Phillies Announcer Harry Kalas
Harry Kalas, the longtime voice of the Philadelphia Phillies on TV and radio stations in Philadelphia, collapsed today at Nationals Park in Washington and died at George Washington University Hospital. He was 73.
Kalas was known for his clipped, laconic style, in which each word seemed to be turned over two or three times in his mouth before reaching the microphone. He was a great storyteller, had a great fund of knowledge about baseball, had a wonderful common touch and could be very funny, as you'll see from the homemade video below, with questions from the audience.
He was known for coining the home run call of "Outta here!," and his call of Mike Schmidt's 500th home run for the Phillies has entered sportscasting lore: "Swing and a long drive, there it is, number 500! The career 500th home run for Michael Jack Schmidt!"
Last year, he covered one of the Phillies' greatest seasons ever, culminating in their World Series championship against the Tampa Bay Rays.
