Reviewing video, YouTube style

Sara Goo

I was watching the latest video from one of my favorite YouTube producers, HappySlip and came across a clip from another guy claiming to be the "YT reviewer." [YT = YouTube for the uninitiated] He goes just by "James" under the screen name thecruelworld, and produces slick, Siskel & Ebert-style reviews of popular YouTube video producers. According to his bio, 40-year-old James has only been a YouTube member himself for a month, but he's definitely onto something.

As I wrote a few weeks ago, online video search is still in a state of infancy and it's a pain to find any specific video you're looking for, especially on YouTube. What we need is a director (or directors) to help those of us who don't have hours upon hours to scan the site for the best picks. YouTube staff puts its own selection on the home page, but why should we rely on just their opinion? (Whoever is in charge of that operation is enormously powerful, I might add.)

James seems to have a deep knowledge of video editing and production and he offers lots of helpful hints to the world of amateur video producers out there. Although he's kind of geeky and I certainly don't agree with his review of my other fav, LisaNova, it's a fun way to introduce new online video producers to viewers who quickly want to get to the best of the amateur video producers.

James kicks ass. His reviews are spot on, his editing and delivery are professional and then some. His reviews are a great way to cut through all the YT spoodge!

I work with James and is as much fun to work with as he is to watch. To those who are "reviewed" by James, listen to what he has to say. He know's what he's talking about.

James is fantastic. I thought of Siskel and Ebert when I heard the first words out of his mouth about a month ago. And I was their biggest fan. He is definitely going places if he catches a lucky break.
