Searching the World
The vast majority of our obits originate from families who contact us, but that's not always the case. We keep an eye on the newswires and Internet newsgroups where people who like obits congregate, we all have sources in various communities who alert us when someone notable has died, and we look in other publications in case the wire services miss an interesting person.
That's how I came across ...
...Su-Lin Young, an explorer from the 1930s who trekked into southwest China, the same area where the devastating earthquake struck last week. Both the San Francisco Chronicle and the Contra Costa Times did good work on Mrs. Young. (It reminds me of finding an absolute gem in the New Orleans Times-Picayune, an obit of Irvan Perez, which I shamelessly jumped on and wrote for Washington Post readers. )
