I have concluded that the Fourth Estate has become dominated by chumps and chump codependents. How this self-serving conniver has gotten as far as she has proves Mr. Barnum’s point that ‘There's a sucker born every minute’. She would be vaguely entertaining, National Enquirer style, if she were not so pernicious and fundamentally subversive to everything constitutionally conscious Americans hold dear. fastaire - doh. Some of us maybe aren't the mathematical geniuses we think we are.

In a large sample population, average and mean are pretty much the same thing. Don't bother with the "I was wrong" stuff, since I'm sure we'll now get to watch you unsuccessfully flailing about trying to prove that what you want to believe is true is actually true.

And as for Rush's audience being the "best informed", here's a quote from Kathleen Jameison of the Annenberg School of Communications: "We just concluded a study of 360 people, whom we watched watch the health care reform debate for nine months. And at the end of that period, we took the people who said they relied on talk radio, and by this, we mean primarily Rush Limbaugh. . . . And we asked them how well informed they felt. . . .Of all the people we watched, they said they were the best informed. And of all the people we watched, they were the least informed."

it is so amusing to see the same people get hysterical over birthers request to see the actual birth certificate, (and I had no idea a Presidential candidate did not have to produce the actual certificate as a prerequisite for running, per our Constitution) are the same ones who were hysterical over Bush's National Guard records, even after all were released. The hysteria reached such heights that it cost Dan Rather his job since he lied on national TV.

These are the same people, per comments above, who want to see Trig's birth certificate. You can't count? It was physically impossible for Bristol to have given birth to Trig and her own child in less than 9 months, unless the laws of nature have been suspended.

By the way, where are Kerry's military records that he was going to release in 2004?

Where are Obama's SAT scores and grades? Bush released all of his.

The press has been shut out of the Gulf with severe restrictions imposed by this administration. See Anderson Cooper's report over on CNN. Silence from most of the press over the Gov.'s restriction on freedom of the press.

Obama won't let Rep. Congressmen go to the Gulf. If Bush had done that, oh my. But, it is Obama, so it is fine with the press.

By all means, let us worry about Palin. The MSM is a joke.

Lisa, Requesting Obama's birth certificate was a fair question 4 or more years ago. It has since been produced and verified by independent fact checkers. I'm happy you agree that asking to see Trig's is a fair question. Maybe you can ask your girl if she'll produce it. The letter Palin produced 4 hours before the polls opened is very odd in itself. The obgyn has not verified she wrote the letter and won't answer the question of whether she attended the birth.

I'm not married to the idea that Trig is the daughter's baby although that is a possibility. There is enough circumstantial evidence that Sarah Palin is not the birth mother of that baby. The important question is who didn't give birth to Trig not who did. Other than a pile of odd stories and behavior by Sarah Palin there is no evidence she gave birth other than her own ehem..word.

The thing I find very odd is that nobody in the media other than Andrew Sullivan is willing to ask the question.

Obama's birth certificate's for us to know who he is, what his age is, and what his name is. Nobody knows what his name is right now, seeing we have about six names or more to his person.
Who cares ? We can just call the world's most powerful man "Him", "The One" or more simply just call him "What's his Name ?"
Or we can call him "Whatever his face is".

But I know who he is: he was identified by heaven so we don't have to do that. We can just trust this job offered to us on a platter by heaven itself.

The Mark of 666 (of the Beast) shows us who the Antichrist is, so it's dicey when the Mark stops on you. Well, Obama ran for office and got elected on Nov. 4. 2008. The next day the Lottery drew 666 which is a cursed jinx that's famous and everyone knows about. So, Obama must have thought "Oh God ! No ! Not THAT !"

He must have broken a cold sweat all that day, which was his day of triumph. Everywhere in bars, at news-stands, the Lotto number 666 was up and shown. it was on radios, in taxis, on tvs, shown to the full population of Illinois.

