New jobless claims up, economic recovery in serious doubt -- or worse

By Frank Ahrens

Unemployment is in this country is going the wrong way.

On Thursday morning, the Labor Department said that new jobless claims filed last week unexpectedly rose by 12,000 to hit 500,000, the first time since November that the half-million mark has been reached. The four-week moving average of new unemployment claims, which smooths out week-to-week volatility, rose by 8,000 to 482,500. Forecasters expected last week's new jobless claims number to go down, not up.

President Obama used the bad jobs data to urge Congress to restart the stalled small business jobs bill that he said would help small businesses with tax cuts and expense write-offs, and would help small banks lend to small businesses.

Obama noted that in the last few months of 2009, businesses with fewer than 50 employees accounted for 60 percent of the job losses in the U.S.

We know how the markets reacted to today's jobless claims number: straight down. All three major indexes are trading down more than 1.5 percent.

Everyone is familiar with the monthly national unemployment rate, which comes out on the first Friday of each month and now stands at 9.5 percent, according to the July numbers, the most recent available. That number gives us a monthly, detailed, deep look into unemployment in the U.S.

But the new weekly jobless claims number, which is released each Thursday by the Labor Department, gives us a faster, week-by-week snapshot of unemployment. And the picture is getting increasingly ugly.

The latest number marked the third straight week of increase in new weekly jobless claims. That suggests that employers not only are not hiring, it suggests that they're starting to lay off workers again, and that will start a whole cascade of problems for the U.S. economy and the politicians in Washington who face reelection this November.

To be sure, the number of new weekly jobless claims is well down from its March 2009 peak, when 650,000 Americans were filing for unemployment each week. But the number had been steadily decreasing until three weeks ago. Now, it's headed back up.

And here's the really troubling part: Economists say that real, lasting job creation in this country will not happen until the new weekly jobless claims number gets down into the low 400,000s or upper 300,000s. The weekly claims number got down to about 450,000 but then remained stubbornly stuck, refusing to go any lower.

That left employers -- real businesses that give real people real jobs -- in a pickle. The number was still uncomfortably high, but if it had kept going down, employers would have believed in the momentum of an economic recovery and would have hired up for future growth. But it didn't. It stagnated. And so businesses didn't hire new people. Now, it looks like they're starting to lay off workers again.

The overall unemployment rate of 9.5 percent is down from its recent high of 10.1 percent, hit last October. But understand that a number of factors go into calculating the jobless number that have very little with how many people are going back to work. For instance, if lots of unemployed workers stop looking for work, they are not counted as being unemployed -- oddly -- so lots of people checking out of the labor force can actually bring down the unemployment rate. But they remain a burden on the system and have all the problems of the unemployed.

Politically, the new jobless claims number is bad news for incumbents, be they Republicans or Democrats. Private-sector employers are not hiring. That leaves only the government. And people want the government to do something.

But unless the government wants to explode the already steadily increasing national debt and budget deficit, it's pretty much out of bullets. Indeed, there's a real "what do we do now?" feeling pervading Washington. Why? Because after two years of massive government stimulus programs -- the big $800 billion stimulus, the cash-for-clunkers program, the home-buyer tax credits and on and on -- the economic recovery is firmly stalled.

The overall unemployment number refuses to drop appreciably. GDP for the remainder of the year likely will head downward. After a terrific one-year recovery run, the stock markets peaked in April and have been roller-coastering downward since. The best possible forecast for this recovery is a stalled recovery. The worst-case scenario is much darker: a second Great Depression.

The stalled recovery puts the Bush tax cuts -- which expire at the end of the year -- increasingly in the news. The president wants to extend the tax cuts except for the wealthiest Americans -- households making more than $250,000. But the truth is, the wealthiest Americans are those who are best-equipped to create new jobs. But that's a politically unpopular thing to say with unemployment near 10 percent. So you see the conundrum.

There will be a lot of pressure on the person Obama picks to replace Christina Romer as his economic adviser. Their No. 1 task will be creating jobs.

