'The lady is good' but Sarah Palin isn't ready to be president

When it comes to Sarah Palin's political style, David Broder and I agree. "The lady is good," as Broder writes today. But what of her political substance? He doesn't go anywhere near it. Probably because, with very few exceptions, Palin doesn't have any.

"I want to speak up for the American people and say: No, we really do have some good common-sense solutions," Palin told Chris Wallace of Fox News Sunday. "I can be a messenger for that." Mr. Broder called that response "a pitch-perfect recital of the populist message that has worked in campaigns past." Nevermind that Palin neither enumerated what those common-sense solutions are nor went into any depth beyond soundbites on the host of issues she held forth on at the Tea Party convention in Nashville.

As Chris Cillizza wrote in "The Fix" earlier this week, "Soundbites -- even when delivered with the skill Palin displays -- are not, in the long run, a substitute for substance and won't persuade those who have doubts about her that they misjudged her abilities." And those doubts are hurting her.

According to the latest Washington Post/ABC News poll, "There is a growing sense that the former Alaska governor is not qualified to serve as president, with more than seven in 10 Americans now saying she is unqualified, up from 60 percent in a November survey." The poll notes that "Even among Republicans, a majority now say Palin lacks the qualifications necessary for the White House." And what of conservatives? The results show that 45 percent of them don't think Palin is qualified for the presidency. That's down from 66 percent last fall.

Broder is right to tell us to "[t]ake Sarah Palin seriously." But as those poll numbers and Cillizza's latest blog attest, the Palin for president boomlet is "overblown."

Capehart: No, Palin isn't ready to be president

......Yeah and it's really clear now that Obama, the Great Divider-in-Chief, clearly isn't qualified to be our current POTUS.

Let's fix this in 2012.........

Didn't Tancredo say at the Tea Party convention that there should be a literacy test for voting? How would Sarah ever pass it? And, since she could not, would that mean she is ineligible to run? All good questions for those with tea for brains.

You give Obama one year to overturn a major depression and you gave the GOP 8 years. They took the keys. We have two wars. A major depression and some of you want to hand the keys to Palin? Have you been asleep the last year. Can you imagine her grasping the complex issues we face or going face to face with leaders of other countries. She has the vocabulary of a high schooler. Really. Take her seriously at your peril. GOP run her as President and face a defeat of major proportions. How is anyone taking her seriously is beyond me.

The plan has worked to perfection. First we lower the average IQ of the American Population by 20 points by overcrowding our K-12 public school system and reducing the amount of money spent for each child. Then we make it so expensive to get a college education that only a handful of determined individuals (and of course children of the Old Guard) have the tenacity, money and perseverance to make it to a graduate degree. Next we fully implement George Orwells "doublespeak", you know "good" is "bad", "up" is "down", we'll start calling our guided missiles "Peacekeepers" and deny evolution in our school textbooks. The final blow and completion of our plan and long term goals will be accomplished when we allow the Supreme Court to "select" a man, as President of the United States, who has the understanding of a weasel and the competence of 3 year old. The country should be financially destroyed within 8 years while the military-industrial-complex reaps ungodly profits. However, we will never allow a woman of Sarah Palin's obvious short-comings to ascend to the highest office in the land, NO MATTER WHAT!

My first reaction to the latest attack on Palin by Gibbs (WH spokesperson)and some of the MSM was anger and disgust that this is what the WH allows to represent itself. Then I read Brodr's column and a Time column by Joe Kline stating the obvious - she is popular - and realized that the WH game is to demean her whilst "she is still in the cradle". The WH had better realize the non-elitist, Reagan democrats are fed up with the sophomoric behavior from the likes of Gibbs, Emanuel, Biden, Pelosi, Reid, Frank, et al. I wasn't even paying attention to the Tea Party movement until the WH minions became so obsessed with Palin. They tout a new number - 45% disapprove of Palin - that is very close to the number that disapprove of Obama (~50%) and he is still the darling of the MSM. Just what would be the disapproval numbers for Obama and Palin if a poll were taken only from the middle electorate - i.e. eliminate both left and right wing voters? Palin has just begun her charge into the "political light" and perhaps her approval will improve, perhaps not. But for sure she is saying what the "real middle America" is thinking and saying to their friends. Personally she will need some more experience but has enough time to get there. Do I like what I hear from her - "you betcha"!

As interesting as Sarah Palin may be to some, I cannot understand how anyone could ever consider her informed enough to be president. The last year has been tough on many Americans and there is a lot of fear and anger. Keep in mind two things. The Republicans put us where we are today through 8 years of incompetence and failed ideology. And, no matter how slowly the economy recovers under Barack Obama, if he had lost the election to McCain and Palin we would be very much worse off today.