But the proof of this omen, cursing him for life, was when his election was announced in the next day's special election edition (of Nov. 6. 2008), on that same day the Lottery draw of Nov. 5th was published in it.

So, we don't have to look for his birth certificate, because we have a higher heavenly identification, which alone counts... although the lowly earthly birth certificate will come in handy for jailing Obama for high treason... Heaven and Earth will have to collaborate on this case: bringing heaven down to earth to bust the Antichrist !

Incidentally, if anyone has any newspapers from 11/06/2008 from Illinois, please send me the Lottery draw page scan: I'd like to spread it on Internet.
Kindly send the scans to me, if you can find them at geir.smith@yahoo.fr

Dennis_F, what a typically lame conservative attempt at obsufcation.

Your link? Nowhere does it say "these crowds are bigger than the ones Obama routinely draws." Nowhere is that even hinted. In fact, it contradicts your point - saying that the biggest rally for McCain-Palin had about 11,000 attendees, then noting that Obama-Biden had two rallies the same week that drew an estimated 10,000 and 12,000 attendees respectively.

That qualifies as Sarah Palin drawing "much bigger crowds" than Obama? I don't think so. Show us even one example of a crowd the size of the one Obama drew in Portland - estimated at 75,000. Are you still going to try this weak-tea argument, that because occassionally 1,000 people more showed up at a McCain-Palin event than showed up at a small Obama event that Palin was "outdrawing" Obama? Puh-lease.

Palin's more popular then ever thanks to the lamestream media. Palin ratings have always been high. If they weren't the lamestream media wouldn't be after her so much. The lamestream media lost creditability long before Palin. The lamestream has to cover Palin, so they won't tell the American people about Obama transforming this country to socialism. They have to attack Palin, to keep the people's mind off of the profits Obama keeps stealing. Palin is useful to the lamestream media to help them make the people forget about Obama forcing health care down the throats of the people. With attacks on Palin, the people won't focus on what a failure Obama is and what a far left radical he is. Why give up going after Palin if there's nothing about Obama and the Democrats that gets the attention like the coverage of Palin. Palin is ratings to the lamestream media. Palin is America and thats what the people wants to hear. Obama is anti America, anti American people, anti Constitution, anti business, anti profits, anti free market and anti capitalism. If you've heard one of Obama's propaganda speech about we have to do it now, you've heard them all.

JennOfArk, you asked me to post just one link to prove my statement that Palin drew bigger crowds. I did. She drew 11,000, and Obama drew 10,000. I never said "much bigger."

That was a quick search. Far more stuff there, but you asked for one. Right?

So, I did what you asked, and it still doesn't satisfy you. Why doesn't that surprise me?

You're not interested in the truth. You just want to bash people like Palin who disagree with your politics.

Or when they're completely unable to explain why they would believe something crazy/stupid like a poor young college student, grossly pregnant, flying halfway around the world to give birth in a dirt-floored hut, then smuggling the child back into the country - rather than just staying home to give birth. You know, like Lisa421 believes.

Geir Smith is referring to the Illinois "Pick 3" lottery. Snopes.com says he is correct, but that "666" turns up quite regularly in a twice-a-day, three number lottery:

Dennis_F - seriously? Now you want to whine about someone ELSE not being interested in "truth"? After you said this: "She often got bigger crowds during the campaign than Obama." and then said that an article showing that her biggest rally cited in a particular week was SMALLER than one of two Obama rallies cited for the same week, and only marginally larger (estimated) than the other, PROVED that she "OFTEN got bigger crowds"?

You wouldn't know "truth" if it smacked you upside the head, so now we're going to retreat to the Palin game and whine about how it's NOT FAIR that the truth isn't what you'd like to BELIEVE it is?

Lame.

As an illustration of the curious case of Sarah Palin I would like to turn everybody’s attention to the curious case of Anna Chapman. The media is saturated with her pictures despite any evidence that she was the ring leader of the ten expelled Russian spies or at least an extremely valuable Russian asset. Media producers and consumers seem to be extremely adept in creating substance from thin air. It’s not Palin or Chapman who plays the media - the media plays itself.
I can’t help but being reminded of “Being There” by Jerzy Kosinski.