Well, so much for the much-hyped "Summer of Recovery." But count on the President to try to spin this one as not necessarily bad news -- that his imaginary recovery continues, yada-yada.

Of course Dems clearly have no intention of running on their record (they don't dare) --- so why not keep on blaming Bush? That time/attention spent on health care, police conduct in Cambridge, state law in Arizona, a mosque in NYC, and all the rest can now be seen as absolute and tone-deaf lunacy, as the President is about to emphatically find out.

I think the pundits are low-balling November and that it may well turn out to be an unprecedented bloodbath. Can the President then move to the center? Pretty clear that's not in his DNA or his history. The next two years will be very interesting.

Congress has failed. They need to pass S3706 and extend tier 5.
Every person that is unemployed or cares about the unemployed should be signing this.

http://uspoverty.change.org/petitions/view/the_99ers_need_a_tier_v_added_to_unemployment_benefits

I am not one of the unemployed however see the need for Unemployment extensions… The fact that Congress cannot find other cuts is unacceptable; they always go after what is needed the most and save their pet projects and Wall Street friends.

Congress needs to be held accountable for the their failure to create a jobs bill and a jobs market. Extending Unemployment is not the answer however it what is needed now.
The Answer is to create jobs, which will take Congress placing higher taxes on any company that out sources jobs over seas, higher taxes on any funds leaving the US and higher tariffs on imports. Until then we have to pay out unemployment for the failure of our leaders.

Support unemployment here, it is one of Change.org highest all time petitions.

The average american who does not have enough money to pay for health expenses,
vacations, school expenses, going out to eat etc....just tightens their belt and does without and makes the best with what they do not have.
It is time the government does the same.
The meetings, the travel, the going out to eat,. They do not have money to contribute or take care of other people,
We can barely take care of ourselves. It is time we bring home our soldiers and take care of our borders. We were always told we are sending our men over to the other country so they would not fight on our soil. We are now at war on our soil,
drugs, poverty, guns, and kidnapping only to mention a few. We do not have to worry about people that want to live here but do not want to live by our rules and laws. I do not want to change america to be like their country. I want them to change to be Americans. Let Germany, England, France, to mention a few countries, take care of themselves and bring our soldiers home to take care of our borders and us. There are too many cooks in the kitchen and nothing is getting cooked. We donot have to supplement Cuba's health insurance.
Just take care of us. When John Kennedy became president the rumbling was that he was going to bring the Pope into our government. That did not happen. Mr. President you may be Muslin but we have seperation of church and state. It is to bad that you could not keep that seperation. The killing of the 3000 americans from all walks of life were killed by muslins terrorist. Mr. president you want to instergate the american people, all faiths and nationalities. You are a tumble maker.
I voted for you because I wanted to give you a chance to make things better. You have made things worse.

These north ends of south bound mules are going to cause more unemployment with their new 1099 reporting requirements. The hidden bill is aimed at the very people that the government clowns in charge say are the people to help us out of the economic downturn! Good thinking! ...I also like the way the cowards hid that item till the health bill passed. That and the lies of needing 16,500 new IRS employees for the health program prove we are dealing with an evil and deceptive government willing to do most anything to get their agenda (communist/socialist...call it whatever) passed.

As long as our government continues the reckless spending and unprecedented meddling with businesses, we cannot expect real long term growth.

The Congress and current Administration have put the country on a course of reckless government spending that has mortgaged the future of all Americans especially future generations. The only way to fix this long term structural problem is to create a pro-growth atmosphere for business. To do this we must reduce taxes NOW. How many different taxes does a business or individual pay on a regular basis? We must eliminate number and complexity of all these taxes and reduce the tax burden.

We also need to end the micro-management of business and the economy. Until we GREATLY reduce the tax burden on business and consumers and remove the senseless regulations that accomplish little in relation to the cost they impose, our future is bleak.

REMEMBER IN November...VOTE THEM OUT!!!

