Has He Lost His Mind?

“Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's big speech on Thursday night will be delivered from an elaborate columned stage resembling a miniature Greek temple.

The stage, similar to structures used for rock concerts, has been set up at the 50-yard-line, the midpoint of Invesco Field, the stadium where the Denver Broncos' National Football League team plays.

Some 80,000 supporters will see Obama appear from between plywood columns painted off-white, reminiscent of Washington's Capitol building or even the White House, to accept the party's nomination for president.

He will stride out to a raised platform to a podium that can be raised from beneath the floor.”

Jacques-Louis David, Napoleon Crowning Himself Emperor Before the Pope, 1805. (Louvre)

The Berlin folly -- in English.

The Superbowl Halftime Show -- without the game.

What's the finish? Maybe Obama’s got Zhang Yimou to do the hidden-rope trick, and have him lifted, Beijing-style, to the heavens when he’s done. Will he reappear three days later at the Bird’s Nest?

Or maybe he'll just do a Napoleon and coronate himself. By the time Napoleon made himself emperor, he had won the Battles of Lodi, of Arcole, of Rivoli, of the Pyramids and of Marengo. And had promugulated the Napoleonic Code. He had yet to write a single autobiography.

Why is Krauthammer even published in this paper at all? He is blindly partisan and not interested in facts or analysis. He just throws rocks and makes stuff up. Seriously, the guy is a waste of space.

That's right Mr. Krauthammer - Obama is participating in a big event both parties throw every four years called a CONVENTION.

President Bush's last convention was held in Madison Square Garden, often referred to as the "most famous arena in the world," and home to the Knicks, Rangers, and concerts by the likes of Madonna, the Who, Pearl Jam, etc.

I think the Superbowl is stupid, but I still watch it. I watched the Democrats convention last time, expecting the same, and was surprised by a speech by a fella named Obama.

Kurt,

In case you haven't noticed, WaPo has slowly become a neocon newspaper with it's beating the war drums for the Iraq invasion, uncritical news coverage and analysis of the Bush administration -- and in fact, being a cheerleader for the administration all too often, and running such god awful neocon columnists as Kathleen Parker and Krauthammer.

It's laughable that the wingnuts continue their screed that WaPo is a "librul" newspaper when, in fact, it is anything but "librul" anymore.

I agree with Charles Krauthammer. I find all this celebrity worship a little creepy--especially the image of Obama standing above thousands of cheering Germans in Berlin as they hail him...that's really scary on one level and really insulting on another.

One has to nod in agreement with Krauthammer. It's not hard to see, it's front and center stage. Indeed, the cult of celebrity [Hillary, Bill & Obama] continues at the Democratic National Convention this week. This is a critical time when Barack Obama should be underplaying the "leader as messiah" message and get down to the brass tacks of policy with a detailed plan for America's faltering economy. Now, we hear that Obama is to take stage in front of 80,000 screaming fans. Not a good sign. Americans are not Europeans. We don't need continued reassurance from lofty speeches with throngs of adoring adherents. At this point in the political season, Americans yearn to hear a well articulated and thought out plan for economic stimulation and recovery. An economic game plan we can sink our teeth into!

I'm sorry, but George Will no longer has a modicum of substance. Thirty years ago, certainly. He was entertaining, too. But as he aged he became shrill and empty. Far from the well-spoken, biting, pseudo-intellectual of old. Krauthammer on the other hand has always been a kind of op-ed hit man. But he's never pretended otherwise.

Jobs overseas? one reason is the high cost of providing health care to their workers overa lifetime. Wages are not the biggest issue for small business, but the cost of healthcare, inflation, finding workers, and health care cost. The president is only one part of the legislative process!!! i'll grant that the ancient Greeks did give us the terms to describe despotism (tyranny, draconian, and such), but they actually invented democracy, as noted in another post.

But even if you want to mistake the facade as a symbol of autocratic rule, it is simply dishonest to give the current administration a pass on its actual, deliberate, and documented design to disenfranchise the citizenry and its true representatives: Congress. What was the Framers' original intent in making the Legislative Article I and the Executive Article II of our esteemed Constitution?

Sen. Obama got paid to discourse on the Constitution at a top-flight institution; the market, in other words, has spoken, mendacious punditry aside.

Man, if you could apply such stringent analysis to John McCain, he and his Bush Boys would be a non-starter.

Just think about it, both Bush and McCain were born into the privileged class. McCain, however, a man of privilege born to a warring class, doesn't mind milking being a POW for all he can get out of it. Never mind that his actions of the past eight years have led to the death and dismemberment of thousands of human beings. Never mind that his actions are part of the reason we are spending 10 billion plus a month in Iraq. His error filled judgments, experience, and actions are all okay and qualify him to be president because he managed to survive being captured? You support McCain but criticize the pageantry in celebration of the partial fruition of Dr. Martin Luther King's I have a Dream vision for America?

By the way, I think Dr. King was a man of true courage and an authentic hero. He was someone who tried to appeal to our better angels. While, I see McCain as a dealer of death and destruction.

This seems appropriate given his position as an Elysian dreamer. His acceptance speech will feature glittering rhetoric designed to hold his listeners in a web of absortion more trance-like than attentive. First aid will be available for those prone to fainting or wetting themselves. All 80,000 of his attendees will exit the stadium in unison at the conclusion of the elevation, marching as myrmidons behind this political pied piper, proving Chekov's observation that happy men are those who keep their eyes shut.

The Obama choreograph is just so obvious, without all the productions there is nothing there. A possible foreshadowing of reality for those who believe, no matter how bad things seem now, there are things that are far worse.

The analogies are significant and the stadium appearance is a repeat of the Berlin mistake. We must remember that it is a part of the psychological make-up of dictators and demagogues to appear in grandiose settings in front of as many people as they can command under threat. Fidel Castro, Mugabe, and assorted African and Latin-American demagogues hypnotized their masses using stadiums. It is not fitting to an American democracy.

When is the little hammering kraut, the neo-con noodle head, that he forever seems doomed to be, ever going to get down to some actual conservative substance. This constant unvarnished pandering to the actual Republicans In Name Only (RINO's many of whom are nothing but former bigoted Southern Democrats simply wearing a Republican badge and should be booted from the GOP)is ultimately all to pathetic, when instead real Republicans ought to be doing some real problem solving. Back when that other Southern Democrat, Jimmy Carter, was mucking up America, Ronald Reagan asked the American people if they were better off now than they were four years ago. A lot of Americans are in the same negative predicament and this under a so-called Republican president, "the george". Why isn't a Republican focus on problem solving, real work (the kind that real Republican constituents do every day of the week), instead of these harangues on Obama. He may be construed as an idiot or not, but if we cannot win the American people with our fiscal deeds, then we as Republicans don't deserve to lead the country. If we can't "show the people the money", then why should they vote for Republicans? It is telling of the GOP's fiscal failure when you and the other RINO pundits in the GOP party have to resort to sliming the opposition instead of touting GOP successes in growing the economy to convince the American people of the righteousness of our economic policy. Get real Chuck!

