Elizabeth Edwards dies at 61

By Matt Schudel

Elizabeth Edwards, the estranged wife of former U.S. senator (D-N.C.) and vice presidential nominee John Edwards, has died at the age of 61 at her home in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Mrs. Edwards had breast cancer, which had metastisized to other organs. She was a lawyer and author as well as a partner in her husband 2008 short-lived run for the Democratic presidenital nomination. In 2004, John Edwars was the vice presidential running mate of Democratic nominee John Kerry.

When John Edwards's infidelity became known in 2008 -- and he later acknowledged an illigetimate daughter -- Elizabeth Edwards did not stand by her husband, like so many other political wives. They soon separated, and Mrs. Edwards set out to live her own life.

A full obituary will be posted soon

I think we can safely say Mrs. Edwards had the worst year. Now shes having the best year with our father in eternity.

Safe to respectfully say this woman was a tough old girl in the best tradition of the Democratic party. Jackie Kennedy and Hillary Clinton come to mind along with Elanor Roosevelt and Bess Truman. A truely exclusive club indeed. We often forget the women who make us who we become! I'm sure there are those who qualify from the right as well!!!

It is indeed a sad news but I am glad she did not have to go through prolonged suffering. My condolences to her family and friends. I admired and respected her. She was a very likable person.

Maybe it would be more appropriate to have this subject discussed in a blog not entitled, "Post Mortem." I would hope the WP would have a little more sensitivity.

May God be with the Edwards family and may her children be protected from all harm. God Bless!

If reputed witch Elizabeth is "spending her best year with our father in eternity," [LOL] I'm sure John thinks, "She's welcome to it!"

Now, maybe he can get the comfort and physical care he deserves from a genuine, understanding love interest.

Elizabeth Edwards is an example of class. OK she wasn't perfect, but who is? She didn't slam her husband in public after his misdeeds became known; she went her own way. Here's hoping John Edwards realizes what he missed.