The Democrat Recession

When Pelosi / Reid / Obama took over Congress in Jan 2007, after 12 years of Republican prosperity, unemployment was at 4%, DOW was at a record high, we had had 54 straight months of economic growth.

The recession started in late 2007, nearly A YEAR AFTER the Democrat Congress took power, with the DOW is down 40% from when Pelosi/Reid/Obama took over The Republican Congress had 4 budget surplus years, and left in 2006, with the DOW at a record high, unemployment sub 4%, deficits were moderate and trending down, and after 52 straight months of economic growth.

100% of the recession, 100% of the stock market drop, 100% of skyrocketing unemployment, 100% of the bailouts, the crash of the Frank/Dodd financial system, a 40% growth in Govt spending, and $3.8 Trillion of new deficit debt, the worst environmental disaster in US history belongs to THIS DEMOCRAT CONGRESS.

Republican Congress average annual Deficit: $105 billion (1996-2007)
Democrat congress average annual Deficit: $1.305 TRILLION (2008-2010)

TWELVE LONG YEARS OF RECORD PROSPERITY with the Republican Congress,
THREE YEARS OF FAILURE, MISERY, FISCAL INSANITY, ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER, AND RUIN UNDER Pelosi/Reid/Obama...

Repealing the health care bill would be an excellent start. When small businesses can see that they need not fear their own government, then, and only then, will they begin hiring.

Sadly we are screwed.

The economic debacle for the U.S. is nothing new. This is an overall plan that has been in the making for the decades preceding. Government and corporations are behind this and have been for a long time irrespective whether you're democrat or republican. Notice how both have been in a free-for-all when it comes to pensions/retirement/personal healthcare. They're making sure they take care of themselves because dealing with this huge baby-boomer population is far too much to handle. Dumb down Americans and make them grovel...eventually they'll be competing for the wages of China/India and be glad to make the meager $ just to survive (CONTROL).

I saw the Small Business brief speech.
President Obama is correct. It's tied up in Senate again and the party of NO is saying NO. They do not want to address it until after the elections. We don't have that amount of time for arguing all over again.

It also means that there must be an extension of unemployment benefits. One cannot deny it. Senate waits till after the election, the benefits will have to be extended another 3 months. And the Senate better not him and haw about extending benefits, when their hesitation to pass the Small Business bill is the major reason for the train wreck to come November 28th.

Double talk constantly, attack the very people (small business) that you are supposedly relying on to create jobs. Legislate to raise illegal alien counts and H1B visas and other programs to take Americans jobs. Outsource jobs to India and around the world and allow pregnant aliens to come here for the purpose of birthing a baby on American soil to get life long benefits of American citizenship. Go Obama!

Unemployment is the result of the GOP's desire to govern but not to be governed. This is to say that the GOP advocates no taxation and insignificant government except those government functions they like such as war and grants to big business. On the other hand they want government to control women's reproductive health, Christian prayer in public schools, teaching of Evolution, gay suppression, and a return to Traditional Values as in Plessy and Dred Scott. The U.S. economy was given a hard kick in the shin by wealthy Republicans who lobbied to get government off the backs of financial services businesses. They got their wish and killed the economy by perpetrating massive numbers of frauds in the housing mortgage markets. This brought down the GSEs Fannie and Freddie. This brought down well-established New York City banks, stock brokerage firms, and AIG. (Uncle Sam reanimated their dead flesh.) This brought down the U.S. auto industry with the help of clueless but well-compensated auto industry executives. The UAW helped. Government spending to compensate for a severe recession is in accordance with Keynesian economic theory and the charter of the Federal Reserve. The GOP opposes government interference of any sort at any time in economic affairs. Blame Democrats as you will. Adult supervision of those whose business it is to buy and sell money and related valuables was and continues to be necessary. Lobbyists should have been ignored. The greedy and feckless should be in Federal Prison.

Companies are not hiring because the insurance companies have upped their premiums. Insurance companies are fighting HCR by raising premiums. And ma and pops, LLC, and even INCs don't wish to pay the higher premiums for their employees, so they lay off or just don't hire. TEMPS are probably the only quantified population that are getting jobs. But it pays low.