Posted by: Tom | August 27, 2008 1:39 PM | Report abuse

Charles K., your column just made my day. You say what I can't say as eloquently as you do.

What I have to say is that Obama/Axelrod are making a huge mistake if they don't let the roll call go on as the Conventions are supposed to - legitimately, and from beginning to end. Why?

Because everything they do to try to manipulate this election only drives another wedge between Obama and the American people. The American people don't like manipulation of their democratic voting system - and Obama has manipulated this primary all along -

Not letting the roll call vote go on will only add to the long list of reasons we don't trust Barack Hussein Obama, Jr., some of which are the fact he is so secretive about his ethnicity - he is 47.5% Arab - not eligible for the Affirmative Action scholarships he got to go to prestigious, elite schools and universities.

After he fraudulently used the system to get his education, he looks down from his self-annointed mountain top and chastizes and chides people who couldn't afford to go and who did not choose to "use the system."

Obama believes that poor, uneducated people are low i.q. minions. I have his Obama control freaks call people in W.V., etc. that. And Obama, himself, calls the main street and rural people "bitter" turning to God and guns when asked in S.F. why they weren't supporting him (Obama).

Obama has an answer for everything except why he is so disliked and so untrusted. I remind you that if this little narcisstic dicator gets in the White House - he will be the same dictator there that he is at the Convention - he has muzzled the media, according to Tom Brokaw, not to say anything negative, and he is stopping the roll call vote. Who is he to stop that vote, anyway?

The elitists in this country will rue the day that they turned Barack Obama loose on this country, and hi-jacked the Democratic Party, the American people, both black and white. Those people don't work for a living - they don't know the meaning of figuring out how to survive in this economy - they lay around on their chais lounges getting nice tans for the next t.v. opportunity they have. gw.

Gallup poll shows McCain nudging ahead of Obama

by The Times-Picayune
Tuesday August 26, 2008, 5:52 PM

Democrats worried that Barack Obama was not pulling away from John McCain in recent polls were a little shaken today when a Gallup daily tracking poll showed the Republican moving slightly ahead.

PRINCETON, NJ -- It's official: Barack Obama has received no bounce in voter support out of his selection of Sen. Joe Biden to be his vice presidential running mate.
Gallup Poll Daily tracking from Aug. 23-25, the first three-day period falling entirely after Obama's Saturday morning vice presidential announcement, shows 46% of national registered voters backing John McCain and 44% supporting Obama, not appreciably different from the previous week's standing for both candidates. This is the first time since Obama clinched the nomination in early June, though, that McCain has held any kind of advantage over Obama in Gallup Poll Daily tracking.

Chuck just made my point from yesterday. If you want to predict what Krauthammer will write about next just consult the latest GOP talking points on its line of attack. The GOP wants to paint Obama as emperor-in-waiting and guess what Chuck writes about today.

And have you noticed another thing. Whenever a criticism of the conservative movement hits a little too close to the bone, conservatives immediately begin attacking liberals for exactly those things to which conservatives themselves are most prone. When conservatives get slammed by liberals for showing a little too much Aryan Super Race leg when they call Bush critics "traitors" and "terrorist abettors," conservatives immediately come out with books with titles like "Liberal Fascism." And now that Cheney has largely succeeded in presiding over the restoration of the Nixonian imperial presidency, want to guess why our friend Krauthammer has taken to calling Obama our next "Emperor."

Will he be preceded by a Vexilloid of the Roman Empire. "The vexilloid of the Roman Empire was a red banner with the letters SPQR (the Senate and the Roman People)in gold surrounded by a gold wreath hung on a military standard topped by a Roman eagle or an image of the goddess Victoria made of silver or bronze.

We have two candidates which can do the job. Obama has no significant experience but has seemingly alot of potential but what he willa ctually do as President we do not know. McCain has alot of experience and a track record by which his future actions as President can be measured. John McCain is not George Bush ( as much as the progresives which are really the radical left ) and Barack Obama is not John Kennedy since he appears to have more ethics. The reality is that liberals and the radical left will vote for Obama and the conservatives will reluctantly vote for McCain. The winner will be the candidate who gets most of the Clinton voters, the blue collar, the evangelicals if they vote and moderate independents.

Only when a black man runs for president do we start hearing such ridiculous notions. Perhaps its because Obama does not fit the traditional stereotypes of black men so whites have to come up with these creative positions to take on Obama to avoid the obvious reasons they are uncomfortable with him. Let see his name makes him muslim, his church makes him racist, his education makes him elitist, and his multicultured multiracial upbringing makes him a radical and finally his popularity makes him cult like. If this isnt a clear message by some americans that anyone outside of White Men are not welcomed as leader or our country I dont know what is.

The government is run by 3000 top level appointees. These 3000 will be the same people we have now if John McCain is elected. Likewise, it will be a very different 3,000 if a Democrat is elected, REGARDLESS of who that Democrat is.

How stupid have people in this country become?

70% of the population disapproves of George Bush, meaning 30% approve. Yet 51% voted for him in 2004, meaning that 21% of the population are complete morons. Bush was perfectly clear about his policies and priorities and NOTHING he has done since 1/20/05 is surprising or unexpected.

80% of the people in this country think it's on the wrong track, meaning only 20% like the way things are going. Yet 46%, plan today to vote for McCain -- to keep this country on the same track. That means 26% are complete morons.

We have more morons now than we did 4 years ago.

It is consistent within his character to construct his own classical backdrop to add drama to his acceptance speech before a packed house at Invesco Field at Mile High.

I know you as a stark democrat has never demanded that from any other candidate yet obama for some reason has to humble himself to the point he does not even look presidential to make people comfortable with him. Is george bush humble? Is dick "go f#ck youself cheney humble? Is hillary clinton humble? Yet Obama is labeled arrogant for just showing up. I guess he just looks arrogant huh? How come when a black man is accomplished white people are quick to label him as uppity or arrogant. Mohammed Ali was arrogant. Obama is confident like you want your president to be. Dont ask him to humble himself like he is Kobe Bryant or someone like that. He is running for one of the most important jobs in the world, and he is not running for Pope.

