Gary Coleman dies at 42

Matt Schudel

Actor Gary Coleman, the child star of "Diff'rent Strokes," died Friday at 42. Mr. Coleman had suffered a brain hemorrhage after falling at his home in Utah on Wednesday. He was hospitalized in Provo, Utah, but went into a coma and was placed on life support.

Mr. Coleman was the lovable, wisecracking star of "Diff'rent Strokes," which ran from 1978 to 1986, but had many personal, medical and financial struggles since then. He had courtroom battles with his parents and others, as his life descended into a tabloid disaster.

He was plagued by a congenital kidney condition that stunted his growth, never growing beyond a diminutive 4-feet-8, and was forever plagued by the limits of his childhood success.