The benefits of HCR are already being seen on pre-existing conditions (insurance companies don't like it-raise premiums)...on the 26years olds staying on parents' policies (insurance companies hate it, raise premiums)...the health ins. exchange (insurance companies have to compete now more heavily than ever, and of course, hate it).

Insurance companies lobbied the Senate not to pass it. Lobbying by giving perks like cruises, cars, vacations.
And now, insurance companies are "hurt" and mad, so they take revenge by raising your and your companie's premiums.

Boy it must have hurt the Obama's WaPo Army to have to deal with this news!

But bravely fighting the odds, Ahrens managed to quickly turn the blame indirectly to a [Republican-by-implication] Congress for a "stalled" jobs bill (as if anyone with even one business class realizes that that isn't going to do anything to help the economy).

Then we get the Democratic "well at least it's not as bad as it used to be", as if hey that punch in the gut isn't as bad as the kick in the groin". Yes we wallow in the sweetness of "mollified pain."

No fear though... we'll just jump over any detailed mention of Obama's failings to address this over "buy or die" health care and a spanky-spanky to the same business community as is the ONLY ones who can really create jobs, and go to THEM BUSH TAX KUTS.. yup THAT'S the next real focus on the depressing economy.

Anyway, great article, I feel the pain and anguish of having to squeeze out this "why isn't the economy doing well? why why why??? We're DEMOCRATS!" and sobbing softly in a pillow.

No, joblessness is not one bit funny. But the deflections of the WaPo Obama army are.

Bad policies by Bush do not have anything to do with new bad policies by Obama and the mob in DC. If you think 'unemployment' knows and gives a darn in the difference between Democrat and Republican your mistaken. The reason Obama was elected was to 'IMPROVE' things, not make them worse with kneejerk legislation, half thought out ideas and stealing from the working man to support the career unemployed and illegal aliens. I feel sorry for the Mexicans that don't have the guts to fight in their own country to take back their government from their crooks. But this is America and Americans should come first.

At $50,000 a week, I can’t wait to see the photos of the proud HIS and HER Usurper basking in the sun at taxpayer’s expense. Here are the marching orders for those of us who care to save our American republic:

1. Put Obama, Moochelle, Pelosi, Reid, and their sycophants on a permanent vacation. (Don't rule out incarceration.)

2. Hold your local officials, union bosses and religious leaders accountable.

3. Get sober before you vote again.

4. Put Islam, the race extortionists, and the gay caballeros on hold for the moment. (Kind of like the FAA instructions to place the oxygen mask on your face before attempting to help your children.)

5. Get active! Now is the time for all good men and women to come to the aid of their country.

6. Gather information while you still can, because censorship is coming.

7. Love your children and teach them that the truth can no longer be found in the media.

8. Don't be intimidated. We must hold our ground.

9. Be kind to your neighbors. We are under attack by our government and many people are suffering. We need to help each other get through this difficult time. Like WWII, victory is not assured.

10. Pray to your God, if you have one. Even if you don't believe in God, dedicate your life to defending our Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

We're not "The Greatest Generation," but this is our moment to be patriots.

What is more than in doubt is the "recovery" imagined by many optimists that would simply return the economy to the way it was in 2007. It has been obvious for a while that this kind of "recovery" was very unlikely. Today's stock market decline is part of the process of accepting that reality and pricing it in. But, both the prospects for the real economy and the prospects for the stock market remain very uncertain. Clearly, expectations about how to play stocks to profit from an economic cycle are not likely to work. Otherwise, it is very hard to know what to expect either from the evolution of the global economy or the reactions of stock markets to that evolution.

Kind of a misleading headline.. and the facts behind the numbers, as well as the actual numbers, are cooked. First off, there were more than 500,000 *NEW** claims for unemployment last week. Somewhere between 80 and 90 percent of those jobs "lost" were OUTSOURCED or they were US workers displaced by one of the thousands of Indian job shops opening in this country.

