Sharron Angle: Obama and Reid are making government our false "God"

Nevada journalist Jon Ralston unearths an interview that Sharron Angle did with Christian radio that is perhaps her most eyebrow-raising contribution to the conversation yet. In it, she says that government expansion under Obama and Dems is an effort to make government into our "God."

In case you're tempted to dismiss this as a figure of speech, Angle makes it clear that she's being literal, adding that our dependence on government is "idolatry" and that this is a "violation of the First Commandment." Here's the key bit:

"And these programs that you mentioned -- that Obama has going with Reid and Pelosi pushing them forward -- are all entitlement programs built to make government our God. And that's really what's happening in this country is a violation of the First Commandment. We have become a country entrenched in idolatry, and that idolatry is the dependency upon our government. We're supposed to depend upon God for our protection and our provision and for our daily bread, not for our government."

As Ralston puts it: "This mindset will further reinforce to some that religion infuses everything Angle believes but also might explain her hostility to government programs, believing essentially they are produced by a false God."

And, indeed, Angle also explains her zeal for politics as follows:

"And I knew that all along when I started praying over a year ago over it. And this just seemed to be the battle that I needed to go to war with. And I need warriors to stand beside me. You know, this is a war of ideology, a war of thoughts and of faith. And we need people to really stand for faith and trust, not hope and change."

Is it a stretch to conclude that Angle genuinely views the Nevada Senate race as a Holy War?

No wonder she thinks voters may soon be resorting to "Second Amendment remedies." Big Government has put our national soul at risk.

Who Would Jesus Use 'Second Amendment Remedies' On?

Her arguments are not only absurd and counter-productive for the country, they are totally inconsistent with each other!

Greg,

You need to contact that Christian Radio station, and ask them how the feel about Sharron Angle's support for The Church Of Scientology.

Ask them how she can claim to be both a Christian and a backer of a Cult that worships space aliens. False Gods, Indeed Sharron!!!

"She also defends her advocacy for a Church of Scientology-developed quack drug therapy program by claiming Scientologists are the victims of religious persecution."

Since she "depends on Second Amendment remedies," then ANGLE IS MAKING GUNS OUR FALSE GOD.

I get the feeling that if we went to Angle's house we would find that she has 33,568 cats roming around in her living room.

Crazy is as crazy does.

Thanks Greg, and most welcome re: emails. I'll keep em coming.

As for Angle, if she's not clinically insane, she certainly has some form of ADD.

That's just what this country and this Congress needs: a right wing extremist Tea Partier who can't even keep her OWN "policies" in line with each other.

How in the WORLD does anyone think that a person like that would actually benefit Nevada and the country? They'd have to be as delusional as she is. Just incomprehensible.

How does Sharron Obtuse Angle feel about Granny Grizzly Palin Worshipping Gov. Jan Brewer's Giant Testicles, and are they real or just False Cods?

Has Gov. Jan Brewer allocated sufficient funding, to establish concentration camps for rounded up ,undocumented embryos?

Does Gov. Jan Brewer know how much Granny Grizzly admires her large testicles?

Can Granny Grizzly be banned from Arizona for using the Spanish word for Testicles?

This falls apart pretty fast.

Let's take "Vengeance is mine, saith the lord."

I believe this means that government controlled police are an interference with the first amendment. Justice is God's job, not the government's job. Not to mention, the 2nd Amendment is a problem, too. Government can't allow people to do God's job, and take vengeance into their own hands with their own gun. Shooting a man who is trying to rob you is vengeance, plain and simple. That's God's work, not yours.

This means the only acceptable option is to PRAY for justice. To do anything else is state-sponsored or state-sanctioned blasphemy.

Posted by: theorajones1 | August 4, 2010 11:07 AM | Report abuse

Well, just to play devil's advocate, the Second Amendment asserts the people's existing rights to bear arms vis a vis government, so it's not contradictory to believe in personal gun ownership as guaranteed by the Second Amendment while also believing that the government is itself a false god that must be resisted.

It's a little less coherent to aspire to be a US Senator while holding that viewpoint. Religious ideologues generally don't try to join the churches they hate.

Crazy From All Angles:

"FLASHBACK: GOPer Angle Spoke Out Against Fluoride In Water Supply"

http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/06/flashback-goper-angle-spoke-out-against-fluoride-in-water-supply.php

"he Las Vegas Review-Journal reported in April 1999 that the state assembly, of which Angle was a member, voted 26-16 for a bill that required fluoridation in two counties including the cities of Reno and Las Vegas. Angle was a strong opponent of the measure. The paper reported (via Nexis):

Before the vote, Assemblywoman Sharron Angle, R-Reno, sought to postpone the vote so she could add an amendment to block fluoridation in Washoe County. The Washoe County Commission in 1992 rejected fluoridation, and Angle said the Legislature should not approve fluoridation in her county without a vote of its people.

