Analyze this: ABC News clarifies Andrew Breitbart's role

Go anywhere near Andrew Breitbart and you're bound to get burned. ABC News, under fire over the news that Breitbart had been tapped to do election night commentary, clarifies his role in a statement from Andrew Morse, the executive producer of ABC News Digital:

Mr. Breitbart is not an ABC News analyst.

He is not an ABC News consultant.

He is not, in any way, affiliated with ABC News.

He is not being paid by ABC News.

He has not been asked to analyze the results of the election for ABC News.

Mr. Breitbart will not be a part of the ABC News broadcast coverage, anchored by Diane Sawyer and George Stephanopoulos. For the broadcast coverage, David Muir and Facebook's Randi Zuckerberg will contribute reaction and response gathered from the students and faculty of Arizona State University at an ABC News/Facebook town hall.

He has been invited as one of several guests, from a variety of different political persuasions, to engage with a live, studio audience that will be closely following the election results and participating in an online-only discussion and debate to be moderated by David Muir and Facebook's Randi Zuckerberg on ABCNews.com and Facebook.

ABC claims above that Breitbart "has not been asked to analyse the results of the election for ABC News." But Breitbart's Web site had announced that "Andrew Breitbart will be bringing analysis live from Arizona."

Whatever Breitbart's role, it appears ABC's political team wasn't given a heads up about it, for whatever reason. As I noted here earlier, according to a newsroom source, much of ABC's political team had been "blindsided" by the Breitbart announcenemt, and "not in a good way."

Breitbart says something different, bragging about being an "analyst" for ABC.

Breitbart is a snake.

Snakes bite, when will they ever learn.

I've heard Brietbart interviews on both Dennis Miller and fairly in depth on the Ricochet podcast. Whatever flaws the guy may have, he's not the devil.

He's thoughtful, came across as pretty smart, and not only had a good story to tell about the Sharrod incident, it seemed to hew closer to the facts that most of the liberal spin I've encountered.

I suspect this is just one of those places those of us on the right and those of you on the left with have to agree to disagree. Again.

ABC's political journalism is headed by a former chief of staff to a Democratic president. This concern for objectivity is absurdly selective and about fifteen years too late.

ABC News stepped in a squishy pile, and now they are trying desperately, it seems, to get the ooze off their shoes.

Hey Kevin, what did Breitbaby say about checking his sources before recklessly slandering a civil servant? Isn't that like rule 1 for someone attempting to be a credible person to check sources before publishing? What did he say about the totally doctored ACORN videos and his minion being arrested at Landrieu's office? Ok he is not smart enough to be the antichrist, but he is a bad joke as a "journalist" and really not much of a decent person AFAICT.

He also never published the full exerpts of the quotes he extracted from his now dead journolist expose. No one with a sintilla of decency would publish quotes and not provide the source material the quotes came from...

George Stephanopoulos was never Chief of Staff (he was Clinton's Communications Director). To be fair, Diane Sawyer was Nixon's speech writer.

I don't think the issue is Breitbart's conservative leanings. It's his overt racism and video doctoring. But whatever. It's ABC's decision to make. I wasn't planning on watching them anyways, so whatever.

But wow, 10 million people at the Stewart rally.

Diane Sawyer began her professional career in 1970 when White House Press Secretary Ron Ziegler hired her to serve in the Nixon administration. Sawyer continued through Nixon's resignation from the presidency in 1974 and worked on the Nixon-Ford transition team in 1974–1975, after which she decamped with Nixon to California and helped him write his memoirs, published in 1978. She also helped prepare Nixon for his famous set of television interviews with David Frost in 1977.

Years later, Sawyer would be suspected to be Deep Throat, the source of leaks of classified information to journalist Bob Woodward during the Watergate scandal. In 2005 Deep Throat was identified as W. Mark Felt, but prior to that, Rabbi Baruch Korff – a longtime Nixon confidant and defender known as "Nixon's rabbi" – said on his deathbed that he believed Sawyer was Deep Throat. Sawyer laughed it off, and she was one of six people to request and receive a public denial from Woodward.

In a document dated May 2, 1973, Bush's immediate superiors gave him his annual performance review for the period from May 1, 1972 to April 30, 1973. The review stated that "Lt. Bush has not been observed at this unit during the period of the report."

shrink2 and 12BarBlues,
I've been following your discussion of Healthcare funding on the old Angle thread as a background lurker. I can't say I followed each and every one of shrink's points, but that was from my own ignorance, not his. It was very interesting, just the sort of substantial discussion people say they crave. But when you limit your pearls of wisdom to dead threads, many people who might be interested don't get to see them or ask questions. Please consider injecting yourselves into the current threads in the future. All things political are related in one way or another, and I can't imagine many people caring about your jumping topic, especially on a weekend thread. It's not like you left 25 posts about the World Series. Anyway, good stuff; I enjoyed it.