Now, while free trade is a catastrophe and utterly insane, those Indian job shops should be a special irritant. These are Indian owned companies that setup business here, taking advantage of small business loans and grants, the vast bulk of the money appropriated by Congress for small business growth. Those shops hire only Indian nationals, here on H1-B visas (and visitor and educational visas where they cannot get those), displace US workers in competing businesses, and direct work to India. China is, in turn, copying this, and the result will be higher and higher job loss numbers while the Administration touts nonsense like "more hi-tech jobs created" (and this is true, so long as you are an Indian or Chinese national, just not true if you are an American).

The whole free trade schemes, the service based economy, our trade agreements, job and factory outsourcing, those "green jobs", are fantasies or purposeful untruths designed to spin the disaster our "representatives" got us into. The WTO is a creation of ours, just as are the "Asian Tigers" that will not survive the looming economic collapse of this country or, if we choose to survive, the end of free trade, our participation in the WTO, our abrogating any and all trade agreements, our abruptly ending guest worker visas and taxpayer supports of foreign businesses, our bringing back tariff wall to either cause the return of outsourced jobs or spark the emergence of new US owner businesses that will supply the goods and services that 80% of our economy depends upon.

To quote Mr. Ahrens: "Politically, today's new jobless claims number is bad news for incumbents, be they Republicans or Democrats."
Last time I looked, it was the Democrats who have been in charge, and as much as they would like to continue blaming Bush and Republicans for the $800 billion "stimulus" debacle and the multi-trillion deficit, its getting old. So... why--if they have tried to hold the line on Obama & Company's reckless restructuring of the economy--should Republicans worry? Fiscally conservative incumbents--most of them Republican--don't have anything to fear.

This is highest number of people applying for unemployment since November.
Under Obama's guidance, the economy is regressing.

It's not suprising.
Obama has a dogmatic left wing agenda that he is determined to shove down the collective throat of America whether we like or not and all of his policies are job-killers.

The man has no idea whatsoever how to run the economy.
His Stimulous Bill which he claimed if passed would prevent unemployment from reaching 8% was just a one trillion dollar givaway for the Democrats to all their favorite projects and friends.

That figure of 500,000 and the 9.5 unemployment rate is just the tip of the ice berg.
The real unemployment rate of people no longer elligible for unemployment and who have simly given up looking for work in this Omama economy is somewhere between 17-20%.
That's ONE FIFTH of the US workforce!

Obama and the Democrats are stunningly out-of-touch with the American people and with reality.

what milbrooks27 said
"if we choose to survive, the end of free trade, our participation in the WTO, our abrogating any and all trade agreements, our abruptly ending guest worker visas and taxpayer supports of foreign businesses, our bringing back tariff wall to either cause the return of outsourced jobs or spark the emergence of new US owner businesses that will supply the goods and services that 80% of our economy depends upon."

As the U.S. population balloons,* its ability to "create jobs" or retain jobs cannot keep pace.

So many people wants to blame Obama for the current mess that we're in. Don't they realized are 20 years of republican domination has turn thsi country into indenture servants - we are mostly slaves to debt and the growing divide between rich and poor is growing wider.

Posted by: TheBabeNemo
===========================================

Why aren;t you asking why we need this bill in the first place? After all of the things that Obama has claimed he has done to spur growth and curb unemployment, why do we need yet another bill?

There is an old saying, by just throwing money at a problem wont make it go away. That is all Obama has done. He doesn't really know what to do, so he just keeps throwing money at it in hopes it magaically goes away!

Liberals should be as furious and mad as the republicans for why we need to keep spending money for problems that we were told we going to be fixed long ago.

The stupid Democrats haven't a clue how to get us out of this mess!

Has it occurred to anyone yet that one of the factors contributing to increasing unemployment claims is the mustering-out of soldiers coming home from Iraq?

Numbers like these need a little deeper analysis to make them useful. It's simple and easy to take a number and use it as a political bludgeon, but it's not really very useful.

