Extreme Tea Party sentiments have reach

The reaction to my last post on Tea Party America was predictable. There were three comments that caught my eye that highlight why President Obama's rallying cry to the spirit of America fall's on deaf ears among many in the Tea Party movement. More frightening, their deep mistrust of him is more widely shared than you'd imagine.

"His aspiration is to socialize the U.S., though he'd probably settle for remaking it in Europe's image in the short term," wrote stratman1. "That's why he doesn't resonate with many of us."

"Obama is a Marxist and he wants the US to be a Marxist state just like his real home Kenya is becoming. He is a Manchurian candidate," scribbled stephenlubinsbcglobalnet. "No-one knows where he was born, who his parents are, or anything else about him. But we do know he is a Marxist who is destroying this coutnry.[sic]"

"NoBama hates this country and everything for which it stands," noted PhanMan69. "He is ashamed and apologizes for the leadership that the US has provided the world. He does not believe that America is exceptional and is doing his best to grind what's left into the ground...No President of mine takes the oath of office and then shreds the Constitution that he swore to defend."

Vitriol is not wholly owned by the right. There are extremists on the left who have called former president George W. Bush a war criminal, a fascist and worse. But their thunder against the Republican president never had the edgy tinge that we're seeing from the extremes of the Tea Party movement. Their boisterous displays of anger during the health-care votes at the Capitol last weekend -- egged on by irresponsible lawmakers -- is a worrisome escalation.

John Avlon, one-time speechwriter to former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and a latter-day Paul Revere, has been warning one and all about the far-right extremists who are taking over the Republican Party and polluting political discourse. His latest piece for The Daily Beast, "Scary New GOP Poll," puts numbers behind the concern and shows how wide the mistrust of Obama is.

* 67 percent of Republicans (and 40 percent of Americans overall) believe that Obama is a socialist.
* 57 percent of Republicans (32 percent overall) believe that Obama is a Muslim
* 45 percent of Republicans (25 percent overall) agree with the Birthers in their belief that Obama was "not born in the United States and so is not eligible to be president"
* 38 percent of Republicans (20 percent overall) say that Obama is "doing many of the things that Hitler did"
* 24 percent of Republicans (14 percent overall) say that Obama "may be the Antichrist."

That last data point would be hilarious were the implications not so scary. And rather than speak out against those who foment these corrosive views, "leaders" in the Republican Party are content to feed and ride the wave of discontent for short-term political gain. As David Frum wrote in his Waterloo blog posting on Sunday, by mobilizing supporters "with hysterical accusations and pseudo-information, overheated talk has made it impossible for representatives to represent and elected leaders to lead." This is too high a price to pay for a nation that desperately needs leadership from both sides of the aisle to solve problems that can no longer be ignored.

The real problem is not the comical views of a lot of people - it's where they are headed. Nobody seems willing to confront the fact that mainstream politicians who either do not refute these sorts of stories or who implicitly encourage them are encouraging violence. The first steps to violence are depersonalization and demonization. This needs to stop.

The Tea partiers and the other fringe groups should be shunned and ostracized until they explicitly renounce violence.

The "antichrist" belief is why we need to pull the tax exemptions from these Churches.

People did not come to believe this on their own. There are religious leaders instructing them in these beliefs and these are political beliefs not religious ones and thus should not qualify for tax exemption.

Mr. Capehart, at least you identified the credibility of the poll for us as a GOP poll which says it all....there is simply no documentation whatsoever that 40% of Americans think President Obama is a Socialist. Further it's not "leftist extremists" that consider George W. Bush a War Criminal, he is so because of his determination to torture, as is Condoleeza Rice, and particularly Dick Cheney. This is not a grey area, both have stated publicly that they authorized torture, even though, initially, Bush, with great righteous indignation in his voice pounded his podium on the White house lawn and exclaimed "let me make this clear, WE DON'T TORTURE", when he knew we did and had signed the papers to allow it and also knew of the meetings in the very basement of the White house during which Cheney, Rumsfeld, Addington and others, chaired by Rice, discussed in detail what they were going to authorize by way of torture including waterboarding. Why don't you include a Democratic as well as an Independents Poll, hell why not even throw in a Christian Poll while your at it...