I don't know about shrink, but I'll tell you my motivation about going off onto the dead thread. I don't want to argue with shrink--I want to understand his point of view. Usually that is a rather tedious process as I inch toward understanding with a series of confirmation questions. The other motivation I have is to avoid arguing with others about their preconceived conclusions about healthcare and thus, being pulled off the subject. I find arguing from a position of ignorance to be pretty much of a time waster.

Evidently you don't have any evidence that Bush was actually AWOL---they usually have court martials for such behavior. Speaking of tedious lies, when you suggest only one "disgruntled person" provided eyewitness account of Kerry's shenanigans, you must mean the one who actually served on Kerry's own swiftboat. I was including others, such as Kerry's commanding officer and the commanders of the other swiftboats who served with Kerry. Try to keep up.

I was out all day campaigning so missed the rally but I thought this metaphor by Stewart was pretty good. Apparently it's the merging at the Lincoln Tunnel going into New Jersey.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"These cars -- that’s a school teacher who thinks taxes are too high…there’s a mom with two kids who can’t think about anything else...another car, the lady’s in the NRA. She loves Oprah…An investment banker, gay, also likes Oprah…a Latino carpenter…a fundamentalist vacuum salesman…a Mormon Jay Z fan…But this is us. Everyone of the cars that you see is filled with individuals of strong belief and principles they hold dear -- often principles and beliefs in direct opposition to their fellow travelers.
And yet these millions of cars must somehow find a way to squeeze one by one into a mile-long, 30-foot wide tunnel carved underneath a mighty river…And they do it. Concession by concession. You go. Then I’ll go. You go, then I’ll go. You go, then I’ll go -- oh my god, is that an NRA sticker on your car, an Obama sticker on your car? Well, that’s OK. You go and then I’ll go…"Sure, at some point there will be a selfish jerk who zips up the shoulder and cuts in at the last minute. But that individual is rare and he is scorned, and he is not hired as an analyst.
Because we know instinctively as a people that if we are to get through the darkness and back into the light we have to work together and the truth is, there will always be darkness. And sometimes the light at the end of the tunnel isn’t the promised land. Sometimes it’s just New Jersey. But we do it anyway, together."
ps Kevin, you don't have to keep doing it for me, I figured it out. Thanks though. That's not to say that others don't still love how you're watching out for all of us.
Anyone up for that?
Just to be more fair and balanced, Diane Sawyer and George Stephanopoulos should not be paid either as both are dedicated liberals. Especially GeStep. That guy is an old Clintonista.
We don't count that though, do we??
I stand corrected on Diane Sawyer. She does not appear to be a dedicated liberal.
Sorry Diane! I didn't mean to insult you.
It appears that the Stuart-Colbert rally for liberals was every bit as WHITE as Glenn beck's rally was.
Oh the shame! The shame!
HarDeHarHar!
The Stuart-Colbert rally for liberals seems to have been a contest to see who could make up the punniest sign.
The funniest was:
"Down with shampoo"!
"Give us real poo"!
I think Stuart-Colbert pleased that guy, a lot.
They dished it out in double scoops.
Anyway, I'm glad the liberals got their day in the sun at the Stuart-Colgate rally for liberals. The conservatives have hogged all the attention, up to now.
It's best for things to be fair and balanced. Makes for more informed choices.
Frank Rich keeps plagiarizing my posts. He turns them into whole columns in order to hide the fact that he is stealing my lines.
Sorry tea baggers, your time is just about up, after your votes are tallied, don't let the GOP door hit your big behind on your way back to the trailer park.
"We hear every damned day about how fragile our community is - on the brink of catastrophe. We work together to get things done every damn day."
This is sentimental liberal nonsense, keep fear alive!
Washington Post news headline:
"SIGNIFICANT GAINS SEEN FOR GOP IN MID TERMS"
This, is news?!
I have been saying, for months, that Obama will do a Clinton to avoid becoming a Carter.
Now, it's a headline in the WaPo.
I should get paid to precast their news for them.
The recent troll infestation proves that banning doesn't work however it is probably wise not to be so rude to people day after day. That does not solve anything and it invites responses.
No one is talking about the bombs on the planes which Al Queda is getting blamed for. This is clearly another failure of Obama's terrorism policies. If one cares to remember that Obama has taken two years trying to ignore terrorism and hoping that would cause it to go away.
What is this - the 8th major terrorist incident in the past year? The New York Police Dept said that this was the 11th major "plot" which has been foiled since 9/11. Not sure what he is including in there and not including.
Quarterback has an excellent point about whether the crowd was "mostly-white" as the media tried to make that the codephrase for "racist" with the Glen Beck rally. It would be useful for readers to look at the reports about the rally to see how the papers described the crowd.
Well the Post did say this today: "Glenn Beck led a similarly vast and homogenous crowd two months agoGlenn Beck led a similarly vast and homogenous crowd two months ago"
Later in the article the Post said: "As for the diversity of the crowd - the lack of which was the source of much criticism of Beck's event - Stewart joked that it was absurd to read any motives of racism in a crowd's demographics."
And then the Post did say the crowd was "overwhelmingly white."
However no reference was made to the discussions after the Glen Beck rally that the "whiteness" of his crowd was used by the media as an indication of "racism" - while the Stewart rally was not getting the same assessment from the media - even though the make-up of the Stewart rally was the same.
It would have been more honest to reference the prior debate over the "racism" references - while mentioning that the crowds were both white.
All, Jon Ralston makes his final prediction: Harry Reid will squeak it out:
Battleground that comment was from you on the whiteness of the crowd, not Quarterback
Interesting your point on pre-casting.
Perhaps entire newspapers could develop "pre-casting the news" For instance, as soon as Obama decided to push health care and to ignore the warnings from the Massachusetts voters, Tuesday's election results could have been reported.
"He has been invited as one of several guests"
WTF? He's there to ship champagne? I don't think so. The guy is there to speak into ABC News' microphone. He's being given exposure and prominence.
This is a person who is a known liar, who is guilty of the most egregious breaches of basic journalistic standards, who supports and employs known criminals, who runs an organization whose byzantine structure seems to make sense only as a shield against prosecution.
He's a scumbag and an offense to journalism. It's appalling that ABC News has him on the air, and every journalist there is tainted by his presence.
@clawrence: "Kevin, we all know that you didn't write the blocker for anyone to block 12BarBlues (or she would be in the original code)."
Well, that's because only one person--perhaps the smartest person ever on the internet--needed to be protected from 12Bar's constant harassment. And he/she is certainly smart enough to edit the source code him/herself. Or are you skeptical about STRF's ability to edit text and follow rudimentary instructions?
BTW, latest sock puppet is added.
What the rabid left wing finds inconvenient, is that Andrew Breitbart speaks the truth, he doesn't spin. ABC News ratings have long been tanking, because the people have picked up on ABC's refusal to report in the public interest. ABC invites Breitbart on because they know he's respected, and the left have a fit, because they know they can't engage in an honest debate with him, just as with NPR's pathetic and hypocritical firing of Juan Williams for wanting to have an honest, intelligent conversation, the left is howling for Breitbart not to appear.
Not surprised Greg Sargent feels the need to attack Andrew Breitbart, he doesn't get why the Washington Post's subscription rates are way, way down.
Breitbart is a lying racist teabagger.
Not that ABC news has much credibility to lose, but they just became an outpost of Fox and I'll never watch ABC news again.
Breitbart is a bigoted,divisive,bomb throwing,hate monger and propaganda artist ,who along with Fox"news",T/Baggers and now even the pandering main stream Republicans who have poisoned our political system and government with threats of violence ,real violence and over the top bigoted,vitriolic lies, hate and the dehumanizing of all that they disagree with or deem unworthy!This hiring is just more of the Work/Welfare Program for the rightwing hacks of hate, paid for by the Chamber of Commerce,News Corp and the Wallstreet Corporate Cretins that Bankrupted America and got richer after blackmailing America for bailouts and more tax cuts for the rich!
There is no way on God's green earth that I am going to be watching ABC, no matter how they "clarify" Breitbart's role. If I want to watch a pig, I can go to a farm.
I just love the way Greg started out his original piece on the Brietbart announcement by talking about liberal bloggers and then talking about those within the ABC newsroom.
...as if there were a difference.
The idea of bringing in someone who's openly partisan, on either side, for some political commentary during major political coverage is a longtime practice for spicing things up.
But bring in a hot and influential pro-American character like Breitbart and suddenly heads start spinning among those who pine for the Soviet Union.
Ha Ha Ha.
Smear,smear,smear, Oops.
How is calling Breitbart a liar anymore honorable than what you accuse him of doing? The letter to him from ABC clearly says he was to be a panelist and the meeting was to be broadcast thru the night on the ABC news channel. The walkback from ABC only says he will not be an ABC anchor or analyst (per se.) It never says he will never be on air. Dana Loesch never said Breitbart was going to be an "ABC analyst", just that he would be bringing analysis from Arizona, which is true. If you have a problem with him being on the channel, you should pick on the people who invited him to the meeting, not Breitbart. I'm not the only one paying attention here.
Looks to me like Breitbart's short posting was perfectly accurate - not exaggerated nor misleading nor boastful.
This is an uproar entirely of ABC's making.