Using an imperial or royal seeming backdrop like that is not a wise campaign move. This, however, is not a wisely run campaign, so it's unsurprising they would make a mistake like this.

Seriously guys, this post is merely a continuation of the theme a great deal of people have commented on: the arrogance of Obama (usually written as audacity because of his book). This is not a claim made without support. Obama has displayed his arrogance routinely throughout the campaign.

1) His faux presidential seal he sported for a few days before Jon Stewart (an avid liberal) commented on the fact that he had not yet been elected and thus shouldn't be entitled to use a seal like that.

2)His effort to speak at Brandenburg Gate, a privilege reserved for people who actually had something to do with the Cold War...

3) His promise to unite America in a post-partisan future, when he has not once crossed the aisle on any meaningful issue.

4) His very campaign for the presidency is a pretension considering his complete lack of meaningful political experience and lack of accomplishment while holding any of the posts he assumed.

I realize I will inevitably be called a neocon bush-loving racist for saying this, but the theme of Obama and his pretensions is a theme which has merit.

Friends, have compassion. Charles Krauthammer is suffering from a new neo-con disease of the psyche that I have just discovered. I call it Obama-envy. I have written an article about this disease which will appear in the upcoming issue of "Bipolar Disorder and Sexual Malfunction". My article will feature an analysis of the disease and will feature naked pictures of Krauthammer (with a black bar across his eyes).

The victim of Obama-envy suffers an absolutely corrupting and almost completely debilitating (but not quite debilitating enough) fear of letting go of power and influence. He also hallucinates the object of his fear, Barack Obama, in many different guises: Christ, Napoleon, King Canute and others (this is all drawn from Krauthammer's op-ed pieces). Most irritating to those attempting to live with the victim is his need to write Op-Ed pieces that have the character of Tourette's syndrome.

I hope you will enjoy my article. Look for it at your local newsstands soon.

There's a kind of ugly cowardice in his writings (which I often enjoy, by the way- who else would have the appropriate cynicism to call the Georgian thing what it was?) which is more disappointing than anything. Someone like him could really make a difference and be a power player, but he is squandering his gufts in deference to a bullying, low brow party line.

The last vote that Obama voted in was on earlier in July:

That one is all good - extend the Social Security benefits and services and enhance them fore the low-income populace. (taxes go up though...)

You have to read a little bit further into this one but from what I glanced it looks like it makes consessions for the DAI and AG to: "jointly authorize the targeting (electronic surveillance) of persons located outside the United States in order to acquire foreign intelligence information"

These are just two recent examples of Obama's voting record. Apparently taxes will increase and the DAI & AG will be able to target individuals who are suspect....seems rather....hmmm, socialist to me?

I miss Robert Novak. I never liked his political point of view, but at least he wrote things of substance. Ugghh, if Krauthammer is so partisan, why doesn't he actually help John McCain and write something that actually explains why someone should vote for McCain. All of Krauthammer's articles just pick-on Obama. Then again, I guess this is the McCain election strategy, the Republicans (including Krauthammer) know that Republican doctrine is a failure and that John McCain really doesn't have any interesting ideas, just the same old failed policies on the US' foreign policy, economic growth for no one (unless you make over $5 million a year), and increasing energy dependence abroad. Since McCain can't win on his own, he and Krauthammer can only hope to win by trying to fool Americans that Obama lacks substance, when in reality, McCain offers nothing but failure.

GREEK ARCHITECTURE,ROMAN ARCHITECTURE and OBAMA

For centuries the architecture of Greece and the Roman Republic has represented the highest ideals of civilization -- i.e. democracy. In fact the early Americans chose it for their Capital and the White House, nee the Executive Mansion.

After abandoning ancient architecture for decades, it's nice to see someone besides Andre Rieu using it for it's intended purpose -- to inspire and delight.
Charles Krauthammer, you are a boor and unimaginative when it comes to architectural symbolism.

“Or maybe he'll just do a Napoleon and coronate himself.”

Krauthammer has always seemed to me like some kind of posturing puppet pulling his own strings.

I'm still not convinced that the Cheney-Rove administration is sufficiently in touch with reality if not Realpolitik not to try something goofy like suspending the Constitution to defer an Obama-Biden inauguration indefinitely, like Laura Bush's poetry symposium on Whitman-Dickinson-Hughes in 2003, all in the national interest as an emergency measure for the country's safety, of course.

This election season has shown many of us how complacent we have been about the media reports we received, and how apathetic we have been with our government leaders. Now that we can see the partisan propaganda we are fed under the guise of reporting, we know that we have to check facts for the rest of the story, or the real story, or even the other side of the story. I miss Paul Harvey...who used to say, and now for the rest of the story! It's unfortunate that we have to do that with what we read, or hear from the mass media. But, it's good that this dynamic election have awaken some of us from our slumber. However, the election turns out....people will be watching for future results, and I hope holding candidates accountable.

Instead of reporting to the military intelligence people they'd just leak bogus info to Charles and he'd "Get it out there" in Rovian terms. In other words Charles would print the B.S. before the military authorities, including Gen. Anthony Zinni head of CentCom. had a chance to tell Douggie where to stuff it. Mr. Krauthammer is doing Obama a favor by saying this before his speech. There is still time to take it down.

Why do you think McCain's "Paris Hilton" ad was so successful? Because it portrayed Obama as a larger-than-life celebrity without the substance to back his celebrity up. The idea of that ad was to conjure up this image every time Obama was in front of a large, adoring crowd -- i.e. effectively turning a positive into a negative. And it clearly worked.

But, knowing this, what are Obama's people doing? They are putting him in front of something like 75,000 people with a grandiose temple backdrop.

If I were John McCain I would be salivating at the thought of such an unbelievably pompous setting. I'd be revving up that "Paris Hilton" ad to be shown just before and right after he was finished speaking.

Remember, this is the same Barack Obama who, until he was ridiculed into removing it, had been standing in front of podiums with a version of the presidential seal and his name on it, as if he'd already been elected. It is also the same Obama who had the American flag removed from the tail of his campaign plane and substituted with an Obama logo. And now this.

Do these people ever learn?

I used to at least credit Charles with above-average linguistic and analytic talents, but his rage and spitting anger with the Democratic party has eaten away at his wits like a disease. It’s sad.
As for mere-mortal worship, lest we forget the GOP’s cult of Reagan is a given. One point of consistency for the GOP and its minions is that everything they accuse others of is exactly what the GOP is doing. So if they accuse the Democratic party of being unpatriotic then they are really just saying “ok, we admit it, we really don’t care about injured vets. We would rather not pay taxes.” Everything they say they believe in, strong defense, small government, family values, is all so obviously what they know the Democratic party to support. The GOP’s other consistency is greed.
Imagine if our brave soldiers cried and moaned on the battle field about paying the ultimate price the way GOP rich fat cats cry about paying taxes.