While another member of the Assembly suggested opponents of the measure were worried about the financial implications of fluoridation, the Review-Journal reported: "Angle said she simply does not like fluoride." Angle added she believed most fluoride used in water supplies could contain "lead, arsenic, [or] mercury."

Here's what the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has to say on the matter:

"For 65 years, community water fluoridation has been a safe and healthy way to effectively prevent tooth decay. CDC has recognized water fluoridation as one of 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century.""

Nor a practical leg to stand on either, what with the "enemy government" possessing nukes, tanks, and predator drones.

Posted by: suekzoo1 | August 4, 2010 11:40 AM | Report abuse

@Liam-still: Don't be a shill for the fluoridation conspiracy. Everybody knows that it's part of a conspiracy to rob us all of our precious bodily fluids.

And it's been a long established fact that fluoridated water negatively impacts the various humours, causing various degrees of dis-ease and hysteria in various peoples. Also, fluoridation was originally started as part of a plot to create a One World Drinking System, by the Bilderberg group.

Not sure what you're talking about, converse. Nor do I know what "OT" means.

I was merely pointing out that the Second Amendment codified an existing legal right, and as such was a restriction on government. So you can be pro-Second Amendment (or whatever you'd describe Angle) while also being pro-the government is coming to get me (which definitely describes Angle).

I still can't get over that interview where she described the press as stenographers. We want them "to be friendly," to "only ask questions we want to answer," and, above all, to allow her to repeat her web site address so that people can contribute.

Vote Theocracy, vote Republican!

@sjb3: In keeping with the values of Christ is not within shouting distance, nay radio reception, from Democrats are making government a false idol contrary to the 1st commandment.

Really sbj3, you can do better to create a false equivalence than this....

To me this could mean almost anything since the Bible is rife with contradictions. Another good reason to not use it as a blueprint for legislation. Taking care of the least among us "And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." is one of the verses that is spot on, IMHO.

I also the whole prince of peace thing (which does make republican war mongering pretty unchristian), removing the log in one's own eye before trying to remove the mote in another's, and he who is without sin shall cast the first stone, but somehow republicans can only come up with the Hairy Thunderer, fire and brimstone, let's all hate gays, ban abortion (still waiting for the biblical justification for this one), and go and kill a bunch of brown skinned Muslims because we are in a holy war (isn't this a contradiction in terms with the prince of peace thing?)....

In short the bible is really like a Rorschach test, not a cookbook.

Sharron Angle is a wacko, but of course, Republicans will never admit that, and they won't allow themselves to see that part of her. They'll turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to anything and everything that's wrong about Sharron Angle just the same way they do with just about everything else.

These psychos are not fit for office.

Angle’s deluded (refudable?) comments raise some genuinely serious questions – not that she’s going to answer any serious questions.
But, given her position, it is legitimate for voters and the media to ask:

1. Do you have elderly parents or in-laws who are still alive? If yes, do they receive Social Security benefits? If yes, when do you plan to stop taking money from the idol worshippers/when do you plan to pay back every dime they’ve received from the idol worshippers/?

2. Do you have elderly parents or in-laws who are still alive? If yes, are they Medicare beneficiaries? If yes, when do you plan to stop taking money from the idol worshippers/when do you plan to pay back every dime they’ve received from the idol worshippers?

3. You and your husband are not far from retirement age. Do you swear never to access your Medicare benefits? Do you swear never to access your Social Security benefits? Do you swear never to access the Medicaid nursing home benefit?

4. Do you know how many elderly citizens (and, for the sake of Republican sensitivities, we’ll talk only about those who are U.S.-born of U.S.-born parents) reside in Nevada? Do you know how many of Nevada’s elderly citizens (see restrictive definition of same above) receive Medicare benefits? Do you know how many of Nevada’s elderly citizens (see restrictive definition of same above) receive Social Security benefits? Do you know how many of Nevada’s elderly citizens (see restrictive definition of same above) receive Medicaid nursing home benefits? Do you believe those 200,000+ Nevada citizens who receive the benefits described above are godless atheists and idol worshippers? If no, please explain.

The left sees many gods but when push comes to shove, the only god they worship appears to them in the mirror.

I might suggest people read a book: "Pakistan Between Mosque and Military"

Or you might just think of how America with separation of Church and State works relative to Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia.

Perhaps not what you might think. Here is a summery in a sentence: The Military which is the Government used Religion to allow them to govern by fighting an forever war of religion that was manufactured for that reason.