Mr. Capehart, I do believe Mr. Broder is a bit hung up on Ms. Palin's Hollywood star like appeal to some voters, which she undoubtedly has. But, as many know there is no THERE in THERE. She goes well beyond the premise of being an anti-intellectual. Saying "golly, shucks and kinda" don't lead to many solutions of national problems. She is totally unprepared to handle the rigors of the White House, with either thought or stamina. She quit as the governor of Alaska with 2 years left on her contract and somehow we are supposed to believe she can do better in Washington? Alaska is not exactly California or New York in economic firepower. Her regressive achievement record is a real detriment to her electability. You don't walk out as president of a small business only to turn around as ask to be CEO of a major corporation. That goes against the whole Republican corporate credo image thing. Being able to stoke the fire of an audience of anti-government abolitionists doesn't automatically make you presidential material. It's hard to take her too seriously.

Posted by: citizen4truth1 | February 11, 2010 4:54 PM | Report abuse

I would LOVE to see the Republicans nominate Palin in 2012. But they won't. Those in the party who still huddle and talk strategy instead of barking at the moon know that Palin could not win, because her appeal does not extend beyond her nut base (with the apparent exception of David Broder). Instead, she's a polarizing lightning rod, energizing a group of people who might otherwise be in a mental hospital, but who will write her name in if she's not on the ticket. That will split the Republican vote. The self-declared Republican base makes up less than 30% of the electorate, and only wildly-successful GOTV campaigns have made them a threat in the past. It's the independents that count, and they are not impressed with the Moose Whisperer.

And I think that David Broder is bordering on malpractice with his column. Saying that "the lady is good, " even if it is just meant to refer to her skill at riding a populist wave, will be misused by her followers to imply a stamp of approval from David Broder for her candidacy. Unless he really means to say that she "would be good" in her capacity as an elected official, I think he needs to be more careful.

Qualified to be President? Hillary was called the smartest woman in the world. Yet, the people decided she wasn't qualified enough to be President. There goes your theory about qualifications of being President. There is clearly a difference in definition to being qualified in the Republican and Democrat party. If you hate this country, hate capitalism, hate the free market, call yourself a progressive, grants terrorist American rights, is tone deaf to the people, calls corruption in the House and the Senate legislature procedure, tries to force health down the throats of the people, holds closed meetings behind closed doors with special deals, treats our allies like the enemies, attacks private citizens and news organization for disagreeing with President Obama, wants to rebuild the American society into a socialist then your qualified to be President in the eyes of the Democrats and the MSM. I say MSM because you do represent the MSM don't you.

What utter nonsense, Capeheart, to suggest that "readiness" is the problem with Palin. The substance, when actually discussed, is the same substance that Bush constantly proposed: Ending Social Security, health care, public education, Medicare and privatise everything. This is called "freedom" and "entrepeneurism." Government is defined as a "handout program" when it pleases her to say so; "our traditional conservative values" when it comes to big government military contracts, corporate giveaways and oil depletion allowances.

This group is being groomed and set up to run as the Right Wing answer to Obama and the dumbs, either in the Republican party or as the Murdoch FOX's front party (Tea Bag independents NOT). In fact when we look at the other Free Mason's who are slated to run (like Mike) it's beginning to look like a bad made for TV conspiracy (More FOX?).

This woman should be home taking care of that baby she had. He will need lots of care and love and I can't see her giving it to him. I guess the older daughter is caring for him and her own baby. Now, what is wrong with reading a speech from a telepromper? Bush did it,and he would never be able to remember what he wanted to say. Remember how he talked with the media without the words in front of him. So lets leave our President alone and let him run the country the best he can, with what was left for him. It was sure a republician mess when he took office. Give him time, Rome wasn't built in a day. He has my support.

Palin was elected governor of a state, arguably one of the more important states in the Union, given its energy reserves. She was elected by the people of the state.
Obama was elected to a Senate seat. He served one term.

Palin had to work with a state legislature to negotiate a budget.
Obama, as a junior senator, had to support the legislation of more-senior senators in his caucus.

Obama was part of what has been called "the most exclusive club in America," the 100 members of the Senate.
Palin was part of an even smaller, more exclusive group, the 50 governors of the United States.

She may be politically unsophisticated, but who has more actual leadership experience?

That is not serious consideration of her; that is simply a fact of politics in the U.S. As long as you keep cramming her down our throats, people will consider her. But she is not a serious person and should never be president. Unfortunately, being a serious, intelligent person is no longer a qualification for president. Look at the previous eight years.