It's also foolish to forget that Congress and the President have relatively limited ability to influence unemployment, especially when filibusters prevent them from doing direct hiring, WPA-style.

Big business has lots of money, and isn't hiring. Small business has relatively little money, and isn't hiring. This is a structural recession, unlike anything thhis country's seen since the Great Depression, and 41 Senators are dedicated to defending the status quo that created the problem.

Blame the President and the whole of Congress if you like, but, if nothing gets done in Washington, nothing gets better. The Republicans need to relearn the word "compromise," and to practice it, or we will continue to get nothing done, and it will continue to be their fault.

Anonymous | August 19, 2010 3:26 PM - True. And I have a good job, too. I could move off to Europe tomorrow with the certain knowledge that I land a job before I left here. A lot of bright people could. Ultimately, though, it's just that some us are more concerned about the future of the country than we are with the thickness of our wallet. The United States is a world treasure and is worth saving. If you blowhard Neocon's or your look-alike Democratic allies succeed in suckering this country into continuing your free trade con game, however, it WILL fail and people like me WILL end up being forced to leave it because greedy scum like you succeeded in so fouling your nest that the choice is between living in a cesspool or exile. Your phony rewrite of history pretty much proves that you don't have any solution to the mess you created, either. This depression began in 2007, under Bush. It was largely sparked by the Bush tax cuts. Job and factory outsourcing were already out of control problems and unemployment futures didn't look good. Real income was falling, too. The Bush tax cuts were designed to stimulate job and income growth. Instead, virtually 100% of that money went toward offshore business growth, accelerating job outsourcing and disposable income decreases to the extent that it led directly to the mortgage meltdown, the bank and Wall Street failures, the BUSH and REPUBLICAN and OBAMA and DEMOCRAT bailouts, TRAP, and all of the other schemes used in a whole series of (ongoing) insane attempts to keep the free trade beast fed. They are all to blame! All of our elected representatives, the appointees, think tanks, corporations, board members, executives, traders, ALL OF THEM are to blame and they will either come to their senses and end free trade and accept the minor consequences of a "trade war" or they will preside over the complete destruction of this country and likely become the fathers of World War III.

Either way, your biased attitude is not constructive to our country. If you only wish to see Republicans fail it is even worse, and just shows how liberals act stupidly.

I think your story of punching a republican in the face is just that, a story. Liberals are usually gay non-violent types. So the fact that you broke someone's nose is laughable.

I think the story goes down more like this: A reublican got in your face about laughing at him, so you ran, got into your prius and went straight home to your apt in Dupont, told your boyfriend what happened, and cried while drinking a non-fat latte!

Liberals are amazing. They claim they are the only ones trying to save our country then spew stories such as the one told by "lookatthem". What a f'ing retard!

To celebrate this Obama is going for 10 days to Martha's Vineyard (we are not going there this year); I guess his wife needs a rest after a week's vacation in Spain and their trip to Florida for a photo op of the great leader in a bay behind the gulf. Let's see if one million assumptions are correct the deficit will only be 1.3 trillion dollars next year. Did Bush ever have a deficit like this. No, this is thanks to the crooks in the Democratically controlled Congress and Obama. His machine can try to spin the economy, the numbers and the jobless rate any way they want to; but, he has forgotten that many of us out here do have an education and a brain that works. His backyard meeting in Ohio yesterday was farcical with his handpicked and adoring audience. Sorry Charlie, it just does not work.

