Irving Kristol's Intellectual Universe

The passing of Irving Kristol is a very sad occasion. He was a truly great man, a great intellectual, and a great, patriotic servant to his country. He was also a unique inspiration, to me personally, and to untold thousands of other young people for whom he provided a model of the intellectual life well-lived. He was a deep and fierce thinker, who nevertheless delivered his thoughts in the most amiable fashion, without animus or bile. He was curious and invited others to be curious, to engage in serious dialogue on the important issues of the day.

He was also a creator of communities and institutions. He occupied a unique space between the world of the mind and the world of action. Networks of thinkers, policy-makers, and politicians revolved around him -- and not because he thrust himself into their midst but because his mind and character attracted them to him. To go to work for him, as I did fresh out of college almost 30 years ago, was to enter a rich and exciting intellectual universe, filled with learning and integrity and a commitment to the well-being of society. I fear such a universe may no longer exist. But the memory of what Irving Kristol created is enough to warm the soul for a lifetime.

Let us be clear. Irving Kristol was one of those who supported and pushed for the invasion of Iraq. THE INVASION OF IRAQ WAS AND STILL IS A MISTAKE. I use capital letters here because there are still some people out there that, despite all facts to the contrary, believe to the contrary and virtually none of the neoconservatives have apologized to the American people for the invasion. Therefore, Mr. Kristol was NOT a great man, and, if one reads some of his writings, even just a few, one finds that Mr. Kristol was wrong about virtually everything he ever wrote about. I do not wish to speak ill of the dead but the most patriotic thing that Mr. Kristol ever did was to pass away, because by passing he no longer speaks or writes and no longer influences politicians into making costly mistakes like the invasion of Iraq, THE WORST FOREIGN POLICY DEBACLE THIS COUNTRY HAS EVER PERPETRATED.

When the hell are you people going to learn this? Personally, I am fed up with you guys.

HS this is the only thing i could think of in response to your article.

Posted by: krj1944cableonenet | September 18, 2009 4:55 PM | Report abuse

Irving Kristol did two things for which he can never be forgiven:

1. He founded the American Enterprise Institute, from whence everything that is putrid about Washington emanates. Its influence on America has been malign.(That it was/is Dick Cheney's favorite place to give his speeches says enough.)

2. He fathered Bill Kristol, who -- along with Robert Kagan -- co-founded PNAC, the cabal of neo-con crazies and Zionists who polluted the Pentagon and the Bush White House with their plans, drawn up in the late 1990s, for the invasion of Iraq (and Iran).

The depth of Irving Kristol's much-ballyhooed intellect can be garnered from the following (courtesy of blog commenter Harry Hopkins):

"I remember back in the late 1990s, when Ira Katznelson, an eminent political scientist at Columbia, came to deliver a guest lecture. Prof. Katznelson described a lunch he had with Irving Kristol during the first Bush administration.

"The talk turned to William Kristol, then Dan Quayle's chief of staff, and how he got his start in politics. Irving recalled how he talked to his friend Harvey Mansfield at Harvard, who secured William a place there as both an undergrad and graduate student; how he talked to Pat Moynihan, then Nixon's domestic policy adviser, and got William an internship at the White House; how he talked to friends at the RNC [Republican National Committee] and secured a job for William after he got his Harvard Ph.D.; and how he arranged with still more friends for William to teach at Penn and the Kennedy School of Government.

"With that, Prof. Katznelson recalled, he then asked Irving what he thought of affirmative action. 'I oppose it,' Irving replied. 'It subverts meritocracy.' "

My thoughts go out to his family and friends. He was the architect of neoconservatism. All the warm tributes will give hope to the poor guy that came up with New Coke. I am sure his standing and endeavours will survive whatever his son and Sarah Palin do to them. Peace.

Unfortunately for America, the country Irving Kristol served was Israel.

He was a goddamned traitor to the U. S. so the country you refer to (but curiously don't name) to which he was so patriotic must be Israel.

It's time for zionists like you Kagan to be measured for a rope.

But by all means let us know where he will be buried, once in a while I have the runs and would love to squat in reflection over this fine man.

For deacades Mr. Kristol and his son have done more to stratify, fragmant and damage this country than anyone except "Old Nick" himself, Milton Friedman. These were/are people who want to reinstitute a system of elitism that borders on royalism. That's one reason why the Kennedy's angered you so much: they were revered by their followers.

If, as Dr. Krauthammer is saying, the "public interest" has died, then why are no comments allowed to be posted in response to his valorization of Mr. Kristol? Or did you just draw the short stick, Mr. Kagan?

Liberal ideology may be inherintly meek, but ultra conservatives are cowards. Rather than let your ideology speak for itself by achiewving positive results for all Americans, you continually have to rig the game either rhetorically or by materially breaking or altering the law to make it look like you're right.