"She claims that the Obama birthers are right to inquire and that she has produced Trig's birth certificate. That is a verifiable lie."

The mainstream media were too busy diving into every dumpster in Wasilla looking for trash on Palin to notice anything that Obama did before 2006, so it falls to others to make up for their dereliction of duty. Regarding Trig's birth-certificate; wake me up when the Trig-2012 campaign kicks off.

Posted by: leatherman1 | July 12, 2010 3:27 PM | Report abuse

Who cares about Trig's birth certificate?

AFAIC, Palin's story about his birth is far more damning. This woman, who's so concerned with the "sanctity of life", has her water break in Dallas, in what is a high-risk pregnancy (mother over 40, Down-syndrome child), and instead of going to the hospital, she hops on a plane to fly to ALASKA? And once arriving there, doesn't go to the hospital in Anchorage where she landed, but instead drives another HOUR to her hometown to give birth?

That sounds to me like a woman who doesn't reall CARE if her baby lives or not. What it certainly is not is a ringing endorsement of good judgement on her part.

Hey, guys, just for giggles, check this out:

"Airfare in 1960 from London to Nairobi (4K miles), a new super low fare of £165. The fare from London to Hong Kong (8K miles) was £311. Together, they are the distance between Kenya and Hawaii (11K miles), or £476. Airfares seemed to be based on miles back then when the airlines were highly regulated.

£1 in 1960 is £15.41 today. That's £7335, or $11,025 in today's dollars. Each person.

Per capita income in 1959 in Hawaii was $1,863. In 2010 dollars, $13,872. Each person."

That per-capita income was probably well above what college students in Hawaii were making. Where did Obama's mother come up with the kind of scratch she would have needed to make an ill-advised and frankly, insane flight halfway around the world to give birth? Where would she and Obama's father come up with the equivalent of 2 years' salary for a full-time worker for a little childbirthing-pleasure jaunt? And why would a couple of poor college students choose to throw away their money for this type of thing?

Maybe Lisa421 will explain it all for us.

Lisa421 - what part of "ACCEPTED VARIANT" is hard for YOU to understand?

"Judgement" is NOT incorrect. In fact, it is MORE correct according to the rules of phonics. The E is there for a reason - it is a phonics cue to the pronunciation of the G sound. Words that do NOT have an E following the G have the hard "GUH" G sound. JUG, LUG, MUG, NAG, HAG, BEG, RIG, etc. Words with an E following the G have the soft G or "zua" sound: LUGE, HUGE, RAGE, CAGE, BINGE, FRINGE (hah!). The root word "judge" has an E on the end - can you cite for me any other example of an English root word where the E is dropped when forming a compound word? I can think of only ONE: abridgment, and it's phonetically wrong for the same reason. Without the E, "judgment" phonetically translates into "jud-GUH-ment"; and in English, we don't DO glottal stops. So in addition to being an ACCEPTED VARIANT, that is to say, NOT INCORRECT, the spelling "judgement" is in fact, MORE correct, and the retarded (stop making fun of Trig!) "judgment" only exists because some moron back in the 1920s decided to come up with some Americanized "simplifications" of spelling. And he did, indeed, show himself to be a simpleton with what he did to this word. Now simpletons from all over the country think that it's the ONLY correct way to spell the word.

Girlfriend, what you don't know about your own native tongue is a LOT.

Oh really? I guess you're NOT tired of being pwned by your own stupidity, at least not yet.

Do you understand "Gaussian distribution"? I didn't think so. That's where you take a mathematical sample and distribute it so there is a bulge in the exact middle, and a slope down either side - this slope mirroring the slope on the other side of the bulge in the middle. Which is how IQ distribution is depicted.

In other words, failed math student, the MEDIAN in a Gaussian distribution correlates almost exactly to the AVERAGE.