I will repeat what others are asking, why is Charles still being published? I mean really, why?

Michelle Obama shows she's a great, mainstream American Monday night. Hillary delivers a forceful speech last night. You guys only focus on this kind of BS when you're worried. And you should be worried about this fall, you're gonna get routed.

People of sick of what you and your Bush-Cheney-McCain cronies have done to the country, and they're not gonna get suckered again by your silly taunts. But nice try, nonetheless. When President Obama is sworn in in January, maybe you should try your hand at psychiatry again. Better suited to your temperament and talents.

Ah, now that the 3rd Temple has been constructed all Disciples of The One (aka homeless of Denver with their spiffy new haircuts) can gather in adoration, waving palm fronds as He enters his Temple astride a donkey.

Yeah, I get it. All the Liberals were griping about The One entering Saddleback, because it's a church; but it's perfectly acceptable for him to build his own temple to speak at.

Obama's setting typifies the Liberal adoration of politicians- the Left is always seeking a Leader, someone to take them to the Promised Land and supply them with milk and honey!

It is always interesting to me that when Liberals find someone they believe is a potential Messiah, that person becomes worthy of One Name (Hillary, Bill, Barack, Teddy, etc.) Conservatives never seem to be afflicted by this need for expressing affinity and at the same time worship for their politicians.

So of course Obama will be annointed in a Temple. He is the newest Liberal god. We conservatives on the other hand are just looking for an experienced President with integrity and character, and both a first and a last name.

Personally I think Krauthammer is more thoughtful and intelligent than all the above commentators put together. His CV shows that.
But my main point would be this...is all this screeching vituperation a sign of fear, loathing, and desperation in the lib camp?
This convention looks like it was staged by a high school play director. Chaotic, no discipline, and no one in charge. I would think the stadium coronation is the least of BO's worries. He should be looking between his shoulder blades for a knife with the Clinton family crest on it.

Krauthammer is right - Obama needs to downplay his nomination, not be even more grandiose than he has been. There are questions concerning his ego and judgment already, this will only heighten those fears. First the Obama Seal, then Berlin, and now this? Way over the top.

You get a sense of this from his background - his absent, alcoholic father had multiple wives/families, and died young; a stepfather that thwarted is education by enrolling him in a Muslim school; a mother who eventually surrendered his development to her parents; missed racial heritage - Barack is trying to overcome perceived deficiencies and abandonment by the one's from whom he sought approval - his mother and fathers. His biographical data is revealing. I found www.honestjohnwade.com an invaluable resource for insights into the candidates, their backgrounds, and short reviews on the major bios and books about Obama and McCain. Gave me a new, deeper perspective on this election. Excellent insight, Charles.

I doubt most posters would talk as they do in their posts if they were actually attributable to their statements, rather than hidden behind the internets wall of infinite bandwidth.

Obama is so full of himself it's ridiculous, and he's going to pay. He is going down and will sorely regret his unbelievable arrogance. He and his whole campaign are a bunch of PHONIES. Instead of listening to a valid criticism that would help the Democrats here, most people simply attack the messenger. Is Krauthammer a conservative? Yes. He makes no bones about that, unlike 99% of the liberal media. Personally, I'd prefer all journalists tell us their party affiliation, it would make the whole lot of them much more honest.

Obama is making a MASSIVE mistake getting up there in anything that could be construed as the white house. It's presumptuous, arrogant, and turns a lot of middle of the road voters off. You don't get to be president because you say so, you have to earn that right to be president. Pretending to be president is insulting, and very very silly.

The comments that attempt to describe Obama as an empty suit without substance are obviously written by and for people who don't listen or read, because there's plenty in what Obama has said and written.

But what intrigues me are the attack lines based on claims that Obama lacks experience. I for one think we've had all the gray-haired senior officials and experienced corporate types that we could ever want in the George Bush White House. Trouble was we had a President who governed out of bias and ignorance, looked Putin in the eyes and saw his soul, that kind of thing. Bush, who I always thought knew how to campaign successfully, was an intellectual weakling who allowed Cheney, Rumsfeld and the neocons to walk all over him. We need that again? Better to have someone who can think, and excercise judgement, than someone who "has experience" but is guided by ideology and ignorance.

And yes, for a long time, Krauthammer has been a "partisan hack" who throws red meat to people who just want a president they think they can drink a beer with. I for one hope for something a bit better, in Presidents and columnists.

Heaven forbid ordinary people participate in political movement and support something they believe in. This nomination speech isn't about Obama; it's about the millions of people hoping that praying that someone will step up and put an end to this national nightmare. When it's time to give his speech, he'll grab cage bars, shake them violently and scream at the top of lungs....."I WAS A PRISONER FOR 5-1/2 YEARS, THAT'S ENOUGH EXPERIENCE TO BE PRESIDENT".....enough said.

As a rule I loathe your politics. This disgust is tempered somewhat by the fact that you can actually write, a skill that has evaporated almost entirely from American life.

That said, you need a refresher with Webster: "coronate" is never ever a verb. Indeed, there's no such word. Never was. The plain old Anglo Saxon "crown" should do for a replacement.

If you must churn out Neanderthal polemic at least have the decency to do so in proper English. George Will does.

Pathetic...

Considering the balance, I'm sure they know their readership and their editorial content, which leaks so freely into their reporting, reflects that. Just because they're not as liberal as you'd like them to be...

Kurt: You're absolutely right. Charles should take Objectivity and Neutrality for Columnists 101 from Harold Meyerson, E.J. Dionne, Eugene Robinson and the rest of the left end of the stable, who seem perfectly content to do the DNC's strategy work for it.

OBAMA TO FEED ANTICHRIST CONJECTURE

I have just seen the unbelievable photos of Obama's Temple at the Foorball Stadium where he will accept the Dem Nomination..

Since the news media are utter Pagans, they will not be aware of a belief by some Christians that the Book of Revelation (In the Bible) prohesies that the Antichrist will be known when he enters the Temple and declares himself God. The prophecy is also in the Old Testament in Daniel 9:24-27.

Now the Temple has to be in Jerusalem, not Denver, and Obama is quite frankly too STUPID to be the Antichrist, but the imagery is unbelievably divisive.

And African Americans, his core constituency, are some of the strongest Christians with detailed knowledge of Bible prophecy.

Why is Obama doing this idiocy? Has his keeper gone on vacation?

