The Daily Goodbye

Vince O'Brien, 91, best known as the Shell Answer Man in advertisements for the oil company, died June 19. Mr. O'Brien was a character actor who appeared regularly on the television series "Law and Order" and who memorably played a hotel doctor in Woody Allen's classic movie "Annie Hall."

John Ferrugio, 84, who was credited with saving 170 lives of passengers when he led the 1970 evacuation of Pan Am Flight 93, died June 19 of organ failure in Milton, Mass.

Mr. Ferrugio was the in-flight director for the flight, which was en route from Amsterdam to New York when it was taken over by two hijackers. A third hijacker boarded with dynamite in Beirut and then the plane took off for Egypt.

The Boston Globe's fine obituary recounts how Mr. Ferrugio told the flight attendants, " 'Now hear this and hear it good. When this plane comes to a complete stop . . . don't wait for me, don't wait for the captain, and don't wait for Jesus Christ. We are going to evacuate this plane, like right now.' ''

Upon landing in Cairo, the passengers and crew flooded out of the plane, escaping just before the plane exploded on the tarmac,
