Her MTA song returns
Bess Lomax Hawes, a folklorist who contributed much to this country's cultural preservation and who died Nov. 27, did not like being best known for a little ditty she co-wrote with a friend. But the song turned into a hit, and there you have it -- The M.T.A song, which subway commuters the world round know.
This is the hit version, from the Kingston Trio; I can't find a video of the original Almanac Singers in which she sang it with Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger.