And not to leave out any religious groups, Jewish viewers may also have a problem, which they will never state, with mass meetings at night, outdoors, with lights on the Supreme Charasmatic Leader.

Especially when the Supreme Leader's middle name is Hussein who was raised by a Moslem mother...

Has anyone noticed the section is titled Post 'Partisans'? It's an opinion section people. And yes, the Post has a reputation as a liberal paper but maybe they don't want to fall into the trap of NYT & MSNBC where their news reporting is written off as being so biased it can't even be considered news. I think they're attempting to show independence and neutrality the way old fashioned people of integrity used to be....
Regarding Obama, I think much of his recent behaviors and presumptions could be compared to Bush's 'Mission Accomplished' landing on the air craft carrier. He's reading too much of his own press and needs to realize we want someone who has a unique opinion and doesn't just follow the complete leftist party line. It's not because he's black, it's because he sounds like McGovern and his hippie (aka moveon.org) supporters and is totally out of touch with working people. It's the economy stupid but he's out there with Pelosi saving the planet... I support conservation but I'm not planning to live in a cave.

I usually disagree with Chuck on almost everything but in this case I think he makes a very good point. The idea is beyond ridiculous! Mr Krauthammer:

As a rule I love your politics. This admiration for you is paired with the fact that you can actually write, a skill that has evaporated almost entirely from American life.

With that said, I find that I need a refresher with Merriam-Webster: "coronate" is a word, and a verb, that I, in ALL my supreme ignorance, had never heard before! Indeed, as always, you are right! There IS such a word. Always was. The plain old Anglo Saxon "crown" is the only word I knew, because I'm such a dodohead, I couldn't think of the far more accurate "coronate" for a replacement.

I have learned that since I only churn out Neanderthal polemic at least in the future will try hard to have the decency to do so in proper English. Charles Krauthammer always does.

Again, forgive me for my idiocy.

That's what Pravda was. That's not what the Post is.

Taking issue with something as simple as a stage and making that support a world view in which no one could accomplish or aspire to a nobler purpose says so much more about the writer than the object of their criticism.

Barack Obama has conducted himself with dignity in the face of partisan attacks designed only to enrage. His accomplishments, dedication and commitment are clear. If you cannot see that Charles, it is your issue not his.

For the rest of us, who are able to hope. Who are tired of 8 years of an administration that exploits the worse in all of us and has exposed this country to ecomonic decay and world ridicule. Those of us who look at how McCain is conducting his campaign and say, enough. Obama '08

In 1992, Neil Kinnock looked a certainty as the next British prime minister. A few weeks prior to the election, the Labour party staged a rally where he and his outspoken wife Glynys appeared to be congratulating themselves, fist-in-the-air style, for winning power from Margaret Thatchers legacy Conservatives. The Brits looked at each other and said wait just a cotton-pickin' minute, and the election went solidly to the Conservatives.

Breathtaking how ignorant the cool aid drinkers on the left can be. Mr. Krauthammer has more intelligence and insight than 3/4 of lefties combined. This is one of the rare times I've agreed with the crabby guy in the wheelchair.

Obama HAS gone over the top. He's not MADONNA--this is REAL, not a place for stage-sets or inappropriate use of flags as decorative devices.

The DNC Pepsi stage was bad enough--it looked like Bethlehem before the Birth of the Messiah...but this is asinine.

I can't believe that even the eighteen to twenty eight year old set are so stupid as to think this nonsense is "cool." It's not cool--it's SCARY that an adult would be so insecure as to NEED all these idiotic trappings to make himself seem important.

Simplicity is elegance, Barack. Surely your grandmother taught you that. Why didn't you listen?

Democrats are created through the following ways:

1. They are too dumb to run their own lives so they need Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Joe Biden to do it.

2. Even worse, they are too dumb to even figure out who to vote for without their overweight union boss telling them who to vote for.

3. They feel really strong about killing babies and they want to reserve the right to do it.

4. If you live in the ghetto, Barack Obama will bring the MTV cribs bus to your community

5. They somehow feel like we need the rest of the world to like us even though we should have nuked about 5 countries on September 12, 2001. It is important for Germany to like us, because God knows they never did anything bad throughout history. Well, maybe a couple of bad things.

I have to respectfully disagree with "What happened to the understated way in which our founding fathers ( and mothers) served this country. They were all about the business of governing and serving not creating a rock opera complete with a stage and sets." I have studied American Political history for some time now and I will tell you that we have always loved a spectacle, and that some of our founding fathers were masters at creating them. For example, George Washington would ride a carriage out on the trail and then jump out and ride his horse Nelson into towns to greet people. His version of tailhook landing I guess. The right has long celebrated Ronald Reagan as a politician that conveyed magnatism and celebrity to country's benefit. He was "The Great Communicator" is magnatism no longer important? I do not think that our so called post 9/11 world is incompatible with a President who is liked and respected. Also, if you want a case study in changing your mind, or altering your politics to win a race. See John McCain from 5 years ago. I'm not judging him, I respect leaders who change their mind and grow into their skin. But let's drop the hyperbole about Obama's inexperience and meteoric rise. John Kennedy, FDR, and Abe Lincoln were all criticized for lack of experience, it worked out well for us that we elected them.

It appears to many of the American Voters CAN BE BOUGHT by a person that has NO JOB HISTORY that warrants consideration for ever remotely being qualified to LEAD a world power. He has not controlled major budgets, not made any tough decisions, and at his best he was a community organizer.

Nothing that would be valuable on a resume for a Vice-President of a major corporation and definitely nothing that would even get him in the door as a CEO or a MAJOR COMPANY. Unless it was something that he qualified for as being 'black' and connected.)

He and his campaign will spend in excess of 500 MILLIO9N DOLLARS to make him King of America. None of it HIS MONEY.

He has shown himself to be bright and a gifted speaker. But NOTHING other than his speeches and his HARVARD LAW DEGREE that warrants even being considered for the highest office in the land.

He is a product of the media, smoke and mirrors, the DNC and the best advertising that money can buy.

And he will be BUYING your vote, and becoming filthy rich on the backs of the American People.

Do your research and TRY to discover what makes the guy tick.. He is nothing more than a 'snake oil salesman' and he is selling himself as KING OF AMERICA.

And we're not impressed with it.

Krauthammer, sounds like a evident stretch to me, I'm just sayin.

If you said something positive from time to time about an individual who's truely American story engenders some admiration, in some part from most rational Americans weather or not they fully agree policy-wise, then we might consider your cheap 2 American cents as worth the second it would take to stoop down and pick em up.