Obama was part of what has been called "the most exclusive club in America," the 100 members of the Senate.
Palin was part of an even smaller, more exclusive group, the 50 governors of the United States.

She may be politically unsophisticated, but who has more actual leadership experience?

I and many like me do not know the names of the leaders of foreign countries, and without consulting a map, don't have a clear idea of their borders or even what that MEANS! Nor do I understand how Wall Street Works. I have never owned stock in ANYTHING. But I know what I WANT and so does SHE. Let's face it, there has never been a president that could function without a plethora of people under them advising them on their every MOVE. She's a breath of FRESH AIR folks. Whether or not Sarah Palin is ready to be President is not up to the MSM. Let the voters decide. Many of the voters will vote for Palin just to spite the MSM and the looney left moonbats--is that redundant?

Posted by: amazd | February 11, 2010 4:10 PM
??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Which shows just how ignorant some people can be. That is the reason this country is in the shape it is in today. Those gullible people succumbed to the fear, scare and smear tactics to get people to vote for them. Two unpaid wars, a collapsed economy, housing and job markets and Republicans eagerly blaming President Obama and Democrats for all of their failures during the past eight years. All the while Republicans are doing absolutely nothing to help bring the country back and everything to try and see President Obama and the country fail. See, Republicans think that once the country fails you gullible people will flock back to them, vote against your own best interest and allow Republicans to complete the destruction they started under George Bush. The sad thing is , people are so inpatient they are falling for the ruse.
Now, since some of you are willing to vote for Sarah Palin just to spite the MSN, what does that tell you about how you feel about America? Why do you all hate America?

Quite amused to see so many Palin apologists try and compare her to President Obama. He has a degree from Columbia. He is a graduate of Harvard Law. He served his state in the legislature, where he didn't quit to go on the rubber chicken circuit and the fox opinion channel. I will not take her serious until she takes the American public serious. When she starts doing interviews with people outside the fox news spectrum, when she develops real policy positions then maybe, but I don't believe she is capable.

Whew! So much name calling. I wonder what percentage of voters thought Obama was qualified to be president nearly three years before the election and one year after his election to the senate.

If Palin decides to run for the nomination she will almost surely have to take part in numerous debates and she will either be able to discuss both policy and political principals or she won't. Until then the majority of voters will probably not make a final decision on Palin's ability and qualifications.

Posted by: LouBear | February 11, 2010 8:49 PM | Report abuse

What seems to be missing from any pro-Palin comment is the reality that she cannot just rely on the same old tired bromides. She must be able to articulate something other than what can be scribbled on her hand-o-prompter. She will go down in flames in the primary debates.

It is clear now, with the success of her book and her relationship with the Tea party, that she made an intelligent choice stepping down as governor. If you want to call her a quitter, I cannot stop you. But don't forget that then the term "quitter" will also apply to the three Democrats I mentioned.

The smart guy in the movie is portraied as a nerdy geek! Sarah Palin apeals to those underachievers in the coutry as one of their own. She pays lip serice to big problems with canned slogans and no solutions.

Our society is changing and one only has to turn on the TV and see the types of shows that appeal to all the fringe elements in the American land. Cheap sleazy reality shows, cheaters and bridezillas.

Where are the good comedies, love stories of years gone by? Just as corporations race to the bottom on outsourcing, TV and media looking for entertainment on the cheap foster trash on the American public.

Cable TV once touted as commercial free, now charges viewers to watch paid programming and has added more commercials per hour so that actual content is a faction of what it used to be!

There is no prime time CSPAN or Frontline to explain the issues to the American people so the fringe with the loudest voices get heard such as the Teabaggers.

From twotimetuna:

"Sarah Palin is much smarter than obozo the teleprompter. Give me a break. She would win any debate against this purple lipped community organizer. Show us his grades.

Anytime, any black man gets in a high office or position, it has to be because of affirmative action. Until affirmative action and entitlements are gone, that's how black people will be perceived. Would you want your DOCTOR or LAWYER to be BLACK?"

This right here, folks, is the real sentiments of the Teabaggers and their Teabagging Party. I just hope to God that this reprehensible portion of the population represents, at most, 15-20% of the electorate. If you've noticed, most of them are old and not long for this world, so hopefully by natural decline this movement will extinguish itself pretty soon.

We have a good example in history if populistic politicians are favoured.
Adolf Hitler was holding pure populistic speeches and got a lot of votes.
He was also secretely supported by the German industry, because he spoke against the socialists and the influence of the Jews.
In the end he created the biggest desaster in history.

