Google Ends Ad Deal With Yahoo

Google said it is pulling out of its proposed advertising partnership with Yahoo as it became apparent the deal would face a drawn-out antitrust challenge from the U.S. Justice Department.

Google said in a blog post today that, "after four months of review, including discussions of various possible changes to the agreement, it's clear that government regulators and some advertisers continue to have concerns about the agreement."

"Pressing ahead risked not only a protracted legal battle but also damage to relationships with valued partners. That wouldn't have been in the long term interests of Google or our users, so we have decided to end the agreement."

The deal was first announced in June and would have allowed Google to sell some online ads displayed alongside search results on Yahoo's site.

Yahoo, which has struggled to compete with Google's search business, saw the partnership as a way to boost its revenue after rejecting Microsoft's takeover bid earlier this year. Microsoft had vocally protested the Google-Yahoo partnership, saying it would allow the No. 1 and No. 2 search players to form a monopoly.
