One of the Revelers

I snapped this photo last night in front of the White House, where thousands (?) gathered spontaneously to celebrate Obama's victory. It was like one huge fraternity party. Lots of dancing, mugging, cheering: "Yes we did, yes we did, yes we did."

By 2 a.m., when I started to walk home, the White House had turned off its floodlights. Nobody home? Or, more likely, the president's home could no longer serve as a backdrop for the celebration outside. It was... symbolic.

Joan Baez and a male companion (not the one shown here) were both wearing tiger robes. Tiger robes? What hotel in Washington provides tiger robes? [The Kimpton hotels, according to my editor.]

Before all of you folks come down so hard on President-elect Obama and Ms. Parker for writing about him, how about given our new president a chance to prove himself on the job? you may not be happy that he won, but if he helps our country move in the right direction, won't that benefit the McCain supporters as well as the Obama supporters?

Kathleen,
Now you see what the Republican Party has created/become over the years. There is still a place for conservatism in America. How are you going to dismantle this monster, so that the country can benefit from intelligent conservative ideas?

Darlene5289,

Please give me a concise definition of socialism, followed by one of communism.

I suspect you (and many others throwing the term in Obama's direction) might not really understand what these two forms of government entail.

As for Parker's "hit pieces": as a (presumed) conservative, you should theoretically be supportive of our constitution and the first amendment (aren't you into "strict constructionism"?). Why get angry at Ms. Parker for exercising her rights? She is writing in the opinion section, after all. Maybe take some time and reflect on why she found Palin an unacceptable VP nominee.

We learned to live with Pres. Bush. Please make an effort to gracefully accommodate Pres. Obama. That is, after all, Senator McCain's request to his supporters.

What vicious comments. It is very easy to see why voters are turning away from the repubs.

I guess when you have nothing intelligent to say, all you can do is call people names.

Two people who have posted comments here appear to be somewhat deficient in their understanding of political and economic systems and the differences among and between them. I wish that thesepersons would take the time to learn about that of which they speak before they spread their ignorance and hate.

Damn there are a lot of sad, angry, small minded people running around this site. Not since Stalin's USSR have I seen such profound hatred spewed towards a traitor of the faith - how dare Ms. Parker take pride in our country's ability to do the unthinkable. How dare she attack a clearly unqualified, unprepared and unacceptable candidate for VP - who is after all running as an R. Independent thinking is clearly no longer welcome in the modern Republican party, could that perhaps explain the party's recent failings in the electoral process?

Darlene5289, and the others calling Ms. Parker a "WAPO Rabit Attack Dog Obama Skill":

It's the stupidity you project why I voted for Barack Obama for president. The Republican party talks about a center-right party, a party of the people, but how does a party with conservatives like you represent me? You will doom the republican party from the Grand Old Party to the party of God, Guns and Dumb.