But I guess you can't do that, so tell me this Kraugthy, what in heaven or you for? After you give the answer we know your're going to give, answer this WHY? What have you been looking at, because millions of Americans would love to have that reassurance that you and your cronies must have hidden somewhere, why else would you fight so vociferously the notion that you may be wrong, the lives of 75% of Americans over the last 25 years would renounce your claim that neo-conology has ever even worked for all Americans.

Businesses? did you say businesses? economy? your arguements are all smoke and mirrors, someone explain how my rationale is wrong, I need that to keep my sanity, here goes.

Consumer Spending consitutes 3/4 of the strenght of our economy. (Business must do well for America to do well, I get it)

Now, small business endearvors consitute over half of the U.S. workforce, many far from millionaires, I get that.

Now, most small businesses are started by middle class workers who save prudently and live responsibly with an eye towards their future goals. I get that , I'm one of these Americans.

Now you and the Rebublicans claim that if we support these small business, through tax policy, and trade policy, their growth will ensure market stability and growth. (right!)

now here's where you lose me it appears to me to as being outside the perview of Government to reward those who reach this point fastest with the added advantage of preferential policy, I was under the impression that free-market capitalism and competition was at the heart of what makes this country the best on planet earth.

But, I understand you perspective, however it happens to appear erily similar to Chinese Nationalism in a plutocratic and corporatist oil can. Open competition between individuals and the innovative and competitive spirit of the American people will prevail.

If small business (A) find it difficult to remain competitive in this changing market, then maybe they should step aside.

If we know the primary buttress, of our economy is small business, and that responsible middle class Americans start small businesses, then it seems completely rationale that we should make it as easy as possible for more middle class Americans to rise to the level of operating competive small businesses, sure those who got there first would like to CONSERVE there preferred treatment, but that just isn't the American way, you get treated in direct proportion to the sole vote that you can cast as a American, nothing more, that would be un-American.

This is what I hear from Sen. Obama, there are millions of working class Americans with the experience to operate successful small businesses, which will move the country forward economically, many Americans feel that they are amongst that group, which would like to contribute even more to the people of this great nation, but they are finding it difficult to live the life they was living just 15 years ago.

Small businesses don't dominate the Lobby in Washington, nor McCain's Campaign do they Krauthy.

Competition doesn't only apply to international trade, but our domestic economy as well, and in my opinion the lack of domestic competition will be the primary reason we fall behind expectations in the global economy.

Give it some thought people, I would rather be a liberal for American workers that a conservative for international money changers who could care less about any American workers.

thaat the rich five millionaire in the top .001% of our great nation.

We need to stop relying on this sorry bunch of ego manics, take charge of our own lives and help the others in our lives like our families and neighbors. Politicians may make you feel like your doing something but in reality your just stroking their egos and wiping your hands of the problems you face in your lives. I find the candidates voting history that they provide intersting. Obama's record is deplorable, but what can you expect from someone that has spent the majority of his time in Congress running for President?!? There's an article in the Chicago papers that shows how out of touch he is with his state (ie. the people he is currently supposed to represent but doesn't). When they asked IL's 2 U.S. Senators what they thought about current issues in IL, Sen Durbin gave answers on all topics... Obama was clueless and was quoted as "I'm not up to speed." Pretty much goes along with his answer from Saddleback = "above his pay grade."

I really don't understand the issue with partisan columnists. While I understand that the average Post reader only wants leftist opinion, I'd much rather see insight from an honest, openly declared partisan, than a so-called "objective" journalist who merely hides her proclivities.

Frankly, we are better served when we have partisan news outlets that are honest about thier editorial perspectives than we were in the days of the old media where only left leaning voices were heard.

I'd rather have a situation where we have left leaning organizations defending left leaning officials and questioning claims on the right, and the same occuring with right leaning organizations. If you choose, you can sample both and get a full picture if you choose.

Without both perspectives, you end up with a media that doesn't question certain politicians because they are "right on the issues."

Barack Obama's father was Muslim and therefore, according to Islamic law, so is the candidate.

In spite of the Quranic verses explaining that there is no compulsion in religion, a Muslim child takes the religion of his or her father. … for Muslims around the world, non-American Muslims at any rate, they can only ever see Barack Hussein Obama as a Muslim." In addition, his school record from Indonesia lists him as a Muslim.

This denial of our history sets a very dangerous precedent for our future.

Obama is of the New Age Church of Oprah saying "there are millions of paths to heaven."

Obama has denied his Christian faith. Obama gave a speech saying that "America is not a Christian nation."

Like Nancy Pelosi, Obama believes the Catholic Church's stance on abortion for 2000 years is somehow now controversial, because they want it to be. Pelosi should be excommunicated, and well as Biden.

The whole idea of this Greek Temple setting must be to draw attention away from what he says, which is nothing except "hope and change" which is getting pretty darn boring. The setting does highlight the guys amazing ego esp. considering his accomplishments wouldn't qualify him to run a Dairy Queen.

It's quite funny how your column is acting like a liberal beatle trap, if only ... !

People perish for lack of knowledge. Obama's speech comes on the Anniversary of MLK's "I Have A Dream." MLK gave the speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial which is situated between columns. That's the significance of the columns. Let's stop trying to make it more than it is. Besides, where else would they put all the millions of new and young voters who can't get into the convention center?

I agree with Krauthammer. I voted for Obama in the Calif primary, but now I'm having serious reservations. This guy has a Messiah complex - First, a presidential seal, even though he had yet to be even nominated, now a Greek Temple -- as if he were a Greek god -- for his nomination speech. No wonder he can't seem to attract votes from working class Dems. I think I might vote for Ralph Nader.

The problem with Obama's young supporters is that they don't understand how annoying they seem to the rest of us.

Every time Obama said, "WE are the ones we've been waiting for," the implied flip-side of that message is, "And the older generation should just be put out to pasture."

Well, Obama has now gotten the youth vote. Good for him. Let's see if he can get the votes of folks at my age. We're not turned on by gigantic extravaganzas with thousands of people. I've never been to a rock concert in my entire life either.

All the pomp and circumstance can't make up for the fact that the Obama campaign is arrogant, impetuous, immature, naive, and frankly, irritating. In short, they need to grow up.

Great column by Krauthammer....Again this shows this elitist phony named Obama thinks he should be coronated, not elected. Obama was expecting a 15% jump between announcing Biden as his VP choice and his convention. Instead, McCain is tied or up in the polls, what a wonderful day!!!! Hopefully in November he will enter through the columns like the Roman Colisium, to be eaten by the Clintonites who truly did get screwed!!!