One voice with credibility, Douglas Elmendorf says deficit remains sky-high because of the recession battered tax revenue, while the $862 billion Obama bailout stimulus and a string of Democrat appropriation bills boosted spending. To coin a Musical phrase:
"Wake up everybody"
This is not a right/left issue.
This is about being responsible and accountable to the American people and not to Wall Street and the cooperations.
All you folks who want your country back were strangely quiet during Bushes eight years when he was spending like a drunken sailor off the boat. And if YOU had to absorb what Obama did...what WOULD you do?
Like any addication....it takes time to recover. It took 8 years to get here before Obama took office. It's going to take time to get out of this mess. While I agree...too much spending by Obama may not be the answer...but I don't have an immediate solution or magic wand...NO ONE DOES!
So if you want your country back..do something at your level. Walk and clean your highways, tutor the child who needs help, don't waste food or money. Stay "truthfully informed" and vote for the person and not the party.
We are all arm chair quarterbacks with no knowledge of the game...It's easy to complain and finger point, especially when you saw a runaawy train 8 years ago and stood silent. You wanna be mad at somebody..look in the mirror! Had you stood up then...maybe we wouldn't be here.

TheBabeNemo - I'm trying to figure out if you're an idiot or so much of a true believer that no amount of facing reality will change how you think. Look, Obama;s "small business" initiatives have largely funded small Indian job shops in this country that DO NOT hire US workers. Instead, the bring in Indian nationals as "guest workers", usually on the H1-B or L-1 visas. Their net effect, to date, has been to displace US workers, especially hi-tech workers and to funnel work to larger companies in India. This has not gone unnoticed by China and they are engaged in the same schemes. Last weeks job losses include at least 150,000 US DBA's and computer programmers who lost their jobs as a direct result of Obama's "small business" initiatives. Can't you understand that these programs are DETRIMENTAL to the economy, not an assistance? Please, for god's sake, check your facts before writing nonsense. Obama and his Democratic allies are every but as much a disaster as Bush and his Neocon's.

Posted by: mibrooks27 | August 19, 2010 4:51 PM | Report abuse

We did the cash infusion stimulus in 2009. Clearly, the 500,000 PER MONTH jobs losses of Bush / 2008 were put to a stop.

Now it is time to realize the full damage of those years. 15 million remain unemployed. Trying to cut off their stipends in service to an already exploded deficit, is not the right move for emergency times. The right step here is to keep them supported, with FDR-style public works jobs.

Community policing to reduce crime. Elder home care, child care - both are underserved and have positive social and economic impact. Badly needed infrastructure improvements. Many unemployed would be happy to give half a day to these roles as they wait for reintegration into the private sector.

Which is obviously going to take years. The solution isn't hard. Morons in Washington and a Media Inc. largely beholdened to the far right, are what is in the way.

Isn't it odd how the FDR solution isn't even on the table? Think Hoover Dam was a bad idea?

I can only imagine how bad it would be if it were not for him. We should all feel blessed that he is in control and doing all of these great things. We can only hope for 4 more years of his leadership.

Take a stand. Buy an American made product of value. A Ford Truck perhaps. Use the services of a local trademan (sorry for the gender slip).

I have and will continue to do so. Guess what, I am a Republican. I pay my taxes, I serve my community, volunteer at the high school (inner city - math tutor).

The economy is 'stalled'. It is in a terrible 'lull'. The key issue is velocity of money. What do you do to revive the velocity? Well, normally you may wish to just print a trillion or so and give it to the people. Unfortunately, they will spend it on imported crap. No money changes hands except through middlemen.

How do you get someone to start spending their own money? Get the person who was laid off last year a job. A real job. Not a government make-work program (census taker). You do this and people will start to feel better about the economy. How do we create the jobs??? Easy, provide incentives to business to increase their production, their ability to innovate, etc. We need to do this immediately.

The small business owner is looking at 2011 and sees the following:

1. Increased income taxes (not incorporated and the business revenues are well above $250K)
2. Increase health care costs (either through the forced contribution to the feds or through commercial insurance which is offsetting the additional 18 M people getting Medicaid....which underpays health care providers who then jack up commercial rates).
3. Increase regulatory costs - take the recent financial regulations that will force most small businesses to spend additional money on infrastructure. The Japanese nor the Koreans nor the Chinese have these costs!!!)

So, the small business owner decides NOT to invest in personnel, rather tries to decrease the size of their labor force to reduce their fixed costs.

This is not rocket science.

Get the SEIU storm troopers to demand that the FED loosen up some of the credit to business owners. They can not get ANY type of short term loans whatsoever.

