Alzheimer's disease is an absolutely horrible disease that robs the family of their loved one long before their actual passing. This week, my husband of 30 years died from this awful illness; several times he was found outside, trying to find his way home. We were just incredibly fortunate that he didn't make it beyond the driveway before a watchful neighbor saw him. Even when placed in an assisted living center, the wandering was still an all-too-present risk. My father died of the same illness, and his wandering caused a great deal of stress and anxiety in the family, praying each time for his safe return while combing the streets trying to find him. As stated, until a person has to deal with a loved one with this illness, they have absolutely no concept of how difficult it is.

Wandering is a common behaviour among Alzheimer's patients. The Alzheimer Society of Canada estimates that 60% of people with Alzheimer's will wander at least once. Patients in even the most secure facility can wander. If they're not found within 24 hours, their chances of survival are slim.
Unfortunately, few families know about this symptom of Alzheimer's until they have to deal with it themselves. It can be the most stressful part of caring for a loved one with dementia.