Obama's problem isn't going to be giving a speech at the stadium with greek pillars, etc. I'm sure his speech will be eloquent and exiciting, yada yada yada. Hillary only scratched the surface when she pointed out he is all talk and very little substance. If she had hit him up with that earlier on instead of "playing nice", he would have been the one talking last night.
Fact is, the Republicans have no reason to hold back & have plenty of ammo - some of which just added by VP nominee Biden (and this time, it wasn't plagiarized).
I have a feeling if Obama tries to hard to get all the pomp & circumstance rolled into his speech, it will come back to haunt him in the same way the Germany speech has -> all rhetoric, that comes crashing down when taken to task.

Only in a the most ignorant enclaves of our American democracy could people think that the candidate who is more popular is somehow, therefore, wicked.

Do you people understand the concept of democracy? Popularity is a good thing. It is, collectively, the will of the people.

When there is education reform, and standards are enforced, your kids are going to kick your arses in dinnertime political debates. I know that some of you would probably respond by beating the the shyte out of them, so you need to take a good, hard think about what a future of health care and education and progress is going to do to your miserable worldview...

Hey, I can agree that celebrity worship of a politician is certainly not professional, or relevant to his abilities to lead. But since when can Mr. Krauthammer equate it with a dictator? What do they say? "Don't hate me because I'm beautiful."

You're more than welcome to not want to vote for Obama based on policy, or even personality. But don't hate the man for being popular, no matter how silly it may be.

As I recall, George Bush landed on a Navy vessel, in a fighter jet in full military gear with a massive banner reading "Mission Accomplished" behind it.

Doesn't that sound a little grandiouse too?

Jane Fairfax spammed commentary misses the point. Hitler used his personality cult to build enormous levels of support among young people too. Young people are sheep. Stupid, ahistorical and easily led. They follow any Pier Piper who promises green pastures. Obama is, metaphorically-at least- the personification of the demonic. So are all his supporters and enablers. It is time to begin planning the resistance to his intended dictatorship.

More charming and kindhearted conservative discourse -- comparing Obama to Mussolini.

"In Obama's case his religion is completely irrelevant. His Christian Church purveys as much hate as any Taliban sponsored Mosque"

The same church received $1.5 million from Bush's office of Faith-Based Initiatives because it offers housing programs, employment programs, HIV and cancer programs, scholarships, drug abuse programs. A few crazy rants from its pastor over the course of a few decades doesn't mean it's all bad, nor does it mean that Obama shares those views.

After all, Bush's spiritual adviser (and the person who presided over the marriage of Jenna) has endorsed Obama. Doesn't mean Bush agrees.

Thank you, Mr. Krauthammer for the editorial. Spot on.

Look for 'hubris' in the dictionary and you will find a picture of Obama.

It may not be too familiar a phrase for many posters here, but remember:

"Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall."

I'm an Obama supporter but this is pure hubris and very dangerous. The defeat- from -the -jaws -of -victory fate of the UK Labour Party in the 1992 election was traced back by almost all commentators to Neil Kinnock's infamous "We're aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalright now" speech at his party's pre-election convention. Poncing around in front of a Greek Temple is not a wise move for a candidate who needs to do all he can to portray himself as being on the same wavelength as the common man.

http://www.nationaljournal.com/njmagazine/cr_20080628_6561.php

The current polls are based on old turnout models. The 18-29 vote is going to be 25% of the electorate this year, vs 17% in 2k4. Black voters will be coming out 20-30% more. Obama has the largest field organization in modern political history, and he'll have a likely 3-1 spending advantage after the conventions. And Americans want change.

I understand that one of you nutjobs is more than likely going to get Obama, but I also understand that he is going to win.

I'd love to see one rule set down and followed by both teams. No more involking Nazis, Dictatorships, Benito, Adolph, Joseph, or any of the other popular HUGE overstatements both sides like to partake in. I find it offensive but not because John or Barack can't take that sort of blow, but because it undermines what those awful regimes did in Europe so many years ago. Americans have never lived under a militaristic dictator, and never experienced the scale of what those leaders did to their countries. It is an insult to those who suffered in camps, fought for the resistance, and more importantly stormed the beaches to as FDR so elegantly stated "set free a suffering humanity." So please, I'm not asking as a righty or a lefty, stop using these examples to note differences in Healthcare plans. It's apples to elephants.

"Obama was expecting a 15% jump between announcing Biden as his VP choice and his convention."

Actually, McCain said that Obama should expect a 15% convention bounce. You know why he said that? Because that's the bounce Clinton got in '92 -- coincidentally, the bounce was half because Perot temporarily left the race at the same time as the convention. That way, no matter whether Obama gets a bounce or not, McCain can downplay it.

"Barack Obama's father was Muslim and therefore, according to Islamic law, so is the candidate."

Last I checked, our country doesn't follow Islamic law.

"Obama has denied his Christian faith. Obama gave a speech saying that "America is not a Christian nation.""

He said it's not JUST a Christian nation. Last I checked, there are quite a few people of other religions around here, too.

"nother political personality rode to power on a WAVE OF A PERSONALITY CULT just like Obama is trying to do now. His name was Hitler"

More love and level-headedness from the conservatives, huh.

I find all the critiques of Obama as a celebrity rather amusing, considering that the Republicans have deified Ronald Reagan. They claim that Obama is nothing but a good speaker clothed by an empty suit when the patron saint of conservatism was nothing more than a smile, a good speaker and an empty suit. Reagan was swept to power thanks to a cult of personality, and Obama will likely ride a similar wave--the only difference is the latter might accomplish some good things.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 27, 2008 5:01 PM | Report abuse

That's not a greek temple. If you look closely it is to resemble the white house and the blue carpet and the round area the Oval Office. He is going to try and make himself look presidential by having a white house backdrop and an oval office/well of the US House look to his speaking area.

From above it looks like the well of the House during the state of the union. From the ground it looks like he will be speaking outside the west wing in the White House.

This is one of the biggest mistakes in political history waiting to happen. He thinks it will make him presidential. Instead I think the vast majority of Americans watching at home will see a blindly arrogant, desperate man stretching wildly to close that gap that most of America believes he is not ready to be President.

He is going to try to do with a backdrop what Hillary could have done for him in one speech. Make him appear ready to be President by putting it in people's minds he is at the White House already.

this is going to be hilarious to watch. if the people fall for this then we are a nation of idiocracy plain and simple. I have faith the people will see it as desperation and arrogance combined to form the Hurricane of Defeat

To try to make it into something more is just plain wrong. The mechanics of how the stage works is really irrelvant. What we should be concerned about is what policies Obama will present. But, the neocons don't want to talk about that because all of their policies have failed. People like Krauthammer are responsible for the divisive politics which stop our government from functioning at all. Of course, that is what the neocons want because that way they can do whatever they want without worrying about the government enforcing the many rules that protect us from violation of our constitution and civil rights.