Long live the king.

Was not Mr. Kristol a communist before he became a NeoCon? It is a good thing he was not a liberal Democrat or he would never have been able to live down the commie label. Maybe they should be called NeoComms instead of NeoCons. Once a commie always a commie.

Irving Kristol was no American patriot. His love of Israel overrode any affection that he might have had for this country. Those passions and priorities were passed along to another generation of Israel-Firsters who see the United States in largely instrumental terms -- rather than as an end unto itself.

These very mean commentators simply betray their own ignorance and make the civil, decent and lovely intellect of Irving Kristol shine all the brighter.

RIP Dr. Kristol and thank you for your contributions to our nation's discourse. So too, thank you for sharing your own journey from left to right and making it visible to friend and foe alike.

Your charms will be missed in these days of empty punditry.

"Modern conservatism." "Conservative thinker." "Learning from Irving Kristol."

These are just three of the many oxymorons surrounding the late, "great" Irving Kristol.

After all, the goal of ALL conservative "thinkers" to convince mankind that we all need to march backward to the Stone Age (or if that's not possible, back to the Dark Ages) aka the "good, old days", when men were men and when women, dogs, donkeys and non-white men did whatever men told them to do.

In a word, when all was right with the world.

Of course, these "conservative thinkers" are the same people who think the Earth is flat and only 6,000 years old, and that it is possible to make the Earth spin not temporarily but permanently in the opposite direction with a mere word from the Creator.

1. Israel good.

2. Might makes right.

"Jews don't like big military budgets. But it is now an interest of the Jews to have a large and powerful military establishment in the United States... American Jews who care about the survival of the state of Israel have to say, no, we don't want to cut the military budget, it is important to keep that military budget big, so that we can defend Israel." ~ Irving Kristol

Thanks to the Kristols (Irving and Billy), a weak-minded American President was talked into an unnecessary, trillion-dollar war by the Kristol neo-cons -- all to "defend Israel."

Next up: Iran. (Like Iraq, it has been on the Kristol/Kagan/neo-con agenda since the late 1990s.)

Cowardice is one of the hallmarks of neo-conservatism. It's a "philosophy" for people who would never fight in a war but have no trouble sending other poor people's off kids to die for the sake of pipe dreams.

And on that note, everyone should be aware of just how cowardly Krauthammer is being in his eulogy for Kristol. No comments allowed. Think on that.

I refuse to cheer or celebrate the death of anyone and, as someone who has also lost a father whom I loved and learned much from, I empathize today with William Kristol. Losing a father hurts. That said, fathers die - that's the way of the world - and as Plato I think said, "In peacetime sons bury their fathers, and in wartime, fathers bury their sons." Thanks to Irving Kristol and his son after him - neither of whom served in the wars of their generation - many, many fathers have buried their sons, dead in Afghanistan and Iraq, wars which both Kristols cheered for, argued for, used deceit to promote and cheered the deceit that others used. Not a good legacy to leave behind.

He had a certain intelligence. I'm happy to count his opinions with those of Jerry Rubin, Abbie Hoffman and other extremists. It's good to have a second take on things even if that take is pretty nuts.

Weirdly enough, he seemed to be a supporter of Israel. Although not a member of OIPAC, he often gave much credit to the great war criminals of the 21st century.

In any event, one may hope that Iran can push the war criminals into the sea. We have put up with Israel for almost 65 years and that is truly enough.

Now I'm going to be called an anti-Semite. Fact is, all smart Israelis realize that they are killers and want to calm down.

The big idea that little Billy Kristol inherited from his daddy, who got it from Strauss, is the idea that governing a democracy requires lying. That's the thought that unifies and underlies the work of father and son. The son has applied this precept to an extent undreamed of by his father. That doesn't mean either of them deserves a dirge from the rest of us.

If there is a third generation, let's hope any further Kristols pass on taking up careers in punditry.

Of course a fat, dumpy hebrew goon like Kagan would write an article like this. It's like writing an extolling article about Joseph Stalin when Mikail Gorbachev has just passed away, claiming one was the progenitor of the other. Totally false, totally immoral, but that's what neo-cons like Kagan, Kristol Sr. and Kristol Jr. do. Hopefully, they will all be gone before long. No pleasant afterlife among the clouds and angels awaits them. The world will then be a better place.

Leaving aside Mr. Kagan's dubious implication that he's dedicated to "learning and integrity and a commitment to the well-being of society", the facts are that Mr. Kristol saw creating a new majority as more important than showing any sort of economic or fiscal responsibility. He acted accordingly, thus doing great damage to not only the American economic strength, but to the American political debate as well.

The hateful insults against a dead man seen here are highly distasteful. However, Mr. Kagan's idolization of a ruthless ideologue who couldn't be bothered with details like acts and his abject lack of actual knowledge about economics hamper his propaganda screeds in The Public Interest isn't much better.