Posted by: Watcher1 | March 24, 2010 10:05 AM | Report abuse

Those poll numbers are ridiculous. This is believable only to someone who lives in a pretty narrow circle and makes sure nothing upsets their prejudices. If anyone thinks that 25% of any large group thinks Obama is the AntiChrist, they are completely nuts. This column is simply playing on anti-white, anti-conservative caricatures. It's easier to turn up the heat than shine a light. It let's Mr. Capehart get through another deadline and keep his job.

I consider myself a Tea Party person and the one thing we all have in common is a strong commitment to protecting the Constitution. We believe that the government is limited to it's Constitutionally enumerated powers, and we want to protect our rights under the Constitution.

We want a fiscally responsible government. Those are issues that I think we all agree on.

We also have not and do not advocate violence. Our opponents like to scare people with the supposed threat of violence we represent, but where is the evidence? Any violence that occurs at our rallies has actually been directed at us, with one person even having a finger bitten off by a union thug!

The media is all too happy to publish unsubstantiated reports of our racism, homophobia, etc but where is the evidence??? With 25,000+ people in DC on Saturday and all the press coverage, where is the evidence that anything bad actually happened?

Here's one video clip that's out there. Supposedly, you hear a racial epithet 45 seconds in. I happen to be standing on the very corner where the Congressman walks by, as were several policemen.

I didn't hear anything and if I didn't hear it, neither did the Congressman because I was closer to the crowd than he was. Nor was anyone spat upon. The police would have arrested anyone who did anything like that. It's nonsense.

Here's the clip:

http://www.resistnet.com/video/video/show?id=2600775%3AVideo%3A2111...

Are we angry? Hell yes! Violent? No.

Come on Mr. Capeheart! Of course I share President Obama's sentiment in general but not as it pertains to the topic of that day - the new healthcare bill.
If doing difficult things means ramming through an unpopular bill, than that is not a call to "the people" to do something difficult. It is a call only to his Washingtonian supporters.
If his call were in relation to a fiscal belt tightening to reduce our ballooning national debt, I'd say right on!
And to suggest that there is more vitriol in the Tea Party movement than what we saw from the left during Bush's time in office is just naive. Ridiculous. There were idiots calling for his assasination! I didn't hear the media outrage proclaiming those people as indicative of the anti-Bush movement.

The Harris Poll should be ignored. Take a look at the fine print about the poll's methodology. You had to be an on-line sort of person to get into the pool of respondents. Then you had to sign up for Harris-Online to be in the pool of respondents. This poll is no more nationally representative of the views of the American populace than a sample constructed by walking up to people in a mall on Saturday in Omaha, Nebraska.

Are there people who hold nutty views in this country? Sure. Are they on the right of our political continuum? Sure. Are they on the left? Sure. Does this poll tell us anything about the size of those groups. Heck no. What terrible reporting to spread this stuff as accurate. Come on folks.

None of this is rocket science. Americans that "want their country back" are just longing for the good old days of George Wallace and electric cattle prods. Every item in the survey ( the Anti-Christ, a Socialist, a Kenyan) is simply a way to refute the legitimacy of the President's administration. Some people simply can't deal with the notion that a man who isn't a WASP could actually be the President.

I have a message for Senator John Boehner and the sad republican's in Washington who defied and continue to defy the will of the American people.

While you think your kind of politics is going to win your party favor in 2010 and 2012 I believe as a show of honesty and things to come that Mr. Boehner and his family start packing NOW, because the American people will eventually catch up with HOW many dishonest tactics the republican's in Washington tried to distribute and sell to honest hard working class families.

I don't think the health care bill is a work of art just yet but I do believe it served notice to big insurance that they now have to play ball or new small insurance companies will get many of the 31 million soon to be insureds of America!!

Yikes. Harris is a reputable polling agency, and those numbers are indeed scary. Add them to the gun movement and if I were Michelle Obama I would have trouble sleeping at night.

The mainstream Republican leaders (such as they are) do indeed need to get moving to calm things down instead of whipping them up.

And dammit, it's time for the advertisers on Fox News to show some public spirit, and pull the plug on the hate-mongering propaganda that has instilled these ideas. People don't make up this stuff out of their own heads and imaginations: it's preached to them.

Ha ha. Won't happen. I do indeed fear for my country.