People who live in dumb houses shouldn't throw insults about intelligence.

so, after saying i'm worse than a murderer, lisa again ignores the facts and says i'm worse anyway.

she is sadly typical of the birfer/teabaggers who now hold so much sway in the republican party. check out any of the rightwing sites -- her level of discourse is completely typical of what goes on there.

fact free, shallow, insult driven and hate fueled echo chamber rhetoric that is divorced from reality.

and now bachman is hinting that she wants to do a coup against the already rightwing leadership:
http://thinkprogress.org/2010/07/12/bachmann-gop-leaders/#comments

so people like lisa say i'm worse than a murderer because i prove her wrong and thinks she's winning the debate. unfortunately, at the birfer/teabagger sites like redstate, newsmax, human events, etc, that kind of discourse wins the day.

Hey, Parker....

I bet you didn't know that Herbert Hoover RAISED TAXES in 1931 and 1932, right in the middle of a financial panic. All Hoover did was to listen to people like Mellon and do the exact opposite of what he should have done to get the country out of its deflationary funk. Hoover also signed the Smoot-Hawley tariff of 1930, which set off a worldwide series of retaliatory steps by other trading partners that slowed down economic activity.

Now I ask you, Obama wants to raise capital gains taxes, cancel the Bush tax relief package in 2011 (Wall Street knows this, which is why the money is going to the mattresses), and raise all sorts of other taxes to fund is Rube Goldbergesque HCR scam.

Palin, whom everyone here claims to be an idiot, ( including Sargent I suspect ) wants to lower capital gains taxes and depreciation on plant and equipment and keep the Bush tax relief package in place to accelerate economic activity, and as a result, create real wealth and real jobs in the private sector where all real TAXABLE economic activity goes on.

Knowing what happened as a result of the Hoover tax increases, why would any sane person support the tax increases advocated by this President, knowing what Hoover did and knowing the result of tax increases in the middle of a Depression?

Palin is manifestly right, and Obama is manifestly wrong. Hoover's misadventure with tax increases in the middle of hard times proves it. However, I don't expect "progressives" to get this. They are just interested in tax increases for their own sake.

Obama will, I suspect, get his tax increases in Hard Times. The result? If Herbert Hoover's fortunes are any guide, the Democrats will take a savage beating at the polls; now and in 2012.

It's like reading the middle chapters of "Atlas Shrugged". One simply did not expect the American people to be feckless enough to elect an entire White House full of Ayn Rand villains. But it has come to pass. The good thing? Sarah Palin's increasing vitality as a candidate is a good sign that the American people are increasingly disgusted with the Political Class in Washington, despite the efforts of Sargent, Ezra Klein, and others to run interference for the corrupt, the wicked, the craven, and the greedy who are in power today.

Congratulations, Democrats! You refuse to learn from History. You have become the Party of Herbert Hoover.

Poor Franklin D. Roosevelt. What did he do to this "post-modern" generation of "progressives" to deserve this?

The people who are quibbling here are not able to deny this fact. Don't pay attention to that kind of denial of the facts. The official lottery website has the draw of 666 on it. It's about five hours before the newspaper special went to press. hehehe ! Get it ?
It's incredible because if someone had wanted to ruin Obama's victory they'd have done it exactly like that.

I'll not get involved in stupid wrangling, (no insult intended).
The Lottery drew 666 that night and that's all I'll add about that.
I don't talk to loonies.
Now secondly to lisa, I'd like to add this.
The important aspect to now start picking up here is that the meaning of the lottery is money. So the Mark of the Beast of 666 which the Bible says the Antichrist forces on the whole world's mens hands and foreheads....is money.

