Sharron Angle's closing argument: It's us against them

Adam Serwer is a staff writer for The American Prospect, where he writes his own blog.

Greg already wrote about Sharron Angle's latest TV ad bashing Harry Reid over illegal immigration, but I'm going to post some images from all of her immigration-related spots, because they clearly establish her closing argument:

Harry Reid wants to take money away from hard-working, economically-distressed whites and give it to marauding Latino gang-bangers.

These images do more than establish her clear penchant for race-bating. They tell a very specific story to the voters Angle is trying to reach.

I've posted shots below from each of her recent immigration ads. Here's how her she portrays Latinos in her "Best Friend" spot, as they crawl across a "border fence" in plaid shirts and tank tops:

Angle 1.jpg

Meanwhile, hardworking white folks can't pay the bills:

Angle1.1.jpg

Here's how she portrays Latinos in the ad that recycled images from a similar ad from David Vitter I blogged about a few weeks ago:

illegal aliens.jpg

Contrast those images with the white, happy college students who are presumably going to get their scholarships taken away and given to unauthorized immigrants:

white college students.jpg

This is an image from the ad she released yesterday, after Angle claimed there was no racial intent to her previous ads and she was merely worried about the Canadian border:

Angle3.jpg

Who is that bandana-clad cholo coming for? A classroom full of nice white children of course:

Angle3.1.jpg

Angle's closing argument couldn't be any clearer, could it? This is Brown vs. White. Latinos are coming here to take your money, your jobs, and your kids' scholarships, and if you don't vote for Angle, Harry Reid will let them get away with it.

"Harry Reid wants to take money away from hard-working, economically-distressed whites and give it to marauding Latino gang-bangers."

Why does Harry Reid want to do that? And in an election year? What is he thinking?

And while I'm led to understand that Harry Reid voted against declaring English our national language (and while I would have voted against Harry on that, I think that ship has sailed), would Sharron Angle actually vote for English to be our national language? Has she said?

"Angle's closing argument couldn't be any clearer, could it? This is Brown vs. White."

Well, it could also be illegal immigrant vs. citizen. Another possible option.

It's us against all those who is aiding, allowing banks to committ appraisal fraud and mortgage fraud in Nevada. Why Nevada regulators allow Wells Fargo violate its own state statute? Why allow Wells Fargo abuse and defraud its own citizens.

Nevada State Statute states that it's Category C felony to make mortgage loan based on fraudulent appraisal.

Nevada State Statute states that it's Category C felony to foreclose home based on fraudulent appraisal and mortgage loan.

Man...the principal impact this advertising will have will be to motivate every Latino in Nevada to be at the polls as soon as they open on Tuesday to vote for Reid.

Nevadans also ought to consider one point very carefully before voting for Angle: they would be trading one of the most senior and influential members of the Senate for a novice widely regarded as a nut job. You want to keep federal money flowing to the state? I would consider not voting for Ms. Sharon.

Let us get clear, when the GOP/Tea Party state that they want less government, what they really mean is that they want NO government, because government will get in the way of their fraudulent schemes! They pretend they want to lower taxes for the American people all the while knowing that the loopholes they put in place for the wealthy means that Corporations and wealthy Americans pay very little taxes or No taxes at all, which means Average Americans have to carry and Shoulder all the tax burden.

The GOP/Tea Party want to reduce Social Security benefits and/or tie Social Security to the stock market. They want to reduce the benefits going to our Verterans; they want no regulation of Wall Street, banks, insurance and credit card companies; They want no spending on America's roads, streets, sewer system, infra-structure, rail roads, and public education/schools (to further "dumb-down" Americans)! They say No to any Investment in America (water, air, clean technology) and her people. They know that Investing in America means TO CREATE JOBS! On the otherhand, they don't mind Spending the millions of dollars on Wall Street stocks and bonds, phony ponzi schemes and real-estate deals, all the while America continues to further decay into a third-world country. The Simple & Awful truth, is that Republicans do not want and they Fear a government for the people and by the people. Their desire is for America to go back to the times when the rich get richer and the poor get poorer! That's what they are fighting for, not for average Americans, but for their greedy way of life and for power.

@kw: Good to see you. People were wondering where the sole sane [my opinion, your mileage may vary] conservative on this blog had gone...

"Well, it could also be illegal immigrant vs. citizen. Another possible option."

That would marginally more plausible that this wasn't hispanic bashing (but still wildly unlikely) if there were, Haitians, Iraqis, Asians, Ukrainians, Nigerians, Ethiopians as well as latinos in the images. And it is incredibly dishonest stereotyping to show teen gangbangers as typical immigrants and not the farm workers, domestics, landscapers, and construction and hotel workers that make up the vast majority of immigrants from Mexico. In fact, most of the gangbangers in the US are US citizens. Angle's statement at the hispanic student meeting that some of them looked Asian was a nonsensical as it was offensive. Why is is that all of the immigrant images in her ads are swarthy, frowning, menacing, male latino teens and not those evil Kanucks streaming over the Canadian border?

Angle is race baiting using scary looking hispanic men pure and simple. Please show any ads or other evidence that dispel this evidence or lead you to another conclusion.

"they would be trading one of the most senior and influential members of the Senate for a novice widely regarded as a nut job."

