Sharron Angle: My ads aren't referring to Mexico, except when they clearly are

As you may have heard, Sharron Angle is now claiming that her new ad which attacks Harry Reid with images of menacing young Latino men isn't really referring to Latinos.

As Jon Ralston reports, Angle has now explained away the ad by claiming that people are "misinterpreting" the imagery. "I'm not sure that those are Latinos in that commercial," she said, adding that the ad was referring to border security in general: "Our northern border is where the terrorists came through."

But here's what's funny about this: Angle's campaign makes direct references to Mexico in a previous ad and in a previous campaign mailer which both blast Reid on immigration in precisely the same terms the new ad does.

Here's the previous TV spot, which claims that "Harry Reid sides with Mexico on immigration":

AngleMexico1.JPG

And here's an Angle campaign mailer that literally features Harry Reid holding a map of Mexico in his left hand, with the word "amnesty" printed on it:

AngleMexico2.JPG

Ralston has previously documented Angle's almost "pathological" belief that she can rewrite history to her heart's content. She has, to an astonishing extent at this point, repeatedly exercised her First Amendment right to claim that she hasn't said things that she plainly did say.

So chalk this one up as Angle's latest effort to bail out her campaign with what she might call First Amendment remedies.

Greg Sargent:

What's your definition of "clearly"? The NEW AD is different than the OLD ADS, duh.

Does anyone know how Sharron Angle is polling with hispanics? How much of the Hispanic vote does she need to win? She seems pretty twitchy about whether or not she means "Mexico", so my guess is that she may think she has a problem there (meaning in the hispanic vote).

Yes, Sharron Angle will be sure to guard Nevada's long, porous border with . . . California.

Posted by: bearclaw1 | October 18, 2010 5:17 PM | Report abuse

Yes, that's right, Jake. The new ad that happens to contain pictures of Latino men, and hence got the campaign in trouble, is not a reference to Mexican illegal immigration -- even though it's the latest line in a string of advertising that, unlike the new one, does contain direct references to it.

Or something.

Sharon Angle says they look Asian to her.

Technically she is correct. Mexicans as a whole have a great deal of Native American blood, in relation to the amount of European blood.

The Native Americans are believed to have traveled to American from Asia, via a landbridge, or via boats along the coast.

So Sharon Angel is correct. Again. She is right that Harry Reid should be sent back to Searchlight, NV. But he won't go. Harry Reid will become a highly paid lobbyist, so don't cry for him.

The record will also show that Sharron Angle never said the words: "My ads aren't referring to Mexico, except when they clearly are" or "My new ad which attacks Harry Reid with images of menacing young Latino men isn't really referring to Latinos." In Hollywood, what Greg Sargent did above is call "artistic license".

It's not even the lies that get me.

It's not even the fact that some people are gullible and taken in by the lies.

What gets me is the number of people who know that she is obviously crazy but are willing to ignore that reality.

She may as well drop the pretense and say:

"VOTE FOR ME, I'M A CRAZY LIAR"

"WE NEED MORE DELUSIONAL LUNATICS IN THE SENATE"

Right? What's preventing her from running openly on her ability to lie? Because that's basically what she is doing right now just without the "I'm a liar" slogan.

Evan Bayh is sitting on $10 Million Dollars

Apparently Evan Bayh still has 10 million in his campaign accounts. He gave a little bit to the Indiana State party for local races, but the bulk of the money he is hanging onto.

Evan Bayh is about to challenge Obama for the Democratic nomination. Obama is going to get a challenge from the center.

Interesting. Bayh might actually appeal to Iowa voters more than the urban Chicago Obama. The democratic primary is wide open. If Bayh makes his plans known by the spring, Hillary has a decision to make. To run, or wait. If Hillary waits, there is little chance she can jump in later like the candidates used to do decades ago.

What Angle technically did or did not say is irrelevant. The fundamental problem non-conservatives always make is they take literally the comments from the far right. So when Rand Paul complains that a new ad attacks his religion, for example, everybody debates whether it does or not while overlooking the fact that all he wants is to shift focus to the ad, and away from his behavior. Ditto Joe Miller in Alaska, Sharron Angle in Nevada, Christine O'Donnell in Delaware, Carl Paladino in New York, etc.

Angle doesn't care if you demonstrate that she's fast and loose with reality. Her supporters don't care, either. If you believe in the liberal media conspiracy, then all this nitpicking and factchecking is, at best, irrelevant. We have to somehow break this vicious cycle of mindless paranoia that has gripped the electorate.

Ok, it appears that 16-17% of Nevada's likely voters are Hispanic. Angle carries about 32% of Hispanics, and Reid carries 61%. Another cross tab shows that more than 70% of Hispanic likely voters(in Nevada)support a pathway to legalization for illegals.

Does that explain why Mrs. Angle would want to protect her hispanic vote, in a razor thin vote?

Video: Joe Miller's guards strong-arm the press

-New clip shows private security blocking journalists from covering "arrest" of Alaska Dispatch's Tony Hopfinger-

New video has emerged of the Sunday incident in which Alaska journalist Tony Hopfinger was detained by private security guards working for GOP Senate candidate and Tea Partier Joe Miller.

The video was taken by a reporter with the Anchorage Daily News. In it, Miller's guards, who work for a company called Dropzone and seem to be doing their best Secret Service impression, try to make ADN reporter Richard Mauer leave as he interviews Hopfinger. The town hall event was open to the public and was held in a public school.

Says one of the guards, "If you don't leave right now, I'm gonna put you in handcuffs too."