When a human body is cut open what does one see? Black? White? Blue?? It is the same red blood and organs inside. Likewise, race has nothing to do with intellect or ability. And Pres. Obama has time and again shown to be a smart man even by the most pessimistic critical standards. He can at least articulate facts as could be seen from the way he handled Republicans following State of the Union address. Should Palin the hillbilly become the Pres. we will have daily doze of evening fun and embarrassment. The World will certainly have a talking point on how stupid America has become over the years, even as other nations such as China and India appoint much smarter people has heads of state.

I have asked this question every day I think of it, and I've never gotten an answer yet.

Which President or national TV personality who has to deal with important issues and who could read, did NOT use a teleprompter since its inception??

I know the political entertainers, who THINK for lots of these bloggers, like to single out Obama, but I'm almost 70 y/o, and I cannot remember a single recent President who did NOT use a teleprompter unless he couldn't read because of dyslexia or some excuse.

I never heard of ANY of them writing crib notes on their hand, like a gradeschooler!

I surely would like an answer because the idiots want other idiots to believe Obama is the first and only!!

Maerzie, you know and I know that the teleprompter charge is baseless, but it still works because a lot of folks had never heard of a teleprompter before and were willing to be convinced that Obama is unable to speak publicly without one. It's just as ridiculous as the claims that he was born in Kenya, or that he is a secret Muslim/Communist/Socialist/Fascist, but there are plenty of people ready to believe everything negative thing they hear. I'm just wondering what's next, after the teleprompter campaign has run its course.

I am a huge supporter of Palin for President. Don't attack me, here me out as I have read your posts.

I believe we need someone to get rid of the "Big Government' mentality. Look at what she did the first week as governer: Got rid of the personal chef, took pay cut and reduced pay for her staff BEFORE cutting programs, etc. She refused to use the Gov jet when a cheaper means was availaible. She went up against the "Oil" companies which in turn resulted of many "Crooks" to lose their jobs and some even serving prison time for ethics violations.

Is she qualified to be President? What is the job description? American politicians has become (long ago) a career as we all know. That is the problem. They don't vote and work for the people. They are comprimised by $$$$.

We need her to clean up our politics as it is today. She will save $$$ and cut so many un-needed expenses! Some have commented that she has language of a high schooler. So what? She is more of a "People" leader than Obama, Bush, Bush, Clinton, and so on... She will truly work for US!

I don't like Obama and his decisions thus far. HOWEVER. I know and truly believe he won't do our counrty any damage worse off than what it was before, but he hasn't made ANY CHANGE as he promised. You don't need a year to prove "Change".

Same would be for Palin, except she will Clean-Up Washington! She won't keep reaching into our already EMPTY wallets and hand the $$$ to AIG, GMC, etc. I despise that we did that (Bush started it!, and I voted for him).

All those who are against Palin for President. Do you REALLY believe she did a bad job as Governer? They loved her until the election. The McCain campaign team screwed that up!

She is s true American and the best "People" politician I have ever seen. She is against Abortion, HOWEVER... if the people want it to be legal, she will vote what the people wnat!!! She proved that time and time again in Alaska! That is a TRUE politician and the only way our government will redeem itself.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you might at least give her a more than what the media throws out there.

BTW: Who cares if she wrote "notes" on her hand??? Is that a BAD thing? Heck, I use a notepad all the time when talking to my Soldiers. Does that make me a bad leader?

Really folks. That is a personal, non-important issue! Let's leave the BS out and get ourselves some leaders that CARE for the People.

Palin "Quit" for great reasons. I was on that boat of calling her a quitter before I read her book (Skip the first 3 chapters). She did the honorable thing and was doing it for the good of the "People". They were spending tons of time and $$$ dealing with all the accusations and inquiries accusing her of "Ethics", violations, etc. If those accusations were true, I would not be a Palin supporter by all means.

They, themselves, HOPE to take over the Republican party and CHANGE the ways of Washington. Don't they "get" that?

---

Sarah Palin is THE stereotypical middle school MEAN GIRL. She uses the POWER of POPULARITY to punish those who aren't currently under her persuasion - in her private club.

She misrepresents herself - playing the old switcheroo and denying her past pursuits and exploits. (i.e., "I never wanted no stinking bridge to nowhere ...")

---

And then I have to wonder, ... why would Rush Limbaugh promote a "feminazi" to his ditto-heads? Doesn't this go against his conventional (lack of) wisdom?

Hath Hell frozen over? Is Alice back in Wonderland? Things certainly appear to be mixed up.