Unless they have living in a cave, it's hard to imagine that there are many undecided voters left in Nevada. The Senate trade off argument should be able to pick off some voters into the Reid camp.
If I were a Nevada voter I'd be concerned that of my two Senators, one would keep a straight jacket hanging up in the Senate cloak room, and the other guy they have

There is a pathology among the Teabagger generation that subscribes to the notion that they, and no one else deserve entitlements because that’s the way the founding fathers would have wanted it. They believe the no one other than those who are judeo-christian, mostly white, and are descendants of those original American colonists should run the country and that they are the only stewards of American values, bestowed on them by god. These Teabaggers don’t believe non-whites should be entitled to any of the government largess, if it threatens the entitlements they enjoy. They don’t believe these non-whites deserve anything because they feel these non-whites are lazy, unemployed baby factories, drug addicts, drug dealers and welfare cheats. At the very core of their belief system is white supremacy and racism. Most of the Teabaggers lived through the civil right movement where they saw a lot of their systems and institutions eroded before their eyes. Now they are being challenged again by a new paradigm with a black president, of all people. They don’t believe this black president represents their interests and only represents the interests of non-whites. They feel irrelevant in the face of what they feel is a loss of control and dominance over their privileged existence. They believe the poor should remain so and no one should do anything to help them. Even if the majority of the poor are rural whites living on welfare, the Teabaggers are willing to sacrifice these poor whites if it means non-whites will also suffer more.

Tea bag (dis)honesty:

Predictably, Paul took to Fox News to defend himself this morning. The friendly news outlet significantly downgraded the severity of the head stomping, saying the woman’s “shoulder [was] stepped on.” For his part, Paul — whose treatment of a woman during his college years has become a campaign issue — dismissed the incident as mere “jockeying back and forth,” as if the woman had also attacked the men who tackled her.

None of this matters one bit. Everyone knows what the problem is. America's SOUTERN border is an open wound. It is a festering boil seething with outlaw immigrants, drug gangs, terrorists, and just plain interlopers.

It is the focal point of an invasion so immense that it has nation shattering potential. It must be sealed and sterilized.

Also, about 90% of the illegals are Mexican and the other 10% come from south of there. The problem is clear and it's time to stop the political correctness and denial of reality.

There are not very many blond haired, blue eyed Mexicans so the dark & swarthy look of the outlaws was very accurate.

Get over it you pink cloud liberals.

"A new Pew Research survey finds enthusiasm for President Obama's reelection greater than the levels for President Clinton in 1994 and President Reagan in 1982. A majority of voters would like to see Obama run for reelection, 47% to 42%, while just 36% said in August 1982 that they wanted to see Reagan run.

Interesting observation: Clinton and Reagan both received less than 50% support in the poll and went on to be reelected by wide margins, while Presidents Carter and H.W. Bush, polled in 1978 and 1990 respectively, both received 50% or more and failed to win reelection. "

Here's the truth battleground.

Republicans don't want to give amnesty. They want to keep the illegals illegal because they loves them some cheap labor. Cheap labor that they don't have to give any benefits too.

The whole fight against amnesty is to keep them illegal, not to throw them out. Here's what's pathetic. The Republican elites got the republican activists in a frenzy thinking they are actually going to do something about all them foreigners.

So it is okay for wingnuts to curb stomp a woman because of Mexicans?

You do realize that illegal immigration is down, right? And you realize that deportation of illegal aliens is up, right? You do realize that the only way to stop (or curb) illegal immigration is by levying huge fines on those who hire illegals, and that the GOP will NEVER allow that, right? You do realize that our economy is very reliant on those same illegals you blame for everything, right?

Since the illegal immigration problem is not as bad as it was 5 or 10 years ago, why didn't the GOP do something about it when it controlled all the branches of government? It didn't because the money behind the GOP would never allow that.

Besides, the GOP loves using illegal immigration as a wedge issue to scare the bejesus out of old white folk. If they had actually dealt with the problem they would lose a wedge issue.

Illegal immigration is one of the issues that has solutions that are simple but not easy.

Step one, stem the tide of influx into America. There several things to do here. Among them: erect an effective barrier; eliminate all sanctuaries; develop and implement tools that make employing illegals very, very difficult.

Step two, escort the undesirables to the border. Among the efforts here: deportation of criminals; aggressive use of existing law to deny the ability to stay, like denying driver's licenses and most importantly, vehicle registration. The Arizona law would make a good model for this effort. If the illegals believe they are unwelcome some of them will leave.

Step three: confront the life long illegals who do not self deport. Is a path to citizenship the right choice here? Frankly I'm not sure. While I don't wish to see America deprived of solid, contributing citizens I haven't seen much coming out of DC that wasn't so full of loopholes as to rendered useless in practical application. I doubt that we can develop something that will effectively sort the wheat from the chaff. I suspect that most Americans dislike the idea because because they agree that "reform" will equal "amnesty.

Illegals take jobs from citizens. They drive down the price of labor. Given the ravages of unemployement in our cities it makes little sense to support a process that ultimately permits illegals to stay here.

finally it is important to point out that there is simply no reason why Mexico cannot have a vibrant economy of its own. Perhaps it is the socialist roots of the government. Certainly the rampant corruption in the country serves to maintain a peon/jeffe caste system. Americans should point out this fact at every occassion. When Obama brought Calderon here to scold us I was deeply offended. The thought of that man telling me how to order affairs here while his own citizens are fleeing his country for greener pastures is infuriating.

I think liberals are getting Illegals confused with Legal immigration.
Why else would they not have a problem paying healthcare, schools, etc. for people who "sneak" into our country ?
Why would anyone want to give our jobs, our money away to someone who sneaks into this country?
There aren't enough jobs as it is. And taxpayers certainly cannot afford to pay for every Illegals' education and healthcare.