Keep it up, Mr. Capehart, and may many others' voices join you. I hope it's not too late; the genie is out of the bottle and it's bloody hard to put it back in.

The real problem is that good decent men and women are being provoked for political gain by the Republican party.
Something terrible is going to happen soon: they're already throwing bricks through office windows. Someone will be assassinated or someone will take a shot at the President.
And those Republican "leaders" and their hate talk radio/television network Fox will act shocked and deplore the event.
When, in actuality, they might as well have been the ones pulling the trigger.

Observations. I have heard for the first time in over half a century of life the President of the United States referred to as Mr. followed by his family name and not Mr. President. This, by not only persons in position of responsibility, but by various news agencies. When you can recall the recent embarrassment suffered by the Supreme Court Justices at the hands of the President I suggest you hold that in mind for when the Health Care law goes before these same Justices. Think of all the backroom bribery that had to be done to members of the Presidents own party in order to get the Health Care bill passed. Keep in mind his party controls congress. I have heard nothing that limits premiums levied by Health Care companies nor have I heard a word regarding the reason for the increase in health care costs. How many times do we need to pay off a stethoscope? How many more bonuses can we afford to pay to incompetent performers? Where was President Obama’s mother when he was born? Show us her passport. Let’s kill the birth debate once and for all. I see signs, far too many signs, that our President is ineffective in a government under his party’s control. What has he REALLY accomplished in his first year?

There is an old saying that the squeaky wheel gets the grease. All the Republican Party and Tea Party are right now are squeaky wheels. They will get lots of attention for their antics (and that's what they are) but they will ultimately shoot themselves in the foot. I am sick to death of people talking about what "the American people" want as if we are some huge monolithic group who all want the same thing. It's quite obvious we are not! I am a teacher of history and politics, and I wish those on both the extreme right and left would take a fresh look at the Constitution they love to reference. The ignorance oozing out of so many of their comments is frightening. But you can't stop with just the Constitution in its original form. The Constitution itself gives us the ability to alter it in accordance with out needs as time changes.... THAT is why we have survived as a nation for as long as we have... our Constitution is not RIGID. So for those of you who want to go back to original document and drop all of the constitutional law that has emerged since then, take a few hours to read it and figure out what will happen TO YOU if we throw it all out, because you can't pick and choose. If you want only to live by the original, the rest has to go. It's time for everyone to calm down and let's get back to a little reasonable discourse.

These are profoundly stupid racists and it should come as no surprise that there are quite a few of them. There must have been hundreds at their last D.C. march. No Dem should worry about them -- they were never going to vote for anyone but a Rebpublican or maybe a Libertarian anyway. They were decisively outvoted in 2008 and will be outvoted again this year. Mostly, this "movement" is a creation of a media that must put out something every day to go for ratings/readership. Were it not for Faux "News" fanning the flames of their hate-and-fear-filled venom, they probably would have disappeared already.

Let's get some of these things straight.
He IS a Socialist. The Banks. The Car Companies. The Health Care Industry. Student Loans. He's in bed with the UNIONS. He's trying to 'CONTROL THE MEANS OF PRODUCTION'.
He IS a MUSLIM. He was BORN a MUSLIM. His FATHER was a MUSLIM. His STEP FATHER was a MUSLIM. His MOTHER converted to ISLAM. He grew up in KENYA and INDONESIA. He attended MADRASSA. He PRAYED TO ALLAH, on his PRAYER RUG, 5 TIMES A DAY. Ask him.
WHY is his ORIGINAL BIRTH CERTIFICATE in a VAULT in HAWAII? Mine's at the Town Hall. Mine's not SEALED by the GOVERNOR of my State. Is yours, Mr. Capehart? Where are his COLLEGE TRANSCRIPTS? Where are his MEDICAL RECORDS? Seems like a lot of SECRECY, for MR. TRANSPARENCY.
He DOES do things that HITLER did. Ask the Black guy who got BEAT UP by Obamas' BROWNSHIRTS. Beat up, as he sat in his WHEELCHAIR, selling FLAG PINS. See Obama pick up the phone and dispatch his BROWNSHIRTS - ACORN and SEIU - to the HOMES of Bank Executives, to TERRORIZE THEIR FAMILIES. SEIG HEIL!
24% think he's the Anti-Christ. Well...You tell me. "And I saw the BEAST rise from the SEA. And he was given a 'MOUTH' to speak HAUGHTY and BLASPHEMOUS WORDS. ("We are the ones we've been waiting for.") And he was allowed to exercise authority for forty two months." Revelations 13-5. I guess if he's dead by JUNE of 2012, we'll have our answer. Won't we?
He's been in D.C. for 15 MONTHS and he STILL has no CHURCH. He REFUSED to speak at Georgetown University, unless all references to JESUS CHRIST, were either COVERED OVER, or REMOVED. And he is NO FRIEND OF ISRAEL. And we all know what GOD thinks of those who stand AGAINST HER.
Of course, he wouldn't have learned that at MADRASSA. Would he?

