Calling Santa Claus

Patricia Sullivan

Joe Holley's fine piece about the White House phone engineer this morning immediately reminded me of an obit I'd written last year about the woman who had been in charge of the White House switchboard for years, Mary Burns.

In it, I told the story about how she could get Santa on the line for a young Caroline Kennedy. Joe says the family of James Gordon was amazed to read the piece, because they realized the anonymous employee who played Santa Claus was their own father.

I knew I had read the White House Santa vignette somewhere - thanks for the reminder.
