Eric Massa did himself no favors on Glenn Beck

Glenn Beck said it all when he concluded his hour-long ramble of an interview with former congressman Eric Massa (D-N.Y.). He looked right at the camera and apologized to the nation. "America," the exasperated Beck said, "I have wasted your time. I have wasted an hour of your time." Ain't that the truth. Anyone who thought the one-term congressman was a one-man wrecking ball for the Democratic Party and White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel should be disabused of that fantasy.

Massa backtracked on the conspiracy theory that the Democratic leadership forced him out. "I wasn't forced out," he said. "I forced myself out." And with that went what little credibility he had in his David vs. Goliath story.

Massa's confession came at the top of one of the most bizarre interviews I've ever seen. He was incoherent, inconsistent and in need of some serious media coaching. As time went along, I couldn't help but think that the people of his former district must be relieved this erratic man is gone. They'll get to vote for a new representative after embattled New York Gov. David Paterson (D) sets the date for a special election.

At the top of his show, Beck asked viewers to ask themselves three questions while they watched his Massa interview. Is there anything new to his charges? Do you believe what he says about corruption? Do you believe what he says about himself? Massa shed no new light. His charges of corruption went unsubstantiated, despite repeated pleas by Beck to deliver the goods. And given the report that the ethics committee is looking into allegations that Massa groped at least three male staffers, it's very difficult to believe what he says about himself. After watching him, it's not clear to me that he even knows who he is.

How disappointing for Mormon Elder Beck who, characteristically embraced a closeted gay Congressman to bash the Democrats with and didn't get a kiss back.

It wasn't wasted time. It backfired on Beck and Massa and made all of the right wing-nuts look stupid for trying to make a case against the Democrats using a lunatic as a foil.

So sad. Not.

Glen Beck and the rest of them knew, or should have known, going into it the guy's grasping at straws. At least he pulled himself together enough to say what the truth is: "I wasn't forced out. I forced myself out."

I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry. This guy is in the middle of a major meltdown/psych break, and has decided to put himself on display for everyone to see.

The GOP has to be in seventh heaven with the campaign footage they will get out of this disasterous interview....just days after Rangel's fall from grace. I haven't seen a political party collapse like this since Watergate.

Yeah, and one has to wonder did Republicans worry about all of their Congress people after their scandals? Did one wonder about all Republicans after the scandalous two terms of George Bush? Well actually they did and they elected Democrats.

It is amazing watching Republicans acting as if they are all perfect and have never done a thing wrong. Larry Craig, Mark Foley Governor Sanford, the list goes on and on. Guess what, Republicans are just as corrupt. Why do Republicans like to live in a fantasy world?

Anyone who would be a member of either the Republicans or the Democrats should not be allowed to vote. Members of either party should not be admired, they have stopped thinking, and they don't really believe in freedom. What a sad condition for our country. Please everyone, register as an independent and vote for anyone who is not associated with one of the two main political parties. Vote with your mind, not with your emotional attachment to an unthinking mob.

Massa is a conservative democrat from an erstwhile republican district. He epitomizes conservatives. Conservatives, and their talkshow hosts have already made this country look like a third world country. If they succeed in changing our congress even god can not help America. Mostly conservatives and some extreme liberals are ruining this country. People with commonsense should get rid of them by voting them out. Get off your backs and support President Obama. He seems to be last best hope for this country, otherwise we will all fail as a country.

Posted by: Realist17 | March 9, 2010 9:07 PM | Report abuse

I disagree. Although he rambled and admitted strange things strangely, he DID call Beck out for calling people names. To see that on Beck's show, well, that WAS one place Massa did well.

Yes, Massa is incoherent. Yes we are sad he was voted into our district. But, we're happy we got rid of him. We only wish we could get rid of Obama and his incoherent people and the other clowns that we elected in 2008.

Maybe Obama can go tour the 51st thru the 57th states he has been so interested in. He can take his red and blue pills with him for those people he doesn't think should be allowed operations, whoever they are (talk about an Alice-in-wonderland mentality!).

So what is it with republikans (even those who changed over to the democrates 4 years ago like Massa), that can’t keep their hands off people, especially same the sex?

