Beck responds to Post review

I was flattered to learn that Glenn Beck read my review of his new book "The Overton Window" and even took time to remark upon it during his morning radio show. But I wish he had read the review a little more carefully because he refers to things in it that weren't there.

Most serious among his off-the-cuff language this morning was: "The Washington Post writes as future fact that [the book] will be found in a bag of ammunition at some point after a violent shooting." Please read the review again, Mr. Beck.

Here's what I actually wrote, as a conditional statement -- not as a future fact: "If the book is found tucked into the ammo boxes of self-proclaimed patriots and recited at "tea party" assemblies, then Beck will have achieved his goal." And where is the mention of a violent shooting?

Mr. Levingston,

If it makes you feel any better, the majority of the populous already knows that Beck is a distorted ignorant human being himself.

Many of us have learned this over the last year or so, when he decided to switch over to the distorted ignorant Fox news organizations.

I know it's your reputation that you are worried about, but if I were you, I would try to rise above the ignorance. After all, arguing with Glenn Beck or any other ignorant extremist Tea Bagger is like arguing with a snake. You know the kind? The kind that strikes at anything and every thing that approaches it, including it's own shadow, even though it knows it has no fangs.

Good Luck

"where is the mention of a violent shooting?" Why, it's right there in your final paragraph! You're being falsely disingenuous in this retort. Your review was a knee-jerk putdown, and you should stand by it.

You tar him with the "ammo boxes" line up front, and your only other mention of ammunition is in the penultimate para where you say "their insistence on nonviolence" is "disingenous"! And that's before piling on with the idiotic Turner Diaries / McVeigh reference.... There's quite a difference between that book (advocating violent overthrow of constitutional rule) and Beck's book, where his heroes actually defend the constitution with thoroughly legal means against an extraconstitutional plot. Or is that too complex a distinction for you?

Keep writing, but try using both hands on the keyboard, not just the left. Your dwindling readership might learn something...

While GBeck did not cause the rapid decline of Amerikan political discourse, he certainly celebrates it. The fact is that the book numbers are driven by GBeck's imbedded audience, those gummers who live for the vitriol and could care less about difficult analysis or uncomfortable truth. If half of them go fanboy and buy the book, he has a best seller, despite the book content. Most of GBeck's core audience would buy a collection of scribble shopping lists if GBeck touted it on the air.

GBeck is the rightful heir to PT Barnum. World without end. Amen

Its a consumer market, so buyer beware. If they're shallow enough to look to Beck, who is an entertainer, for the answers to the country's problems then what else do you expect but for them to drool over everything he says?

Yeah, yeah, government spending... a week or so ago a report came out about the debt, and attributed the majority of it to the wars. Don't hear any of you denouncing the wasteful spending there. You're just like everyone else - cut government spending, except where YOU want. Ask yourself why you never see a politician speak at a senior center and say that he/she supports raising premiums or cutting benefits? Seniors generally are very concerned about the debt, but ask them to cut into their pocket, and out the door goes fiscal responsibility. Intolerance for wasteful spending ends when your wallet is affected. The teabaggers will learn that when they try to get re-elected. Something tells me bragging about how LITTLE money you got for your district is going to get you nowhere.

And give up this "liberal media" thing. Whine, whine, whine.... There hasn't been a positive story on Obama in God knows how long.

By the way, your hero Reagan quadrupled the national debt in 8 years, and raised taxes several times. My Goldwater parents are still whining about it.

Livingston, Beck was closer with his assertion to what you wrote, than you were.

Why would you mention that his book could be found "tucked into the ammo boxes of self-proclaimed patriots and recited at "tea party" assemblies,..."

AMMO BOXES? So you are stereotyping all people who are patriots and are tea party members as having ammo boxes?

I don't own a gun and neither do a lot of people who attend tea parties. We are regular Americans who are tired of our government's outlandish spending, passing bills that a majority of Americans don't want, with legislative manueverings that are plain underhanded and without debate.

The Cap & Trade is going to see our wealth transferred to the Global Elite thru the IMF with that Carbon Offset ruse.

Maybe you like being ripped off by Obama and the Democrats. You're the fool, Livingston, not the Tea Party members.

It's a shame that we have to suffer along with those foolish enough to vote for Obama. It's sad that you can't fix stupid.

Beck is an actor. He acts for money, much like Al Pacino. He doesn't believe half of the garbage that comes out of his mouth.

The reason he will sell books is because he is entertaining. Simple as that. Heck, Hitler wrote a best seller.

The whole media thing these days is so predictable. Just like a bookie or a sports book. They want equal numbers on both sides and it guarantees their survival. This is why reality TV is so popular

You Lefties are sooo superior to the rest of the citizenry, you know, those who still believe in GOD, and those who believe in the CONSTITUTION. You have all the answers and you know so much more the the rest of us, you know the 'GREAT UNWASHED'.

However, there's something that I don't understand. If Glenn Beck is such an idiot and loser, then how come he's making it so well in the free marketplace. Last time I checked, his ratings are much better than that big blowhard's, you know the ED SHOW.

The reason that you Lefties can't compete is that you have so much hatred and jealousy in your hearts, that you can't see past the end of your noses.

The free marketplace will determine the success or failure of this book. And the Elections this November will determine the success or failure of the incumbent Democrats who are running for office.

Then you Lefties can blame everyone but yourselves. That's the way you always do it, isn't it?

Given that the whole point of the review was to insinuate that this "dangerous" book would be the pretext for violence, your quibble over the wording is more than a bit disingenuous.

I wonder if those of you who have trumpeted the fact that Beck's book debuted at #2 on the best seller's list are aware of just how this works in the right-wing echo chamber. Right-wing organizations like Dick Armey's Freedom Works buy thousands of copies of the book and then give them away to their astro-turf organizations like some of the Tea Parties. These huge orders hype the numbers, but say nothing about how many individuals are really willing to shell out their own money for the book.

Surely the reviewer did not mean that the book was intended to be read while munching crackers and waiting for the target to arrive? If the reviewer was so touchy or nitpicking, he should have been more careful with his words.

OK, Steven, how about these quotes from the original review:

"...the rebelliousness it incites among anti-government extremists."

"...risks falling into the tradition of other anti-government novels such as "The Turner Diaries" by William L. Pierce, which became a handbook of extremists and inspired Timothy McVeigh to blow up the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City in 1995."

Jesus Bicycle Riding Christ, Steven, could you possibly be more disingenuous? I mean, when you relate Beck's book to the Oklahoma City bombing and then whine about being taken out of context with regard to a "violent shooting" you're not fooling anyone but yourself.

Please read your review again, Mr. Levinston.

Mr. Beck seems to be spot on.

Perhaps that's not what meant to say, but it's clear that's what you wrote.

The prior sentance reads "The success of Glenn Beck's novel, "The Overton Window," will be measured ... by the rebelliousness it incites among anti-government extremists."
Then you end by trying to tie his book to the 1995 Oklahoma City bombimg.

Next time, mean what you write, write what you mean! Perhaps you need a second chance to explain the "danger" of this book.

Re: "Most of these Beckian goobers don't read books"
Isn't that a ridiculous statement considering that his books are bestsellers, at the TOP of the lists?
If "Beckian goobers" aren't reading them, then who, may I ask, is?