Mexico actually wants to end the immigration laws in the US, as they presently apply to Mexicans.

Both the present President of Mexico and the previous President, Fox of Mexico would prefer "open borders."

Which means that all Mexicans can come to the US for work and settle here, with nothing more than a birth certificate from Mexico.

The people of Mexico believe that the Mexican War, and the subsequent border adjustments should at least give them the right to live in Texas, Arizona, California, New Mexico and Nevada.

Interesting set of proposals, just open the border. The other proposal is to ship them all back, and to pass a Constitutional Amendment which would clarify the 14th Amendment to exclude anchor babies.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-10-17/more-cash-blots-out-sunlight-in-u-s-elections-albert-hunt.html

"A prediction: The U.S. is due for a huge scandal involving big money, bribery and politicians. Not the small fry that dominates the ethics fights in Washington; really big stuff; think Watergate.

It is axiomatic in politics that without accountability there is abuse. This year, there is a massive infusion of special-interest money into U.S. politics that is secret, not reported. Corporations and other interests will spend more than $250 million of undisclosed funds to affect the outcome of the Nov. 2 national elections.

One of the villains is Citizens United, a sweeping Supreme Court decision last January that gave the green light for the use of corporate and union funds to try to sway elections.

Chief Justice John Roberts’ five-member Supreme Court majority argued that massive amounts of special-interest cash don’t create an appearance of corruption; none of these five jurists ever faced a voter.

A former justice who did, Sandra Day O’Connor, was dumbstruck by the Citizens United case, cracking, “I step away for a couple years and there’s no telling what’s going to happen.” '

But it will get even more interesting when Joe Miller designs the wall for the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and then walls for Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, as part of the 5500 mile wall between Canada and the lower 48.

@12bar: She's not the sharpest tool in the shed.

We should not forget Reid's famous, "I can't understand why any Hispanic would vote for a Republican," line:

"What Harry and other pandering politicians fail to realize is that Hispanic-Americans are Americans first. They worry about crime, the economy, taxes, and national security — all the same things their neighbors worry about.

"The idea that the Hispanic vote hinges on one issue — immigration — is the most ridiculous and patronizing notion. Sadly, Reid isn’t the only politician guilty of this gross generalization. Nothing is more infuriating to me than the way the media and political parties conflate Hispanic-Americans and illegal immigrants. We are not one and the same, and our interests and priorities are often very different.

"... My advice to Republicans: Stop worrying about the “Hispanic” vote. Focus on being true to your party platform, because the party that can deliver economic opportunity along with traditional family values will prevail with Hispanics — and most other Americans."

That should read, "With all respect due Hispanic-American voters." (Coz those are the people you're dissin'.)

"Of course, there is not 100% hispanic support for a path to legalization. That much is true."

There's not even close to 90% Democratic support for a path to legalization!

If we could first get serious about securing our borders, and then work on fixing immigration, after all that *then* we could probably get close to 80% agreement on a path to legalization.

BREAKING NEWS

The democrats never stop coming up with new ways to pass the money among themselves.

From the Chicago Tribune

Chicago is known as a place where sometimes the dead vote. But they can also make political donations.

The political committee of former Cook County Democratic chairman George Dunne recently made $10,000 in political donations even though he died in 2006.

Dunne's campaign fund has $54,156 left in the bank and his treasurer can still spend it. He gave $5,000 each to Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan on Friday.

@sbj,

I have read the Pew report before. It is answering a different question, don't you think? The question that appears to be answered is "how would immigration reform rank in their concerns."

The Nevada polling asks the Hispanic voters whether or not they support a path to legalization. It seems that some 60%+ do, if you believe the polls.

BTW, I have great deal of respect for Pew's hispanic reports and reference them quite a bit.

Why can't Pew and the Nevada polls be correct?

You responded to that specific quote with this bit of misdirectiobn:

"With all respect to National Review, I can't help but notice this:

"Nevad Hispanic support of path to legalization = mid 60%"

Now, how does your response make any sense at all unless you were disagreeing with the NR quote?

Or, how far the graying and whiting of America has progressed.

Posted by: ceflynline | October 18, 2010 10:17 PM | Report abuse

@sbj,

I'm not refuting NR. They can say that hispanics don't have much concern for immigration issues (that referenced the Pew report which indicates that in ranking concerns, hispanics place immigration as fifth (an intensity question)). NR could have done what I did, and look at the fact that, according to Pew, 65% of Hispanics lean democrat. NR could have looked at polls in the hispanic states (meaning the five states with the largest hispanic population) and wondered how it all reconciles. Maybe they would have written a different article, one that incorporates all the conflicting data.

Current Nevada polls which say hispanics are 60% + going for Reid and more than that support a path to legalization. Those are TWO BIG DOTS. I don't think it takes too much to draw a line between those two dots. Even Pew has 65% of hispanics leaning Democratic. Why do you think they are doing that? Is it education, jobs or healthcare (the top three concerns)?

No one is making you believe the polls (except for Pew) if that's what you want to do. If you want to believe some poll, but not others, that's your choice.

Have you gone to pollster.com? That will take you to Huffington, who merged with pollster. Look at the Nevada Senate race graph. At the bottom of that graph are listed the public polls. If you click on the individual poll, it will take you to the crosstabs. I did see some polling by age and minority status (actually Hispanic). You just didn't look at enough of them.

Rasmussen doesn't make crosstabs available unless you are a subscriber. Sometimes, the cross tabs are throughout the document if the poll is a multi-poll race.