So, come back with something reasonable other than a graft-filled, payola package (stimulus II) that did nothing but fill the pockets of the entities that fought for Obama in 2008.

Sorry, Billie. Indiana has a surplus. The economy is going strong. Yes, we were a very slight blue state in the last election but the state is controlled by the Republicans. Indiana is a beacon of light compared to OH, MI (freaking disaster), IL (is any politician going to escape indictment).

Why are IN tax dollars being spent to prop up states that are in default (or close to it)? Why can't WA, CA, NY, IL get their own acts together without asking the Feds to bankroll their ridiculously lavish public pension programs. Come on Billy, can't your own state get your act together????

After nineteen months, nothing. Not even a glimmer of hope for the tens of millions of unemployed. Something is very, very wrong. There is no end to this in the foreseeable future, which contains nothing but uncertainty and drift.

These numbers exemplify the fascist/reactionary Republican view of the world and the conspiracy among the greedy "capitalists" to not spend money and bring down the first African American president in our history. The Obama Administration must act. Business is sitting on two trillion dollars worth of excess profits, those need to be seized by government and used to put people back to work. If business complains, nationalize and put their leaders in prison for crimes against the American people. It is clear Republicans are engineering this downturn to seize control in an "election" where African Americans and other minorities will be prevented from voting therefore it is within Obama's constitutional prerogatives to cancel the election until he is certain that everyone is allowed a say in how government works.

The Best thing for OBAMA to do now is to REVERSE or DELAY the Health Bill/Plan.

It is an Anti-Recovery bill, scaring the business owners and increasing the expenses, and expanding the governemnt/IRS related institutions/cost

you are arguing the Microsoft story, that's all.

That Gates' Microsoft (which is not a small business) hires only Indians because they are smarter in technology.

oh, and BTW, thanks for insult.

There is also, a bill already signed into law for Small Businesses. I'll get you the title from whitehouse.gov. Small businesses still need help. Just like unemployed people still need help.

It is time to act right now, in my opinion, there must be a combination of fiscal stimulus, low interest rate, public investment, industrial policy, trade deficit reduction and tax havens closure as a way out of this nightmare

a.- The defense budget must be greatly reduced, and expend this money in infrastructures that acts as “economic multipliers”, for example= why not to build some nuclear power plants to have less energy imports, and have an advantage in production costs associated to the energy costs?. Also the green energy should be help in the research and development phase to get a real competitive energy prices

b.- The interest rates should be maintained low in the next years, as an incentive to the investment, and also to avoid the nightmare a high interest rate could pose to the people with variable interest mortgage that can give the keys of their houses to the banks in millions, and then wrecking havoc to the now damaged financial system

c.- There must have an industrial policy, helping new factories that produce jobs, and installing a “fair” trade policy, more than a “free” trade policy. USA cannot compete with an authoritarian state that maintains slavery labor conditions to his workers and no environmental constrains to the factories. This way of life in those countries are not sustainable in the long term, but before it collapses they could destroy all the industrial base of the western countries, now very depleted (except Germany of course). Also the technology and know-how provide by the public universities and research centers should be not allowed to be sent oversea to give an advantage to others countries that do not invest in this kind of things

d.- The tax cut for the rich must finish, also prosecute much hardly the black economy and tax havens where a huge amount of money is lost. The tax havens are really an scandal in this time, and nobody seems interested in close them

Those are some things to start to change the course

Recovery 101 – Have we seen much bang for the bucks spent in expectation of stimulating the US economy? The answer is No!
The only solution to really get the economy going and create jobs is to offer a residential mortgage interest tax credit, governed by the same higher income phase out rules as the current mortgage interest tax deduction. A credit rather than just a deduction will cause money to pour money into the US housing market and create jobs for real economic growth. The cost to taxpayers for such a program would be far less than the already spent stimulus money and spur the US economy enough to pay for itself. Without such a solution, we may continue to stagnate as we have for the last year and a half.