Is this the “family values” and “compassionate” conservatism the shrub talked about? What is it with the republikans that the very things they denounce, they are all about? And tell me about those airport bathrooms, OK?

Is it a serious psychological case of denial? Or are they just pathological liars? Is it the religion they practice that drives them mad?

Why are the republikans so... warped? Beck, Limpbag (previous addicts), religious nuts like dobson, roberts, etc... wow, real sickos...

This guy is sad evidence of how really corrupt politicians get protected in DC. As long as you are willing to be a club to be used to smash one party or the other, all your sins are forgiven. A really reprehensible person--a Democrat, indeed!--one who was abandoned by his own party for his disgusting behavior, is picked up by Beck simply because he was against health care reform. Sadly for him, he couldn't pull it off and failed to play the part. Now Beck has the gall to act horrified at a left-wing creep whom he was about to defend to his viewers. I wonder if all the Beck fans who put Massa's pic on their Facebook profile are in the least ashamed. Sadly, probably not--they'll blame everyone but themselves that they prematurely lionized someone whom all the facts condemned.

I think Beck did okay (he is no O'Reilly). He pointed out he hadn't met Massa before that day and had only briefly talked to him on the phone. It seemed that Massa had indicated he was ready to give up the dirt and name names and he didn't. Beck tried to get the information and at the same time be respectful (at least as much as he could) to the Congressman. The idiot in this was Massa. He looked like a loon who couldn't keep a coherent thought. He skipped around and evaded. Had it been O'Reilly, he would have just shut the interview down when Massa started evading the questions.

One of the things I did get from this (and I didn't watch it, I listened on XM) was when Beck mentioned Massa looking him in the eye the whole time when he was telling about Rahm and his playing around was not sexual. Either he is a good liar (is that a prerequisite for Congress?) or he was telling the truth about the 5 hours a day asking for money. We do need some real reform there.

I also think lobbying should be outlawed. Every bill should stand on it's own merits without riders or amendments. If something can't stand on it's own or amendments need to be added to the bill, it is time to re-write it bill. If amendments are allowed, they must be directly related to the bill.

That is why I would never make it in politics, I use common sense.

Massa's reasons for objecting to "Obamacare" are actually the dirty little secret of our corporate media. He, like most Americans, wants either a public option or to go further to a single payer. Obama's compromise plan (ironically with a completely uncompromising GOP) simply doesn't go far enough to get us out from under the yoke of this parasitic corporate-welfare system that siphons money from consumers to keep executives in Jaguars and Armani (and congress critters in donations).

America wants a public option. Even 73% of our doctors agree. Wake up, tea baggers. You're in the thrall of an insurance industry that's laughing behind your back all the way to the bank.

*******************************************What a moron. There's no mention of political affiliation among non-payers. You just assign the whole thing to the Democrats. You couldn't supported that assumption in million years.

I pay taxes. This year and every one of the forty-three previous years of my employment.

You haven't got squat. Go away, loser.

Thanks for more sassy teenage girl insults st50taw. Very becoming for a person in their 60s. Despite you're inability to follow a simple line of logic I won't return the favor, but as long as you haven't stomped up to your bedroom and slammed the door while yelling, "I just hate him!" I will do you the favor of breaking it down to a more facile level that hopefully you are capable of understanding.

I was referring to the political affiliations of the politicians who push big government and entitlement programs. They are undeniably predominantly from the left (from Wilson, to FDR, to Johnson, Obama ) and they have succeeded. We are now at the tipping point where in short order more will be takers then givers. Taxes rates for the middle class will jump through the roof soon. When 60-70% of you income is confiscated and redistributed why work? (see: Greece). Socialism doesn't work.

No I don't have any stats on the voting proclivities of welfare teet suckers, but is it such a stretch to assume that those to push for more and more welfare benefits are in same the party of the recipients? (hint: no)

If your view is purely selfish "as long as I get mine who cares" then at least be honest about it. But also be honest enough to admit that your grandchildren are screwed due to the entitlement culture you apparently embrace.

Hopefully this note hasn't resulted in another sexegenarian hissy fit.