Little claques of zionists, like all those in history.

Who never succeeded, who were detested, purged and hated everywhere they've ever surfaced, plotted--in every country in every century.

They try again. PC is the game, or was until Madoff...when suddenly, as now you see the stuff hitting the fan. More history.

When Ted Kennedy died all negative comment about him was muted- nothing was printed for example about his ferocious opposition to Reagan's anti-Soviet policy, a policy that led to the eventual demise of the USSR. The savagery of the posts printed here shows exactly how uncivil liberals can be, the self-styled tolerant and compassionate.

Many roads of bones they BUILT.

All so very Orwellian in both tone and substance. What might we say about such a man passing except "good riddance?"

The pawns in the Christian right are once again blindly following the agents of neo conservatism. The way to dissect their policies is to ask who will their policies benefit? Surely not the United States. We have made more enemies in the name of neo-conservatism than we have made friends.

This is a loss to political science and original thinking. It is sad that the Neocon movement has nothing to do with intellect. Irving overestimated the converts. They do nothing new (neo) and are conning instead of thinking. The result is "no!" for neo and con the voters for con. That's not new.

Another unlamentable Neoclown bites the dust. If only Freddie Hiatt and the Klawhammer would exit the political arena so gracefully.

The reputation of such a blind cheerleader of the bushes and of Regan cannot be modified by his mourning soulmates and apologists. He was a person who championed Neoclowndom, a pseudophilosophy which justified needless, useless wars and the squandering of public funds which could have been better used to help Americans.

To paraphrase the 9/12thers: "Bury Neoclownism with Kristol."

Here's a quote from Irving Kristol:

"It is a cold war that, for the last twenty-five years, has engaged my attention and energy, and continues to do so. There is no "after the Cold War" for me."

This is an amazing admission by Kristol, and remarkably similar to Orwell in 1984:

"The war is waged by the ruling group against its own subjects. And its object is not victory over Eurasia or Eastasia, but to keep the very structure of society intact."

In perpetual war, there is no "after the war". There is only during. Those like Irving Kristol who seek to keep a ruling plutocracy in place use perpetual war, openly advocated here by Kristol, proudly bragged about in fact, as a way to keep the fears stoked and the populace stirred up-- always fearful and angry at exactly the wrong people, never at the ones who are actually robbing them blind.

The tea party protesters are a perfect example. Health insurance corporations have enlisted Glenn Beck and other spokesmodels to stir them up and become angry against all of the phantoms-- minorities, immigrants, fictitious "death panels" and imperialist Russian "Czars"-- while actually supporting, without knowing it, the CEOs and corporate big shots who are the ones actually making their lives miserable with huge premium payments and little health care to show for it.

Perpetual war, misdirection, smoke and mirrors- yes, Irving Kristol was a master of it all.

I think the best way to honour Mr. Kristol's passing for for people raised culturally Christian to follow in his footsteps and to look out for their tribe—that is the broad-based Christian tribe. Just as there was nothing wrong with Mr. Kristol's placing Jewish concerns first; surely it is right for Christians to take the same approach. Before reading a newspaper, check to see it the owner is Christian. The same goes for a columnist. This isn't to say that Jewish columnists aren't worthwhile; only that perhaps they mayn ot have Christian well-being, let alone American, as their first priority. It may be that they are promoting the esoteric interests of a small country named Israel. Not that there is anything wrong with Jews supporting Israel – only that Christians should be aware of it before they send billions of tax dollars to Israel and receive in return their son in a body bag from Iraq for a war Christians really didn't need.

The problem with Kristol and Podhoretz is that they did stick with their religion (the more right-wing faction of it, anyway).

You are obviously unfamiliar with Podhoretz's article on why American Jews vote, overwhelmingly, Democratic.

According to Podhoretz, it is because they have lost their religion and have become secular, ethnic Jews.

You can read Podhoretz's article here: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203440104574402591116901498.html

As for Kristol, his attitude towards Judaism can begin to be gleaned from his comment, "The danger facing American Jews today is not that Christians want to persecute them but that Christians want to marry them."

A disquieting glimpse into Irving Kristol's "Intellectual Universe":

"There are different kinds of truths for different kinds of people. There are truths appropriate for children; truths that are appropriate for students; truths that are appropriate for educated adults; and truths that are appropriate for highly educated adults, and the notion that there should be one set of truths available to everyone is a modern democratic fallacy. It doesn't work." ~ Irving Kristol

I have little good to say about 'former communists' who see the light. The change of mind indicates the weakness of his thinking.

That would only remind readers of the embarassing subject.