To me the teabaggers seem to be throwing off any form of a civilized veneer and wallowing in a kind of year long primal scream.
they began the minute Obama was sworn into office.
And, yes, I do see as a mostly racial. Many of those same teabaggers would not be going into a full on scream and overly hyper rhetoric and extreme thinking about the president if it was say, Hillary, or even Biden.
Some have even said they trust Biden and found him someone they could live with as president.
The whole birther nonsense, the absolute stubborn belief in Obama not being a citizen is a substitute for 'other'. Same with this 'socialist, communist, fascist' silliness (after all one is the polar opposite of the other two ists.).
In other words it is not exactly a democrat in office that is giving voice to the extreme behavior of the teabaggers.
Of course, some are of the PUMA set that refuses to accept anyone but, Hillary as president and will continue screaming until they day they die.
But, most are alarmed, whether they admit to it or even can see this or not, by the fact that our president's skin is darker then theirs.
That is why the subs in isms. It's easier to say 'socialist' then to say 'n' in society. But, it is still a substitute for the later.
I highly doubt the teabaggers would have spit on white democrat or called the n word if they were not looking for someone as a stand in for their fear over the black president.
This far deeper and far more hateful then Obama Derangement Syndrome. This is KKK without hoods and a teabag as a substitute for them.
This is aging, white rage at seeing their numbers dwindling and being overtaken by those 'dirty minorities'. Their America is disappearing and that is what is meant by wanting their country back. They want the country of white male presidents, white dominance and 1950s Leave it Beaver fantasies.
Funny how many are the same ones who marched for civil rights besides those 'dirty minorities' in the 60s and marched for social justice.
Now they have grown into enraged, resentful, old, white teabaggers. Where they use to embrace the idea of equality and justice, they now embrace greed and self obsession. Blame the victim and make them the scapegoats for all that is wrong in their own lives.

I've lived long enough now that I've pretty much seen it all. I rode in the back of the bus back when I wasn't allow to sit in the front. My heritage is nothing but American ... ancestors who are African, European and Native American. I'm reminded of Chris Rock, who in one of his routines has the refrain, " ... it's alright, cuz it's all white." That's the reason I can think of why we've lived thru fornicating presidents that would make Tiger look celibate (JFK,Clinton); lying, cheating presidents like Nixon; and utter numb-skulls like the last administration. But no one questioned their citizenship or heritage, nor were called socialist, elitest, communist, totalitarian or Joker. Why? What's so different now? Answer: no matter how bad a leader or role model they were, it was "alright, cuz it was all white." Call me what you want ... shout to the mountaintops that I'm wrong ... just don't pee on my leg and try to tell me it's raining ...

Now, gommy birther, the fact is that this president was born here. Hawaii is a state. Really. Look it up.
It blows my mind how some young 19 year old girl could fly half way around the world in 1961 to give birth in a foreign country, fly all the way back just in time to insert a birth announcement in league with the hospital in Hawaii. And conspire with the whole state to make it appear that Obama was born here just in case this black baby grows up to be president.
Yeah, right.
amazing.
As for socialist and Hitler. Excuse me but, by definition you are in conflict. Fascism is the opposite of socialism. Look it up.
Fascism is rightwing and socialism is left.
Fascism is totalitarian and authoritarian and so is rightwing.
You teabaggers automatically discredit yourselves by lumping the two together and give away that this is little more then over the top rhetoric fed to you by Fox news to throw around and you happily do so without knowing the meanings of those big words.
And for your information, my mother was a young girl in France during WWII. She knows first hand what true nazi and hitler rule is like and it is bears zero in common with the nonsense you teabaggers spew to scare each other to death with.
I suggest some actual reading of real history (the kind not read by the Texas Board of Ed.) but, real history before blowing your mouth off.
As for the antiChrist. Well, again, you teabaggers already prove your over the top rhetoric.
If Obama was the antichrist then you all would not be going on a year long tantrum over losing the white house to a black man.

