Sharron Angle ad shows Mexican border -- after she insisted her ads weren't about Latinos

Here's Sharron Angle's latest ad attacking Harry Reid over illegal immigration. It's a doozy -- it sounds the alarm about "waves of illegal aliens streaming across our border joining violent gangs." And it features the now-familiar imagery of young swarthy men looking generally menacing.

But please note in particular the momentary glimpse we're given at the three second mark of the United States Border Inspection Station at El Paso, Texas:

Here's why this is important. As you may recall, when Angle recently came under fire for another immigration ad that pictured swarthy young men sneaking around, she distanced herself from it by claiming that the men in her spot weren't necessarily Latinos.

Angle even suggested her earlier ad was a reference to border security in general, claiming: "Our northern border is where the terrorists came through."

Now that her new ad explicitly shows the Texas-Mexico border, can we assume that her earlier explanation is no longer operative?

UPDATE, 5:11 p.m.: Her new ad also shows a picture of the president of Mexico.

Which, frankly, I suspect does her more damage, especially with her base, than the original ads. She could say she's talking about illegal immigrants, not legal immigrants, etc. But if she isn't going to reinforce that she's concerned about stemming the tide from her southern border (whether this is a good idea or a bad one), she's going to lose from her base.

I just want to remind all Republican voters in Nevada to come out and vote for Sharron Angle on November 3rd.

Somehow I don't think the first cholo in the bandana is eligible for social security. I also don't think the second cholo is really all that interested in college tuition...but who am I to judge?

Election Day is actually Tuesday, November 2nd.

Wow, Hispanics in a commercial involving the Texas/Mexican border... Next, she may run a ad depicting black guys as basketball players...:) I'm disgusted!!

Posted by: CarolinaMike | October 25, 2010 5:16 PM | Report abuse

Angle misplayed this the first time when the student tried to make her look bad by admitting that when she hears the term "illegal alien" she sees a person of Hispanic descent. She now realizes, I am supposing, that back then she should have simply acknowledged the truth, which is that a plurality - at least - of undocumented immigrants are Hispanic. It should not be illegal to say that.

Angle *really* doesn't like illegal aliens, does she? (And cat girl, your comment at October 25, 2010 5:14 PM is offensive.)

Angle is right, the illegals pouring over the Nevada-Mexico border must be stopped before they take all our seasonal labor, lawn care, and restaurant jobs.

Nevada citizens are going to need EXACTLY these jobs when Angle brings her expertise on job creation to DC.

Sharron Obtuse Angle is going to have a hard time rounding up undocumented Mexicans, since she can not tell them and Asians apart.

Not only should Mexicans avoid Arizona and Nevada, but so should all Asians. Those stupid Tea Bag Candidates will deport lots of Asian people to Mexico.

@cat: "cholo" is an ethnic slur. Sorta means "mutt".

Posted by: Kevin_Willis | October 25, 2010 5:39 PM | Report abuse

Whether someone wears a bandanna, or has been arrested, or is here legally, or calls themselves a cholo does not necessarily have anything to do with their desire for tuition support.

Posted by: sbj3 | October 25, 2010 5:45 PM | Report abuse

Ummm....I'm hispanic and "cholo" is what we call latino gang members. I know....I grew up in El Paso and went to school with many of them.

And sbj, trust me.....Angle didn't put that image of the hispanic male with a bandana wrapped around his head to scare people into thinking he was going to be taking their child's place at UCLA. THAT's what's really offensive so spare me the pearl clutching.

A query (& I'm a bit abashed to say I'm not sure):

Can the political ads funded by groups like the one Greg cited down-blog, specifically mention the candidate opposed, or the candidate supported?

Or can they only be "issue" ads with no reference to candidates at all.

I think they're mentioning names on radio ads, but I'm not paying alot of attention.

The Mexicans have cleverly disguised that border to look like southern Arizona.

Just wait until somebody tells Sharron Angle that "Nevada" is Spanish. Maybe she can change the state's name to "Snowy."

