Any Democrats Left in Washington?
To those Democratic National Committee workers stuck here in the nation’s capital, Denver is to Washington what the playing field is to the locker room. Or so it would seem.
The action appears to be out West. Since I’m also in D.C., it seemed only fitting to find out what the folks who didn’t make the cut are up to.
My first call to DNC headquarters reached a volunteer in the press office who was answering phones because all the paid flaks were at the convention. He referred me to one, whom I reached in Denver on the second try, and he in turn put me in touch with DNC spokesman Brad Woodhouse.
I had it all wrong.
True, most of the DNC finance staff is at the convention. “We have a fairly robust fundraising operation going on out here, as you can imagine,” Woodhouse said. But a large team is in Washington conducting opposition research, he said, and another group of DNC staffers is tracking John McCain’s campaign appearances as part of a “truth squad.”
“The Republicans have a war room out here in Denver,” Woodhouse said, “so we’re in Washington putting together a war room for their convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul that will be bigger and better than theirs,” he declared.
There’s action close to home after all.