Instead of telling the facts. the truth and exposing it.
It will only get worse and continue to divide the country more, the violence will evolve into something ugly and only then will the media maybe, stand up for truth.
Now is the time for the media to stop with the wishy washy hiding and stand up to the bullies in their midst. To call out Fox for what it really is and to stop trying to pretend it is a real news outlet.
It is not.

Let's smear the tea bag party with racism. How quaint. Such a typical democrat smear the fear campaign reaction. They must all fear a black president, right? Wrong. I guess what you are saying is that no one should suspect this president of any socialist leanings, when he still has his official Obama site up recruiting members, although not under the presidential seal, but under the "O" bama seal, with the what look's like farm rows coming out of it. I guess, that is where we will soon all be working for our food, because it will be the only jobs left. Especially if the farmers have to pay carbon taxes for all those diesel's they operate, and all the noxious fertilizers they put into the ground. How does one explain that the DSA, is most satisfied with Obama, and cite him as their political hero? Their politics and his seem to have very common similarities and they are not afraid to speak about how inline they both are. I am sure I will now here the dems squeal, "but we are socialist, both parties have played all these games." And of course that makes it a perfectly legitimate reason to have more dishonest and questionable maneuvers from the democrats. Do you think this does not anger the American people? It angers me and I am not a tea bag affiliate. I agree, that the constitution of the US better be adhered to, or we are no longer America. I like how we talk about vitrol, in the former article and comments, but no one controls the filthy "teabagger," comments, or the racist comments against the Christian religion. Never mind that Obama is supposed to be Christian along with Biden, not to mention that Muslims also hold office because of our right to freedom of religion. Did you all forget that right? I guess no one should complain that someone yells "gay," when all along from the very beginning people have been yelling "teabagger." Isn't that the same thing? I would much rather have a bagging from a teabagger, then an Obamabagger. Sorry folks I will leave that to Frank and Hardball. With all due respect I am sure my comments will be vilified and my free speech be revoked here, but then the very people calling old grannies and war veterans, who are in the tea bag group racist will get there way with all the smear. Especially, since Obama was already referring to them as his enemy early in his campaign/WH presidency.

Socialism is an economic system in which "the means of producing and distributing goods is owned collectively or by a centralized government that often plans and controls the economy." Obamacare and Obamabank, and Obamaautos. In modern societies, socialism often attempts to eradicate class divisions. While the word "socialism" is sometimes used interchangeably with "communism," the two aren't the same -- communism is a more extreme form of socialism. But, can be blended by each other when they tell you what you can or can't eat.

Communism advocates the "collective ownership of property and the organization of labor for the common advantage of all members." Somewhat like putting insurance companies, drug companies, certain capitalistic companies and Unions, under their wide umbrella of exemption, and complicit comingling. While communism is first and foremost an economic system, it's also a political ideology that rejects religion. Imagine rejecting religion, where have I heard that going on before? And just as communism is a form of socialism, Marxism, Maoism, and Leninism are branches of communism. Hmmm they seem to share some friendship together.

So, like socialism and communism, fascism uses a centralized authority to maintain control, but "terror and censorship" are common. Central authority? Terror censorship, exclusive one party meetings? Where are we seeing that? It results from economic failure in democratic political systems. Go figure, economic failure? My gosh, lets have some of that! Oops used one of those pesky exclamation points, I've now been identified. Here comes the IRS. Socialism and communism are both on the left end of the political spectrum. Fascism contains elements of both "left and right ideology" and rises from economic collapse. Hmmm, Economic collapse? Go figure? Hense, the famous fascist was Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. Who got along rather well with all those questionable characters in Europe. That ought to tell you it's not a good way to run a country. Budding dicatotors can't trust 'em. Our new flag will have Pillcrazy and her communist mallet on a red background.