Looking at Obama this is confirmed. He's the biggest spending president of all history of all Humanity.
He's bankrupting the USA for generations making each man a slave to debt and he's flooding the world in a tsunami of tax-dollars.
So this meaning of money for the Mark is correct.
Refusing Obama's money as the Bible says one must do, is thus like Jesus throwing the merchants out of the temple.

the day he was celebrating the number 666 was broadcast as the winning number all across the state
i don't know what a pick is anyways hehe

Posted by: GeirSmith | July 12, 2010 7:16 PM | Report abuse

OK the correct language's probably to say this: the Illinois Lottery drew an Evening Pick 3 of 666
haha
but that's clowning around
The issue is not the medium it came through
in the bible heaven speaks through an ass
the medium doesn't matter
it's the mark of 666 which matters and what that means
the MEANING
rest is side-tracking
covering for Obama

Why do I speak about the Bible's revelation ?
We have an apocalypse in Tibetan Buddhism too
it's the same more or less
in the apocalypse the church gets destroyed
that's clearly stated
organized religion does not survive in any faith
buddhism too is ruined
our apocalypse is called the kalachakra tantra
that's the name of the book
the god is called kalachakra
it's my personal god
everyone is ruined because they follow the antichrist obama

Geir Smith,

You are tremendously amusing. Great parody of religious insanity. I applaud your brilliant combination of Buddhism, Christian Fundamentalism and Birtherism. It is the craziest combination since Paul Anka recorded a cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit."

Well Greg, You got your wish. A brief mention of that twit from tundras increased your 'traffic' manifold.

Yeah, saying I'm making "parody" is still another strategy to downrate as usual.
What about facing what I say frontally - face to face ?
Is facing the truth so painful ?
The number 666 was in Obama's special victory edition on Nov 6 2008, what part of that can't you get your head around ?
It blared out all day in the news, media radios etc.... on his triumph day... the day after his win of Nov 4th.
I don't know what you can't get about this.
You must have grave difficulty in understanding what this meaning is about.

Geir Smith,

A stunning spoof, really. You remind me of Andy Kaufman -- the more earnestly you insist that you are serious, the funnier your routine is. Please keep posting these hilarious nuggets -- I want to share them with friends!

bearclaw, if indeed Geir Smith is verging on self-parody, I am not.

And, it wasn't just a brilliant combination of only Buddhism, Christian Fundamentalism and Birtherism. Islam also has a tradition of predicting Armageddon (Arabic أرمجدون) when Muhammad supposedly prophesied several events to occur just before the advent of the Day of Judgment (Yawm al-Qiyamah). Al Dajaal (the Antichrist) will fool people into believing that he is the Christ and ask people to worship him. True believers will reject him but will not be able to defeat him on their own. God will then send the Messiah to earth (sound familiar yet?) to fight the Antichrist in an epic battle called "Al-Malhama Al-Kubra."

Scoff about the End Times at your own peril.

Scoff, scoff, scoff.

Hmmm . . . I'm still here.

Sorry, Lisa. Your attempt at eschatological birtherism just isn't as funny as Geir Smith's rantings. Some people have the gift, some don't.

Perhaps because I am deadly serious and not "attempting" to be funny.

so you don't work?
You're lazy and relying on others.
You just sit at home and make stupid, pedantic comments?

YOU are part of the problem.
Maybe if you had to work, you'd be of use to society, and not a drain.

Lisa,

"Deadly serious"? Really?

You believe that God is going to send his Jewish son back to earth, and Yeshua/Joshua/Jesus/Isa is going to fight and defeat Armilus/Antichrist/Dajjal. So who wins? Jews? Christians? Muslims?

It is hardly surprising that these religions develop subgroups that focus on a Big Fight at the Very End of Everything in which they all agree that "WE WIN!!!!"

The problem, of course, is the minor disagreement over who "WE" is.

Groups that feel persecuted almost universally develop "retributive justice" fantasies. This is no different than the Rambo movies, which allowed the United States to kick Vietnamese ass on the big screen in order to feel better about losing the Vietnam war.

Christians say that Jesus will return, the Muslims say it's Allah or someone, the Hindus say it's someone else and we Buddhists say it's the King of Shambhala.

