'Angela's Ashes' Author Frank McCourt Dies at 78

Frank McCourt, the Irish-American author of the acclaimed memoir, "Angela's Ashes," has died at age 78. Read The Post's obituary by Matt Schudel here.

McCourt was in his mid-60s when he published "Angela's Ashes" in 1996, and it became a huge bestseller and an instant classic of the modern memoir.

He recounted his hard-luck Irish childhood, which was beset by horrific poverty, the deaths of three children in his family and the sorrows of drink. Yet, through it all, McCourt showed a resilient spirit and triumphed over the misery of his surroundings. His memoir is laced with wit, humor and deep human understanding and has touched and inspired millions of readers.

The value of McCourt's recollections lie in his capacity to show Ireland as it actually is, rather than through the misty-eyed American naivety and his genuine warmth. The former talent lends credibility, while the latter imparts compassion.

I was a student of his, during his last year of teaching at Stuyvesant. He was an excellent teacher. He once played a record of the Clancy brothers in class & I liked it & I had never heard such music. I remember that he lent me the record so I could listen to it at home.