I'm a registered Democrat. But I judge people by their actions. Obama's
healthcare bill is not something I can agree with.
There are better ways to reform healthcare.
And anybody who claims you can cover 32 Million more people, and -- reduce the deficit -- can't be taken seriously.

After the health care vote, a Virginia Tea Party organizer, Nigel Coleman, published the home address of U.S. Representative Tom Perriello and "invited" tea baggers to visit his home to protest his support of the bill.

But Mr. Coleman published the wrong address - the address was for the Congressman's brother.

Gas lines were cut at the brother's home.

The tea baggers and the Republicans are gearing up towards killing their political opponents.

It seems to me that quite a number of folks dislike President Obama's policy and agenda simply because he is the first non-white President. A wise man would pray for his success as his success and America's are presently related. The ill and ilk of racism is that the perpatraters is not aware that he or she is racist, it's deeply rooted in the DNA and the very core of the individual. Just as the slave master and the confederate power machine of the south in th 1750s swore up and down that slavery was sanctioned by GOD. Ignorance truly is blissed So who am I or you to change a bigiots mind. President Obama can and will never do anything good or honuorable in the eyes of sum. Ignorance and hate have always been associated. God bless true Cristians\Americans who see rightiously with Godly eyes not serving their own agenda but seeking truth for this great country of ours and its leaders. God bless America and bless our President.
Stomp out ignorance with your prayers and yes your LOVE. RIP Ghandi, MLK, you truly have shown us the path and the way

The primary funding sources for the Tea Party are two conservative groups: Americans for Prosperity and FreedomWorks which receive substantial funding from David Koch of Koch Industries, the largest privately-held energy company in the country, and the conservative Koch Family Foundations. Kock industries is responsible for hundreds of Oil spills spread over multiple states.

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants"

Is this not the truest of statements? When is the line drawn when the petitions and protests of Americans fall on the deaf ears of the leaders in which they elected to represent them?

This entire issue with the Obama Administration and health care stems from a much larger picture of the political atmosphere right now.

Blackwater
Bush's criminal actions
Healthcare Reform
Journalists being arrested for nothing
The Patriot Act
Corporate Spending on Campaigning
The Watch Lists which continue to grow daily (SSSS on your airplane ticket?)

It's about the growing concern on the increase of government powers and the centralizing of such into what represents a military and socialist like government.

We don't have a King in the U.S. but truly, it is only a word and hereditary measure which largely differentiates them. When a President, has the power to interpret the Constitution and the power it grants him in his own way, without Judicial inquire, or hearing, nor process by the branch of government responsible for advocating the interpretation of law and the Constitution, then that seat of power has went beyond the borders of it's design and will catapult a nation into revolt at the expense of men and women who follow afterward.

Czechoslovakia threw off it's Communist Yoke with a Velvet Revolution and now Al Sharpton claims America Voted for Socialism when they voted for Obama. So, isn’t it time for an American Velvet Revolution? http://www.commieblaster.com/velvet-revolution/index.html

Unsavory politics and word games of those currently embracing the power model of socialist democrats and the black liberation theology for the benefit of fundamentally transforming the US into a 'statist' nation will fail . . . only due to the current state of US fiscal affairs is bankrupt.

I have a question for all. Why wasn't Clinton called a socialist when trying to push health care through? Why does it matter what religion ones family is in a country founded on religious freedom? How many Americans are born yearly outside of our borders (think of military families)? How does Revelation even play a part in modern politics? Does GOD really promote hate? I guess racism is still alive in America... Maybe we should expect our politicians in both parties to step up. We are one of the only 1st world countries to provide health insurance to our politicians when our people can't see a doctor. It is not perfect here, but being nasty will not resolve our problems.

MISSING THE POINT:

I grew up with, lived, and had two companies, with a family member that had a server personality disorder. Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), which is a very serious illness. With over 50 years of experience and every day of my life dealing with it, it has become very clear to me the our President, Barack Obama, the commander and chief is inflicted with NPD.

If true. as I beleive, these many issues like above will only progressively increase while becoming more pronounced.

Knowing how NPD totally destroyed my family, I hope wrong. But each and every day, President Obama validate these very nasty symptoms.

Please review type into google:
