Carl Paladino's Homophobic Extremism

Adam Serwer is a staff writer for The American Prospect, where he writes his own blog.

New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino has said and done a number of things that might leave voters with a negative impression. He sends around racist and pornographic emails to his friends. He threatened a New York Post reporter after the paper sent a photographer to the home of a woman Paladino fathered a child with out of wedlock. He not only opposed the proposed Islamic center near Ground Zero, he took the extreme step of promising to use government to stop its construction if elected and told a reporter Muslims were "trying to take over." Last week he bought time for a mammoth three-minute ad in which he suggests his Democratic opponent, Andrew Cuomo has had an affair, saying, "Andrew's prowess is legendary." Yes, that kind of prowess.

It's somewhat remarkable, then, that Paladino's campaign seems to be in full damage control mode over remarks he made to Hasidic Jewish leaders in Brooklyn yesterday. Paladino said that being gay is "not the example that we should be showing our children," and bragged that unlike his opponent, he didn't march in the gay pride parade this year.

"I just think my children and your children would be much better off and much more successful getting married and raising a family." I'm sure lots of gay and lesbian New Yorkers would love to get married and raise a family, but Paladino has promised to veto a marriage equality bill if elected. He also says "And I don't want them to be brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid or successful option. It isn't." Another inflammatory statement, that "there is nothing to be proud of in being a dysfunctional homosexual," was in the prepared remarks but Paladino didn't say it. Adding to the general bad taste of Paladino's remarks was the timing -- New York City was recently rocked by a number of brutal anti-gay hate crimes.

Then this morning in an interview with ABC, Paladino insisted he was "not homophobic" and backtracked somewhat, saying "I only have one problem with homosexuality and that's their desire to be married. And beyond that, I don't have a problem whatsoever." The Cuomo campaign blasted Paladino as "way out of the mainstream and is unfit to represent New York."

Paladino's candidacy is an example of what the New Republic's Jonathan Chait has described as Republicans' "tactical radicalism," the belief that "ideological extremism carries no political cost whatsoever." In New York, where gays and lesbians have political power and are rightfully seen by most residents as deserving of the same rights and respect as everyone else, Paladino's homophobic extremism has a price. But it's really only because we're talking about a state like New York -- as far as Republican leaders go, Paladino's views can hardly be described as out of the mainstream.

But it's good to see someone paying a political price for extremism and bigotry this election cycle, even if it's in a race Paladino was likely to lose anyway.

Until they can get up to 50% plus 1, homosexuals are still participating in DEVIANT sex -- it's simply the truth -- look up the definition, if you don't believe me.

My Question Of The Day Is:

Does Carl Paladino's Child, Which He Fathered By His Mistress, While He Was Married To Another Woman, Get Exposed To The Gay Lifestyle Of Carl's Nephew, Who Is Working On Carl's Campaign?

Or; As Long As Carl Keeps His Mistress and Child Away From Gay Pride Parades, Will That Make Sure That Carl's Secret Child Will Not Be "Given Gay"?

"What is it with conservatives? Seriously, I'm not trying to be partisan but it seems like if they're anti-illegal alien, they have illegal aliens working for them. If they're anti-gay, they turn out to be gay. If they're super Christian, they're a witch." —Bill Maher

Any day now pictures of Paladino and his assistant, a very young man named Topper Bottoms, engaged in naked jello wrestling will become public. Who here will be surprised?

Left-handed presidents: James A. Garfield, Herbert Hoover, Harry S. Truman, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. Since 1970, the majority of our presidents have been lefties. So whose the deviants? :p

Carl Paladino is gonna lose, BTW. In a race a less, um, obstreperous Republican could have won. Just sayin'.

If I lived in New York, I'd vote for Trump.

"If I lived in New York, I would definitely vote for Paladino."

This poster is clearly totally devoid of any Christian values. I'm a Deist and even I get that voting for an idiot who sends out emails of pics with bestiality in them is not a good thing.

I won't address the homophobic stuff or the racist stuff because the poster who said he'd vote for him is obviously not disturbed by clear examples of racism and homophobia. But then that poster is homophobic himself. And of course I haven't even addressed the mpg's of Miss France on top in conjugal knowledge.

The poster who said he would vote for Paladino shows what an ignorant buffoon he is daily. Now turn me into the blog police for saying at least be clear here...

That a "poster" who would vote for a man who has sent out racist emails, along with x rated videos including an x rated pic of a woman engaged in bestiality is by definition a BUFFOON. I STICK BY MY STATEMENT!!!!

I live in NYS and I can't friggin WAIT to vote for Andrew Cuomo.

Bigots like Paladino shouldn't even be given the time of day. He disgraces the Empire State every single time he opens his mouth.

Andrew Cuomo, on the other hand, is a dedicated public servant who as NYS AG has gone done his job well going after fraud on Wall Street.

@Kevin "In a race a less, um, obstreperous Republican could have won. Just sayin'."

Since you said "could" have won I'm in total agreement. Toss in Angle and O'Donnell and you could say those were two races the R's "should" have won where indeed they may lose.

That will be one of the biggest pundit games after election day. Just how many seats did the R's give up because of the wack jobs the teabaggers forced down R throats. Rick the scumbag Scott "may" still buy the Florida's Governor's mansion but the race for Florida's top spot would have also been favored as going to the GOP before Scott stepped in with his big bucks and the tea party jumped on board.

And I'm sure I've only touched on a few.
We've already had N.Y.'s 23rd given away to the D's because of the tea party interference...let's see how many more seats and Gubernatorial positions the tea party can blow for the R's.

During his damage control TV appearances this morning, Paladino claimed that the Jewish group wrote the statement that he read. How does he think that makes him look any better? To me it makes him look far worse, since he is claiming that he just read what some outside religious group wrote for him to say.

That sure would be no way for a CEO of a large state to operate!

Posted by: Liam-still | October 11, 2010 11:49 AM | Report abuse

I started to say, who really cares what Carl Paladino thinks about ~anything~ at this point? He's toast. And I tend to doubt that he's really seen as enough of a party leader to drag any down-ticket races down with him.

But then it occurred to me that to whatever extent Paladino's antics reinforce the perception that Republicans have been nominating candidates as extreme and unserious as, well, the candidates they have in fact been nominating for high public offices this year, he probably does deserve the ink (or pixels). So carry on.

@Liam: Love the Blues Brothers. One of my favorite movies. Blues Brothers 2000, on the other hand, was an abomination, and all the prints should be found and burned.

Regarding always being in your right mind, I suppose it depends. Remember, Ronald Reagan was a lefty, as well as Fidel Castro (is still, presumably). Joan of Arc was supposedly a lefty, Benjamin Netanyahu is a lefty, Richard Simmons is a lefty, and . . . Pat Robertson is a lefty. Also Albert Henry DeSalvo, the Boston Strangler, and they say Jack the Ripper was a lefty, but how can they know that? Jack the Ripper was never identified.

Except as David Warner in Time After Time, with Malcolm McDowell playing H.G. Wells. Love that film.

My my. Another heaping helping of trash talk from proven reliable source of same. This is right on up there with the unproven illegals scream from last week.

Imagine the nerve of this Palladino guy. He's taken a postion that is in opposition to the liberal dogma. I can hardly wait for the impotent sniveling from the left on this.

it is important to understand the POV of liberals. My theory is that they view everyone in the world, all living creatures as victims. As I learned from one liberal here last week, the greatest threat to America (any by extension all life on earth) is white men.

Homosexuals however fall into the liberals "special victims unit". This is analogous to the endangered species stupidity. Homosexuals are especially endangered because they are just so clearly the victims of whitie. Therefore no one may utter a disparaging or uncomplimentary word about them anywhere in America.

Mr Palladino has a point of view at odds with this. He stated that he didn't believe open homosexuality was good for our society. The nerve of that guy! Doesn't he know that the only crime he could have committed that was worse that this was to accidently kill a kangaroo rat?

I find his anti-homosexual proclaimations to be among his least controversial ones, by far.

The Democrat party's way of pushing the militant, homosexual agenda into the faces of normal Americans is just one reason I will vote for NO Democat, in any race, local, regional or national.

Any politician that marches in any of those public, homosexual, porno parades called "gay pride" parades will appear in my book of political pariahs.

Is that what's really worrying you Skippy and Battleground and JakeD...you're afraid your Gay? Because that's exactly what your intolerant posts suggest...your afraid if Gays could get married and have rights...well then...ohh nooo..you guys might choose to become Gay!!!! LMAO

AND....this word "homophobic" is another scare word cooked up by homophiles in their attemps to make anyone who disagrees with the radical homosexual agenda look bad.

PHOBIA means fear. Very few people actually fear homosexuals but many deem homosexuality an abnormal and less than desirable "lifestyle". The facts are on this side of the argument.

Barack Obama knows that pandering to homosexuals is a losing strategy and that is why he is tip-toeing around the subject just as he is illegal "immigration".

But even his tip-toes sound like thunder.

Liam,

Jake is so clever: he starts this thread with a definitional approach to proving that all sex between homosexuals is "deviant" -- given that homosexuals are a minority in the population, sex between them "deviates" from the norm.

But by that approach, if Jake and his wife are still having sex, they are also engaged in deviant sex, because people over the age of 70 are a small minority in our population.

People don't chose to be homosexual any more than they chose to have sickle cell anemia or schizophrenia. It is purely genetic and they shouldn't be discriminated against for something that they can't help.

I know that I did not choose to be heterosexual or left handed. It just happened to be how I naturally am, so I do not buy into the hate mongers arguments that homosexual people made a choice to be that way.

Jake chose that word "deviant" deliberately because he wanted to use it, in a pejorative manner. After I pointed out that he would then have to call left handed George W. Bush a "deviant" by his own standards, then that cretin JakeD2 went all mealy mouthed about how he was just trying to use the word in math. terms.

I think it's about time someone had the guts to say what Paladino said. Too many politicians are jumping through hoops to pacify a group that represents about 5% of the population. Years ago these people were not referenced as "gay", they were called "queer" which I think is more fitting. Are you aware that there is a movement to add homosexual relationship study to the health education children receive in public schools? Kids are confused enough growing up without homosexuality being forced upon them. I think it took a lot of courage for Paladino to say what so many of us feel, but clearly, the press and his adversary will milk this for all the mileage they can get out of it. I hope Paladino runs for president one day, he has the votes and support from everyone in my family!