Hey steveo: Reagan was loved, not worshipped.
More importantly, Reagan was humble in the presence of his God. He recognized limits in what he could do. Accordingly, he accomplished more of lasting value than any President of the last 60 years.
Finally, Reagan had actually done something before running for President. He articulated a well thought-out political philosophy contrary to Obama's deliberately vague-all things to all people meanderings.
Obama is not fit to stand in Reagan's shadow.

"Barry Hussein Osamba needs to give his speech in German - the brown shirt kool aid drinkers will probably give him "Heil Obama's" during his speech since the stadium reminds me of Germany in the 1930's."

More sane, level-headed commentary from the right.

"

Let's meet B. Hussein Obama's mentors:

1. Frank Marshall Davis, Communist Party Leader in Hawaii;
2. Rashid Khalidi, radical professor of Arab studies at Columbia University;
3. Jeremiah Wright, radical Black Liberation Theologist; and
4. Bill Ayers, terrorist who bombed the Capitol, Pentagon and NYC police station.

What kind of "changes" does Obama have in mind for America?"

1. If you read Obama's first book, you'd notice that he goes on to repudiate Davis as a black power goofball stuck in the past.
2. He's a professor; the radical bit is a claim that he worked for the PLO, something he denies and has never been proven to have done.
3. I remarked on Wright above.
4. They live near each other. They happened to be on an anti-poverty board together. Obama was invited to his house by the person who preceded him in office as a fundraiser.

This "leader worship" that you dupes have embraced is both silly and disturbing.

I guess that's what happens when you reject God as America's only Sovereign, and embrace a false prophet in an empty suit instead.

Pathetic and blind liberals, when will you finally see the path of destruction upon which you tread? Only after it's too late?

Remember, If God is America's ONLY Sovereign, then NOBODY can take your freedoms away.

...But If Man becomes America's Sovereign, then MAN will most certainly take your freedoms away.

It's funny how so many people are angry that the wash. post has editorialists who are conservative. After domaninating editorial sections in so many papers, liberals are not used to seeing the other side expressed in a major newspaper. Bill Kristol gets the same reaction from New York Times readers. Now you liberals know how we feel to have to bite our tongue every time we read the liberal editorials and Bush bashing that we have to read on a daily basis.

Tomorrow Belongs to Me

I truly believe this stadium event in Denver will backfire. Millions of Americans will be watching and if there is the sort of screaming adulation that is expected many of them will wonder, "Why don't I get it?" and be turned off.

I have followed this campaign closely and Obama’s stump speech has not changed much since January. His rhetoric is the same and is full of empty promise that sounds and perhaps even feels good to some (Chris Matthews?). He got away with it before Reverend Wright appeared on the scene and he began to get defined by external sources. I suspect that by November his soaring speeches will sound tinny and even whiny.

He was haranguing us in Saint Paul the night he clinched, and the scene made me think of Leni Riefenstahl and "Triumph of the Will". Liberals (who the media are now calling “progressives” (isn’t it funny how the MSN gets these talking points down so quick?)) are the new Fascists and Obama appears to be their leader.

Another image comes to mind: from the movie Cabaret. There all the gullible Germans join in singing a rousing chorus of "Tomorrow Belongs to Me!". Another hopeful tune about "change" that accompanied Hitler's ascendancy and butchery. At the very end of the scene one old man turns away in disgust.

Now, perhaps, we must turn to another old man to save us from a charming demagogue.

Obama has a problem and that is a campaign that is short on substance, and he thinks that hard-knuckled Americans are going to be suckered with bread and circuses. Moving the venue from the Pepsi Center to Invesco field is an error, and making things appear even more grandious is in keeping with Obama's ego, but far out of step with an electorare that can easily see through the phoney facades in Beijing just as easily as it can see through Obama's phoniness and rhetoric. Obama is a just a typical politician, and rather than appealing for votes, he is appealing for a coronation--as Emprorer. The American people wil get exactly the kind of government they deserve--exactly what they allow themselves to be suckered into: Marxist wealth redistribution through the tax code and spending programs under an Obama regime. Krauthammer has a point, and it should not be lost upon a wary public.

reagan was a terrible president who happened to preside over a stronger economic period for the country than bush has. Bush has implemented all of reagan's policies to the letter and, what do you know, they've failed on a massive scale. But you want to go further into it, sure. Reagan built the mujaheddin in Afghanistan, then let the country rot on the vine after the Soviets left, which of course set the stage for the taliban. He gave saddam hussein weapons and supplies, including the ingredients for WMD, which was the ostensible "purpose" for going to Iraq under Bush. he backed countless counterinsurgency efforts in central and south america leading to the deaths of 10s of thousands of innocent people, all because those people had elected leftist governments POPULARLY. he cut taxes and raised spending, sending our national debt from 1 trillion in 1980 to 3.5 trillion in 1988. shall i go on? reagan was a FAILURE.

Furthermore, and I'll play this out for those of you who don't have a sense for the big picture here, if someone 'gets' Obama and the post-mortem reveals that the nutjob was motivated by the Republican negative campaigning that demonized Obama, then you can be sure that not only is McCain's reputation going to hell but that the rules of these campaigns will be changed and you Republicans will then have to learn to campaign without your biggest weapons: fear and campaign hate-speech. What does it gain a party to make an unwinnable election close, if it loses its soul and its tactics?

Posted by: Deep Blue | August 27, 2008 5:06 PM

Deep Blue, Please note that the neocons lost their soul back in 2000 when Bush demonized McCain and again in 2004 when the Swift Boat nazis demonized Kerry. What they have not yet figured out is that when they create hatred, rather than engage in honest debate, they create their own problems. Bush is the most unpopular president in modern history. It is not just a matter of people not liking his policies but the fact that he is such a dispicable human being created by Karl Rove and Dick Cheney. I have to believe this country is better than people like Rove, Cheney, Bush, McCain and Krauthammer.

Obama's claim that the past eight years have been an economic disaster, but he hasn't lived long enough to know a real economic disaster when he sees one. His massive tax hikes might just do it!

We had a good economy until the Democrats took over Congress in January 2007. From then on the economy went in the tank because Democrats wanted to cause a recession before the November 2008 election.

If you are hurting economically now, you can thank Democrats like Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Chris Dodd. They can't wait for the depression if Obama gets in. Their answer is to throw more money at it, whether we have it or not, and expand government control for the new world order socialist state.