It's no surprise that IK is being lauded here in Kagan's column, neither is it surprising to witness Kagan's defense of the indefensible antics of the biggest Israeli-AIPAC lobbyist ever to breathe air in America, and the man most responsible for the deaths of thousands of young Americans in a Middle Eastern dirthole.

Truly the epitome of the tail that wagged the dog, Kristol was held in extremely high regard in Tel Aviv, and he is a hero to the Likud party, the Knesset, and it's members.

I have no doubts at all that, through the efforts of such men as Kristol, the Likud will achieve it's aims of controlling US foreign policy -- and not just in Trotskiest 'Permanent Warfare' mode, but in banking, insurance, and Big Oil.

Today's modern Israel should be called for what it really is -- the remote command and control center for the United States of America -- US Policy Central HQ.

Think I'm joking? Don't laugh too hard -- these men now want war with Iran, and they will likely get their wish, so be prepared to see your children off to the nearest Bootcamp sometime soon after their graduation from High School.

Also, remember that as your son or daughter lay dying in a remore ME desert, there won't be amy Israeli soldiers coming to his/her rescue in Iraq OR Iran. Why is that? Don't ask, just do what you're told as an American. See that smile on Kagan's face?

Remember that, just like Iraq, Iran is the most vicious, most vile, most dangerous enemy the USA has ever faced... or is it really Israel itself?

This is from Friday's Charles Krauthammer column comments section.

Does He Lie? at 9/18/2009 2:45 AM EDT
What are you complaining about Krauthammer? Barack Obama is a ZOG front man, and he has a gun to his head in the form of a birth certificate.

Obama's Secretary of State is as servile towards Israel as any Soviet apparatchik was towards Stalin, and the Vice President comes close. Then there is Chief of Staff Rahm "Rahmbo" Emanuel.

Read "Senator Hillary Clinton's Remarks to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee" (AIPAC), February 1, 2007

http://www.radioislam.org/islam/english/jewishp/usa/hillaryclinton_aipac.htm

It is so embarrassing, it was scrubbed from the AIPAC website, but it can still be found on the Radio Islam website.

Listen to Sen. Biden on Shalom TV. He concludes by saying, "When I was a young Senator, I'd say, if I were a Jew I would be a Zionist. I am a Zionist. You don't have to be a Jew to be a Zionist."
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/2130127/sen_joe_biden_on_shalom_tv/

Finally, read about Rahm "Rahmbo" Emanuel: "The Enforcer."

The Enforcer, Rolling Stone, JOSHUA GREEN, Posted Oct 20, 2005 2:44 PM

http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/story/8091986/the_enforcer

I quote:

And there's the story of how, the night after Clinton was elected, Emanuel was so angry at the president's enemies that he stood up at a celebratory dinner with colleagues from the campaign, grabbed a steak knife and began rattling off a list of betrayers, shouting "Dead! . . . Dead! . . . Dead!" and plunging the knife into the table after every name.

I, too, am astonished by the viciousness of the comments from the left. I particularly like those who accuse Krystol of cowardice while posting anonymously. Could there be anything more self refuting than that?

The more vicious comments come from those who know the least. Krystol was a Democrat who approved of FDR, but not the direction of LBJ. Krystol was a classic liberal, as was Milton Friedman, who believed in personal liberty. During the 70's classic liberalism changed from personal liberty with a minimum of government to a system advocating a more powerful government while reducing personal liberty. That became, and still is, the new liberal mantra. Krystol, rightly, rebelled against that new "philosophy". Like Scoop Jackson, he believed in a strong national defense.

Krystol is an example of a committed liberal who watched as his party completely changed the definition of liberalism by turning it on its head. The change has ended up 180 degrees out of synch with the original definition. As such, today's liberals are so ashamed of the label "liberal", they have abandoned it in favor of "progressive". But, we know they stand for big government, little liberty.

I suggest (and I know it won't be taken) a reading of some of Krystol's writings. One short, but interesting one is a commentary on an FA Hayek book

http://www.commentarymagazine.com/viewarticle.cfm/the-constitution-of-liberty--by-f--a--hayek-3213?search=1

Both the book and the review emphasis the philosophy of liberty espoused by classic liberals.

I suffered through a 1995 interview with this individual on CSpan yesterday. He was bland, of pedestrian vocabulary, uninteresting, had zero gems of wisdom and bored the hell out of viewers with his tales of yesteryear, all the while seemingly incapable of defending the twisted front of a philosophy used to couple zionists with the always war loving right wing.

Once lowered into the hole, it is safe to assume there were familiar hands reaching up to drag him further down to that great gathering of war profitters, chaos mongerers and trickle-downers who were his cronies.

To be a Jew is to belong to a religion. Most American Jews are good Americans.

To be a zionist is to claim Jews are a race, and that race is superior to all others.

This creature did as much damage to Jews as he did to America.
