The Voice of Nixon
The death of Mark Felt, aka Deep Throat, last week, took me to a website that has both audio and transcribed recordings from Richard M. Nixon's presidential office. No matter how often I've read these words, hearing the actual voices of H.R. Haldeman and Nixon still chills.
"We know what's left and we know what's leaked and we know who the leak is... Mark Felt."
"Now why the hell would he do that?"
The University of Virginia's Miller Center for Public Affairs has done a public service by going through all the recordings from six administrations and making them easily available to the public.
We also were (finally) able to link to some of the archives that we on the obit desk use routinely and it's pretty cool to see the actual newspaper clipping from that era. The link got lost in the story because our website's automated links, but here is a readable visual of what Bob Woodward has identified as the most important story of the Watergate investigation.