I'll not develop the Buddhist prophecy because you people are ignorant of Buddhism.

But each faith is waiting for it's own.
The prophecies all say it'll be the end of all faiths and very few will survive. All the rest will be thrown (slowly after living good, long lives) in the lake of fire and sulfur of the Antichrist. But no faith will win over the others because the apocalypse prophecies all say the faiths will have become so corrupt and evil that they'll be destroyed. Now we enter the Day of the Last Judgment. You have to keep all these ideas in your mind or else you think in a disconnected sequence and it all jumbles in your mind as I've seen most posters here.

I'll round this up by saying that now that the Mark of the Beast is revealed upon obama, all the faiths must scramble, (or rather the few who can understand this must scramble) no matter what their faith is, because this concerns the whole world and no faith in particular.

Spread this message to the whole world fast and don't take any heed to the hecklers and doubters who have nothing else to do. This message must reach the whole world now.

The birth issue is heating up, so the news of Obama's Antichrist's Mark of the Beast 666 must reach the whole world fast.

Brbr2424, koolkat_1960m etc., you don't have to believe me:

"Trig Palin is Sarah Palin's son and it's irresponsible to suggest otherwise."

I had abandoned this thread because it had gotten weird and unreadable with GeirSmith's posts.

I don't think anyone doubts that Trig is Sarah Palin's son. I don't. I do doubt that Trig came out of Sarah's body ie. she gave birth to him. Lisa, you linked to a post by Dave Weigel who previously wrote as a conservative for the Washington Post. He is entitled to his opinion. He mentions that she had baby showers. Sarah surprised everyone, even those closest to her, by announcing she was pregnant in month 7. Then once she blew up almost overnight like someone who well --- just strapped on an empathy belly, people held baby showers for her. You say you are a stay at home mom so bring out the photos of yourself at 7 months pregnant and compare them to the photos of Sarah wearing a business suit and skirt. Keep in mind that she is petite and slim and should look more pregnant at 7 months than a taller or heavier woman.

The reason this story doesn't die is because it is something Sarah is more than capable of doing. I have never heard of a character who lies more than she does. She lies about things that don't need to be lied about.

I would love to be proven to be a crackpot. Please someone prove that she gave birth to Trig. I will accept a copy of a birth certificate or live birth or anything issued by the state of Alaska. I suspect I may have to wait until the two books coming out in the next year.

I'm an atheist and I've come to believe it is too much to hope for for people to reject religion. Many people have a personality that needs spirituality. I like to follow Frank Schaeffer's blog. He helped create the christofacist political movement that made Sarah Palin possible. He is still a christian but has rejected the fundamentalist insanity of religion. My new hope is that Frank Schaeffer's vision for the future of religion can be realized.

The number 666 was all over Illinois thanks to the Lottery, the day Obama celebrated his victory.
What part of this is difficult to understand ?
That ruined Obama's life once and for all, we just have to reveal this simple honest-to-god fact.

Posted by: GeirSmith | July 13, 2010 8:03 PM | Report abuse

I don't know if this thread is dead but....
They'll have to sue Obama for his documents but heaven's already cast it's choice:
Obama's gotten the Mark of the Beast 666 in his special victory news-edition.
Fast backwards: Obama gets elected in the evening 8 o:clock - next day he celebrates all day, until 7 o:clock when the nightmare starts and his life is ruined. The Illinois Lottery draws 666 in the evening Pick, and blares it all over on all TVs, radios, news-media etc...
Obama's special edition goes to press at midnight that night,... and the lottery draw is in it.

Spread this message fast to everyone that Obama's the one shown-by-heaven. Also, the Mark of the Beast 666 is money seeing it's the Lottery. So, that means his Mark of the Beast is his money that he forces on everyone's hand and forehead. Refuse Obama's money (the biggest spending president in History).

If collectors have the 11/06/2008 newspaper of Obama's victory (the Lottery scan page is enough) please send it to me geir.smith@yahoo.fr