A warning of what Senator Harry Reid has in store for us, if he is reelected? An AMNESTY--for 13 to 20 million illegal aliens, with a price tag of 2.6 Trillion dollars to process each individual and subsidize their welfare programs, according to the Heritage Foundation. They send approximately $60 billion annually out of the country to their families, plus an estimate $113 billion dollars at the local level of government for public benefits. Harry Reid voted to continuously fund Sanctuary cities and States, so did Senator Barbara Boxer of California. Harry Reid and the majority of democrats crashed American-English as the recognized language of this country, and voted for illegal aliens to participate in our wilting Social Security System. Senator Reid, Boxer and the largest proportion of Lib-Democrats voted equally, to what top Democrats wanted every time. This is sheer madness when his Nevada has the largest proportion of jobless Americans, the highest rate of bankruptcies and home foreclosures.

He must have turned senile when he states that there are no illegal aliens in Nevada, which is currently slipping into insolvency. In the last ten years Dem-Libs have failed to complete the real paired fence along the length of the border with Mexico, but sued Arizona for trying to defend its citizens from overflow of monetary illegal aliens, criminals and even foreign grown terrorists. Senator Reid, along with Barbara Boxer challenged E-Verify, the local policing law 287 (G) yet pushing to award tuition to children of illegal aliens for a college and state universities education, when American students cannot even afford the escalating fees. GOOGLE--"On the issues" website, and then decide your voting preference. In addition GOOGLE—illegal alien costs. I'm a Tea Party Blogger, Independent voter and will be watchful of organizations canvassers’ similar to ACORN, which registered illegal aliens to vote, as well as deceased people and even fictitious people living in vacant lots. GOOGLE--Voter fraud, it's a crime against US citizens and naturalized Americans. Incidentally Tea Party people do not genuflect to either party and are strongly opposed to either ideologies.

@Kevin: from your wiki article

"Despite, or because of, its long history of denigrating semantics, the term Cholo was turned on its head and used as a symbol of pride in the context of the ethnic power movements of the 1960s."

Just a couple examples of popular, mainstream usage of the term:

Nevada used to be part of Mexico

The general thinking that even if they do not want to overturn the results of the war, they do want to CLAIM their rights to live in the territories which Mexico lost in the Mexican War.

That includes California, Arizona, New Mexico, parts of Colorado and maybe Texas too.

Sounds about right - they are claiming those rights.

The democratic party really is not doing too much to stop them.

IRONICALLY, it was the democrats who TOOK THAT LAND FROM MEXICO in the first place - in the form of James K. Polk. But let's not get crazy here. Polk really wasn't concerned about immigration restrictions at the time.

The vast majority of the Invaders aka ILLEGAL Aliens,,, ARE latinos.
So what's the point here?
I think Angle trying to placate the little rug rats - & their (mostly) law breaking parents was ridiculous.
Racist?... "latino" is Not a race. Just a job stealing, increasingly violent criminal enterprise that's feeding off the soft under-belly of the usa.
Vote Angle. Deport ILLEGALS no matter where they're from.

It doesn't matter one bit. Everybody knows our southern border is the real problem. It is broken and is the focal point of an illegal invasion of nation destroying magnitude.

Let's all be honest now and admit it.

The U.S.-Mexican border is a disaster. 99% of the invading illegals are Mexican. The other 1% comes from south of Mexico

To allude to any other scenario would be a flat out lie. Get used to it.

It's got to be fixed and AMNESTY is not gonna happen.

Posted by: battleground51 | October 26, 2010 6:50 AM | Report abuse

Somebody mentioned that immigration was reformed in the 1980s when Ronald Reagan was president. That's true but he was cooperating with a liberal congress. The AMNESTY reform was a total failure.

Immigration reform was done in the 1960s, also, and with another liberal congress and Ted Kennedy at the helm.

Immigration has been done to death and we do not need more of the same.

We have liberal, immigration laws and the outlaw immigrants are still crying for more.

They just hate obeying American law.

That's the real problem.
