Google Wants You to Think Before You Drink and Send

Mike Musgrove

Google's e-mail service Gmail just introduced an unusual new feature, called "Mail Goggles," designed to help keep people from sending emails that they'll later regret.

That's right, the new email feature is an effort to help keep people from emailing after they've had a drink or two too many. Turn this new widget on and Gmail will make you perform a few simple math problems, within a short time limit, before you can hit "send" on that outgoing e-mail. When activated, the service acts as your e-mail traffic cop on Friday and Saturday nights between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m.

If it were earlier in the year, I'd kind of think this was one of Google's famous April Fool's jokes.

To read more about the service, check out the Gmail team's blog entry about Mail Goggles.

To turn this feature on, look under your Gmail account's "settings" button, then click on the "labs" option and scroll down the page.

(In these depressing economic times, maybe Google might want to expand the default settings, too.)

So, anybody going to take Google up on this new feature?

Google Wants You to Think Before You Drink and Send ??? Once again, we're asked "Can I be responsible for my actions? and a booming voice comes back: NO. My question is this: Why don't they want us to think Before We Drink and SPEND? You know, since they're so concerned.

Awesome! I love, love, love widgets and this is one of the most creative in the field, I have to say. Hilarious and somewhat practical, too.

Drink and Sending? In a drama-free relationship for a few years now...so no use for it, unfortunately.

Maybe I'll pick a fight with a good friend just to give it a whirl...
