The Obama Guest List

This just in: Dillon, S.C., eighth-grader Ty'Sheoma Bethea, who figured in my Sunday column about crumbling rural schools, has been tapped for special duty tonight. She'll be sitting with first lady Michelle Obama during President Obama's address to Congress.

Ty'Sheoma is a student at J.V. Martin Junior High, one of several schools along South Carolina’s “Corridor of Shame.” J.V. Martin has been on Obama’s radar since he visited during a 2007 campaign swing. And a recent letter from Ty’Sheoma, asking that Washington not forget her school, reportedly landed on his desk just before he flew to Chicago for Presidents’ Day weekend.

Dillon started buzzing last Saturday when Secret Service agents were spotted in town and the Federal Bureau of Investigation notified J.V. Martin officials that the president would be calling Ty'Sheoma's house.

Ty’Sheoma’s mother, Dina Leach, will also attend the speech tonight.

Ahhh. That must feel good. The Prez is reading your column and acting on it. Bibartisanship is good ain't it. Even reaching out to right-wing columnists. Thanks for the good work
